Q. How well do you feel about your first Olympic Games? RAFAEL NADAL: This is the second. Well, first and a half. Very happy for be here, no? Enjoying the experience. Always a pleasure be here with the rest of the biggest tournament of the world. I enjoying a lot in the village. So very, very happy for have one experience like this in my life.
Q. You mentioned the Olympic experience. How would you compare this tournament to other tournaments? Do you see it as the Olympic Gold being like a fifth Grand Slam or is it like Davis Cup playing Spain's colors? RAFAEL NADAL: Well, probably after Grand Slam is one of the most important thing of the year, no? So the date probably wasn't the best for us because we have to travel to United States, after come back here, another time to United States. So that's very tough for us, no? Especially for me, because I played a lot of matches in the last month. Gonna be tough. But at the same time, I am very happy for be here, no? Just try to enjoy hundred percent the experience, and later try my best on court. That's for sure.
Q. What is it like for you in the village? You probably get recognized a lot. Other athletes want photos. Are you able to get much privacy and rest time? RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, people recognize me a lot in the village. But they are sportsmen like me, no? So if they ask me for a photo, I just do the photo, no? So I told before, no? For me, is a pleasure be there. Is completely different experience than one tournament, and much better than one tournament, the experience, no?
Q. Could you talk about the match today. You had some trouble in the second set. Were you worried there may be an upset today? RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I start playing very well, no? I played very good first set. Happy for that because always is difficult to start the first match playing well. And I did, no? So I start very well. After, in the second set, I had the break against in the first game -- well, in the second. And later, I had a lot of opportunities, no, for come back, a lot of breakpoints. I didn't convert no one. So that was tough, no? I have a lot of chances, and for that reason, I did not win the set, no? But he did well. He was playing well, having good serves and moving very good the ball with his forehand. And later in the third set, the important thing, I wasn't probably serve very well today, but I was winning the serves without problems, no? So when I have the break in 4-2, I have one 15-40. But for the rest, I was winning my games without problems. He had more problems than me when he was serving. So that give me confidence. And finally I have the break and the match.
Q. How much did the air pollution here affect you in your workouts leading up to the Olympics? Has it been a factor for you at all? RAFAEL NADAL: No. The problem is the humid, no? I don't know. The true, I didn't feel nothing, the pollution. That didn't affect nothing on me, no? The problem is the humid are very, very hard. I had to change the shirt every 10 minutes. So it's difficult. All the time, I have to put some product to the hands, try to change the towel all the time. So is extra work. But, no, I think it's fine.
Q. You may have to play Lleyton Hewitt in the next round. Do you still consider him to be a dangerous opponent or do you think he's on the downhill sort of slide? Doesn't play a lot these days. RAFAEL NADAL: For sure he's one of the best players of the world, no? But he is not playing all the time. So for that reason, his ranking is not in the top positions. But for sure he's a very dangerous player, no? One of the worst second rounds in the draw.
Q. I understand Prince Felipe was here today. Have you had a chance to speak to him at all? RAFAEL NADAL: With the Prince? I saw Felipe yesterday on the basketball match of Spain.

Rafael Nadal s'est qualifié sans encombre pour les quarts de finale du tournoi olympique en disposant du Russe Igor Andreev battu en deux manches 6-4, 6-2. Le Majorquin aura pour prochain adversaire le vainqueur du duel entre Lu et Melzer.
Rafael Nadal et Novak Djokovic se sont qualifiés pour les quarts de finale du tournoi olympique.
Inquiété par Igor Andreev durant la première manche, l’Espagnol a ensuite déroulé pour prendre la mesure du Russe en deux manches (6/4 6/2). Son prochain adversaire se nomme Jürgen Melzer, tombeur du surprenant Lu. Novak Djokovic est également passé devant Mikhaïl Youzhny.
En huitièmes de finale du tournoi de double, les Espagnols Rafael Nadal et Tommy Robredo ont été éliminés en deux sets (6-2, 7-6) ce mercredi par la paire composée de Chris Guccione et Lleyton Hewitt. Le duo australien rencontrera les frères Bryan en quarts de finale.
Q. What kind of special feelings or impressions do you have for the Olympics? Do you feel anything different? RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I said, for me be here is amazing experience. So happy for be here, no? For sure is a different feeling from normal tournament, no? So enjoying.
