John Isner vient de mettre fin au parcours d'Andy Roddick à Winston-Salem. Le géant américain a en effet disposé de son compatriote sur le score de 7/6, 6/4 après 1h36 de jeu en demi-finales du tournoi.
En finale Isner retrouvera le vainqueur du match qui opposera, un peu plus tard, Julien Benneteau à Robin Haase.

Winston-Salem: Isner domine Benneteau en finale !

C'est John Isner qui a remporté, ce samedi, la première édition du Winston-Salem Open (Dur extérieur, Caroline du Nord, Etats-Unis). En finale, il a dominé le français Julien Benneteau, issu des qualifications, au terme de 2h03 d'un match accroché et conclu sur le score de 4/6, 6/3, 6/4.

De la confiance avant l'US Open
Malgré cette défaite, Benneteau signe là, de loin, sa meilleure performance de la saison et il se présentera avec le plein de confiance au départ de l'US Open où il affrontera Nicolas Almagro au premier tour. Isner s'offre quant à lui le troisième titre de sa carrière, le deuxième déjà cette saison après celui de Newport en juillet. Il sera opposé à Marcos Baghdatis au premier tour du côté de Flushing Meadows.

Andy Roddick and John Isner confirm participation at the Atlanta Tennis Championships

Americans Andy Roddick and John Isner have affirmed that they will feature in the Atlanta Tennis Championships.

Though Atlanta's ATP tennis tournament was called the Atlanta Tennis Championships, it was actually held the last two years in cities of John's Creek and Norcross. This year it will be different. Tournament director Bob Bryant made the news official that the 2012 Atlanta Tennis Championships will be moved to Atlantic Station, Atlanta. Next year's the tournament will be held between July 14-22.

When asked Andy Roddick about how he feels coming back and playing the tournament, Andy said, “I have some great memories of playing in Atlanta where I won my very first ATP Word Tour event. To return and have an opportunity to play in this remarkable new venue will be very exciting. July summer nights in the middle of Atlanta with the skyline lights towering above along with the supportive tennis fans that always turn out here will make for one of the best stops on tour. I’m looking forward to playing in the Atlanta Tennis Championships.”

Last year's runners-up, John Isner had already signed a multi year deal to feature in the tournament is the No.3 American and is ranked No.18 in the world. The big tall American stands a tall 6'9 in height and is known for his big thunderous serves. Isner said, “ I’m excited about returning to the Atlanta Tennis Championships and playing in front of the enthusiastic tennis fans in Georgia. I’m also looking forward to playing at Atlantic Station, in the heart of the city, this year and the next several years. The energy and excitement of this unique setting will be fun for all the players.”

Also featuring here is the US Open 2011 mixed doubles champion Jack Sock. Sock commented, “It’s a real pleasure to attend the site announcement of Atlantic Station as the new home of the Atlanta Tennis Championships. This is a spectacular venue with a great ambiance and I can’t wait to compete here in July. I am truly honored for the tournament to include me in their plans and look forward to putting out the best performance I can.”

Even Tournament Director Bob Bryant seems very excited and is sure that the tournament will be a success. “With the addition of Andy, John and Jack, we are far ahead of past years in bringing in top talent at such an early date. L'Américain l'a emporté 10-8 dans le cinquième set, grâce à un total de 43 aces et après avoir été mené deux manches à une. L'immense Isner a également dû passer par un tie-break dans le quatrième set pour sauver sa peau avant d'aller chercher la victoire (4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 [5], 10-. Isner d'acier

Une nouvelle fois, John Isner a livré un combat titanesque en Grand Chelem. Une nouvelle fois, l'Américain en est sorti vainqueur, en battant David Nalbandian 10-8 au cinquième set après 4h41 de match. Pour s'en sortir, il a pu compter sur son service, bien sûr, mais aussi un mental à toute épreuve.

Décidément, John Isner est le roi du suspense. Certes, son deuxième tour de l'Open d'Australie face à David Nalbandian ne marquera pas l'histoire du tennis comme son invraisemblable match face à Nicolas Mahut voilà 18 mois à Wimbledon. Mais l'Américain s'est encore retrouvé au centre d'un combat épique. Une fois encore, il en est sorti victorieux (4-6,6-3,2-6,7-6,10-8 ) après quasiment cinq heures d'une bataille au cours de laquelle il a montré qu'il avait non seulement un gros service, mais aussi de sacrés nerfs.

Cela fait une belle jambe à Nalbandian, mais ce match, le plus beau depuis le début du tournoi, ne méritait pas de perdant. L'Argentin a eu énormément d'opportunités. Il a mené une manche à rien, puis deux sets à un. Il a réussi deux fois plus de coups gagnants que de fautes directes (67 contre 33), mais ça n'a pas suffi. En face, Isner a su servir le plomb quand c'était nécessaire, avec un total de 43 aces, que ce soit dans le jeu décisif du quatrième set, où il est passé à deux points de l'élimination, ou en toute fin de rencontre. Le géant américain a surtout eu le mérite de s'accrocher dans le cinquième set. Victimes de crampes, il était encore moins mobile que d'habitude dans la dernière demi-heure de la partie. C'est au courage qu'il est allé chercher cette qualification.

Parmi les nombreux tournants du match, il y a sans aucun doute cette balle de break effacée par Isner à 8-8 dans le dernier set. D'abord annoncé faute par le juge de ligne, le service d'Isner a finalement été donné sur la ligne par l'arbitre. Nalbandian a trainé à demander le challenge et Kader Nouni a annoncé "égalité". Dès lors, Nalbandian ne pouvait plus demander l'arbitrage vidéo. Après quelques palabres et la venue du juge-arbitre, l'Argentin a dû se résoudre à reprendre le jeu. Dans la foulée, Isner a gagné sa mise en jeux avant de réussir le break décisif, laissant Nalbandian à sa frustration.

Ice man Bernard Tomic passes another test