Q. Were you a bit surprised it was only three games you lost in that match? RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, for sure. I played against a very tough opponent like Lleyton, so I know I had to play my best for win before the match. So I played very, very good match today, no? Very happy about my performance today. I think I play one of my best matches in the last weeks on hard court.
Q. The atmosphere, can you comment on that? It was very noisy, looked very lively out there. RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, was very good, no? The court is a very nice court. So, well, was almost full today. That was perfect, no?
Q. In my impression you are a very good baseliner on the clay court. But as in Wimbledon, and as in today's match, we see you approach the net quite a few times and you did it very successfully. Is it a new tactic that you have for you to get a medal? RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I always try improve my tennis, no? I think I did in the last years. So every year I was feeling a little bit better player. So I just try my best for continuing improve my tennis.
Q. When you're playing in the Olympics, do you feel you're playing more for yourself or for your country? RAFAEL NADAL: I feel like I play more for the country than usually, no? I think always we are representing our country in every tournament, because we play international tournaments. So we representing our country always. But here more than ever, no?
Q. How are you enjoying the general Olympic experience, the weather, and also life in the village? RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, I say, no, the other day. I enjoy a lot the village. Is totally, completely different experience than a normal tournament. So being there with the rest of the sport men [] of the world. So very happy for have the chance to live one experience like this. So, I don't know, just very happy, and thanks very much everybody there, because everybody was very nice with me all the time, no?
Q. I would like to know what would you say about Roger Federer saying that he's going to get gold medal? RAFAEL NADAL: What can I say, no?
Q. Are you going to get it? RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know, no. He is one of the biggest favorites, no, if not the most.
Q. You, too. RAFAEL NADAL: More him, no? He's more specialist than me in this surface. I gonna try my best for be there fighting in the last rounds, no, for have to try win a medal. You never know.
Q. What do you like more, win gold medal or beat Federer? RAFAEL NADAL: Always win a trophy than beat the No. 1.
Q. Tell us about the match today, please. RAFAEL NADAL: The match of today? Well, happy, no? I play a very good match. Very happy because I am playing close to my best level. So I beat against very tough player like Andreev, no? Very happy. He start playing very, very hard, very good I think. I was there, try my best all the time. I play very, very well.
Q. Do you feel like this is the best you've played on hard courts? RAFAEL NADAL: I am playing very well, no?
Q. Right now in your game, not necessarily today. RAFAEL NADAL: I am playing very well. I don't know if I am playing my best game on hard court. I have very good results in the past on hard court, too.
Q. What do you think about your next opponent, Jurgen Melzer? Do you know anything about him? RAFAEL NADAL: Well, sure, I know him, no? He's a good player, a very good player. I never play against him. Gonna be always a tough match, no? He's an aggressive player. He goes to the net. Good serve. He didn't give me a lot of rhythm. He didn't give me a lot of rhythm, so gonna be tough. My goal is try to continuing playing like this, like today and yesterday, no?
Q. What you go on court now, the way you've played this year, do you believe you can win every match? Do you expect to win? What are your feelings? RAFAEL NADAL: The same like always, no? My feeling is go on court and try to play my best tennis all the time, try my best. I know if I am playing well, I have chances for win a lot of matches. If I am playing bad, I have little bit less chances, no? I don't know. I go on court like always I did, just with having good confidence in me, no?
Q. You have doubles again later tonight. What are you going to do between now and then? How does it affect the way you manage a tournament, playing doubles as well? RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I gonna play a tough doubles against Guccione and Hewitt. They play well. I gonna eat something. I didn't eat much before the match, so I have hungry. Later I just prepare for the match.
Rafael Nadal n'a laissé que quatre jeux à l'Autrichien Jurgen Melzer, ce jeudi, pour se hisser dans le dernier carré de l'épreuve olympique. Vainqueur 6-0, 6-4, le Majorquin affrontera le Serbe Novak Djokovic au tour suivant.
Bon j'avoue, j'ai pas mal hésiter avant de poser ce post mais il fallait absolument que j'ai une confirmation (je ne sais même pas si c'est le bon endroit pour en parler, mais bon, ce sont les JO et ça concerne Rafa alors advienne que pourra!). Bref, je suis arrivée chez ma tante aujourd'hui, et tout le monde regardait les JO (petit racontage de vie oui ) Bon, le plus important arrive.. Ils me sautent tous dessus pour me dire que Fed a perdu, et puis, ils me disent aussi que Rafa est dopé, évidemment, je sors mes arguments les plus convainquants, sauf qu'ils me rétorquent que c'est sur france 2 qu'ils ont vu ça... Léger coup de flip, si vous voyez ce que je veux dire.. Non pas que je doute de Rafa, mais plutôt que je me demande pourquoi france 2 dit des choses comme celles là.. J'aimerai savoir si quelqu'un ici on a entendu parler ou l'a tout simplement vu à la télé..

Perso je n'ai rien entendu de tel! Mais si c'est vrai vaut mieux pour France Télévisions qu'ils aient une sacrée source pour appuyer leurs dires!
Pour beaucoup de monde, et en particulier certains journalistes français, le sport espagnol rime avec dopage et Rafa, ses muscles & ses victoires n’y échappent pas !
C’est dommage mais c’est comme ça, ici, on n’aime pas trop les gens qui gagnent, surtout quand ce ne sont pas des français. Et puis c’est connu les sportifs français sont les seuls qui ne se dopent pas !

je desteste nadal par moment mais je ne pense pas qu'il soit dopé il y a peu être des espagnols pas très nets mais rafa est un joueur qui respecte son sport et ce n'est pas du tout son etat d'esprit donc je pense que vous n'avez aucune crainte à vous faire Nadal est un grand champion et propre

J'ai rien entendu du tout moi non plus mais si c'est vrai, je trouve que France Télé abuse, ça ressemblerait presque à de l'acharnement. Pourquoi lui plus qu'un autre. Federer a été n°1 pendant plus de 4 ans et j'ai jamais rien entendu (attention je ne dis pas que je pense qu'il l'est) et parce que Rafa enchaine 30 victoires d'affilée et qu'il joue comme une "brute" (aux dires de certains) forcément sa force vient du dopage. Je m'arrête là, parce qu'on est sûr de rien sur ce qu'a dit la télé et je suis pas certaine qu'on soit au bon endroit.

Q. Talk about your quarterfinal match. RAFAEL NADAL: Yes, I am playing well, no? Very happy for be in the semifinals. Very happy because I played today very well, no? So that's very important victory for me. Continuing being in the semifinals in another tournament is very good news, no? Still playing maybe my best level.
Q. How surprised are you by Roger's defeat? RAFAEL NADAL: For sure is a surprise, no? No. 1 of the world lost. But the tennis always is very close, no? The level is very close. The match is decide in a few points a lot of times. Well, sometimes happens something like this. Sorry for him. But, you know, that's the tennis. Everybody lose, no? Disappointing for everybody. I am playing my best careera, my best season in my life. I play 15 tournaments, and I lost in eight. So more than 50% of the times I lost in a tournament. So the tennis is like this.
Q. You've been comfortable on clay and grass over two or three years. Are you now as comfortable on hard courts in terms of your footwork and general comfort? RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know, no? I am happy because I am playing very well. So that's very important for me. But I had very good results in the past on the hard court, too, no? So that's nothing new for me to play good in this surface. But I am playing good. And when I am playing good, I can play good in all surfaces, no?
Q. In the semifinals you will play Novak Djokovic. What do you expect in that match? RAFAEL NADAL: I expect a very, very tough match, no? I play against the No. 3 player of the world. This year he is the best player on this surface. He had the better results in this surface. So I have to play my best tennis, no? I lost against him one week and a half ago. I know how difficult is play against him. But if I play my best tennis, I beat him sometimes. So I hope play my best tennis and have chances for win.
Q. Your headband and your wristband. Are you familiar with the Color Orange campaign? It's a protest group. Just wondering, is there any particular choice for that color? RAFAEL NADAL: Is the colors of Spain. That's the reason. I don't know nothing. I respect everybody. I never was involved in politic things. I think the bandana and the wristbands is yellow. But when I am sweat, is turn orange. That's not my intention. Nothing of this.

Le futur numéro un mondial Rafael Nadal pourrait bien être couronné champion des Jeux olympiques de Pékin.
Nadal a atteint vendredi la finale du tournoi de simple en défaisant Novak Djokovic en demi-finale en trois manches de 6-4, 1-6 et 6-4. Le match s’est terminé sur un smash raté du Serbe, qui pourra toutefois se reprendre demain en disputant le match pour la médaille de bronze contre l’Américain James Blake.
En finale des Jeux olympiques de Pékin, Nadal affrontera le Chilien Fernando Gonzalez, vainqueur de James Blake en trois manches de 4-6, 7-5 et 11-9.
Quant à Roger Federer, qui a vu ses chances de gagner une médaille en simple être anéanties par James Blake en quart de finale, il disputera la finale du tournoi de double en compagnie de son compatriote Stanislas Wawrinka.
En demi-finale, les Suisses ont vaincu les frères Mike et Bob Bryan, numéros un mondial en double, en deux manches de 7-6 et 6-4. Plus tôt dans la journée, Federer et Wawinka avaient complété leur match de quart de finale contre les Indiens Mahesh Bhupathi et Leander Paes.
En finale, Federer et Wawrinka affronteront les Suédois Thomas Johansson et Simon Aspelin, vainqueurs des Français Arnaud Clément et Michaël Llodra au terme d’une demi-finale marathon (7-6, 4-6 et 19-17).
La finale masculine de double aura lieu demain à Pékin, alors que la finale masculine de simple sera disputée dimanche.
Le numéro un mondial sera donc bien au rendez-vous de l'Olympe. Pas Roger Federer, celui qui, clin d'oeil du destin, va passer la main précisément au lendemain de cette finale dont il ne sera pas. Mais Rafael Nadal, celui qui lui succèdera en tête de la hiérarchie mondiale. Pour tenter de conquérir l'or, l'Espagnol, qui s'est défait du Serbe Novak Djokovic (6-4, 1-6, 6-4) en demi-finales, vendredi, affrontera le Chilien Fernando Gonzalez, tombeur de l'Américain James Blake au terme d'un match explosif (4-6, 7-5, 11-9).
Nadal au mental
«Rafa» - «Nole», ce combat là s'annonce déjà comme un classique des années à venir (photo Reuters). Avec gros spectacle à la clé. Cette fois n'a pas été l'exception qui confirme la règle. Un match serré, avec juste une éclipse au deuxième set. Si un seul chiffre devait parler, ce serait celui du nombre de balles de break converties par l'un et l'autre : 3. Sauf que Nadal, lui, en a obtenu 7 en tout, comme le reflet de la légère supériorité du guerrier majorquin qui a fait la différence. Au mental. Et si un seul point devait refléter l'intensité de la rencontre, justement, ce serait la balle de match. Alors que Rafael Nadal était mené dans l'échange, que Novak Djokovic dictait clairement sa loi et que le champion de Roland-Garros et Wimbledon réussissait plusieurs défenses désespérées, le Serbe a conclu d'un smash immanquable... expédié complètement hors-limites.
Manque de sportivité
L'autre demi-finale a été tout aussi intense. Mais dans un autre genre. En tout cas à la fin, puisque le battu du jour, James Blake, a reproché à Fernando Gonzalez son manque de sportivité. «Il m'a déçu, a commenté après coup l'Américain. Sur un point à 9-8 dans le troisième set, la balle touche sa raquette avant de sortir et Gonzalez ne dit rien. Il me regarde droit dans les yeux mais ne dit rien. Je pensais que le tournoi olympique était un rendez-vous de gentlemen. Jamais je n'aurais pu faire ce qu'il a fait.» Mais le spectacle a été au rendez-vous, le Chilien venant arracher la victoire à sa cinquième balle de match et près de trois heures de jeu. De quoi lui faire visiblement «oublier» l'incident... «Personne ne m'a rien demandé, a tenté d'expliquer Fernando Gonzalez. Je ne suis pas sûr mais je ne pense pas avoir touché la balle. Ca faisait deux heures et demie que j'étais sur le court, j'étais fatigué... et puis il y a un arbitre.»
Mais dimanche, l'enjeu sera ailleurs que dans une guéguerre de bonnes manières. D'un côté du filet, il y aura un Chilien transcendé par les Jeux Olympiques. A Athènes, il avait en effet remporté le bronze en simple et l'or en double, associé à son compatriote Nicolas Massu, champion olympique en simple. De l'autre, un Espagnol avec le talent, la combativité et le mental que l'on sait, qui clame son attachement aux compétitions qui mettent en exergue le maillot plutôt que l'ego. Et qui n'avait goûté qu'au double à Athènes. Pour l'un comme pour l'autre, cette finale aura un goût de complétude.
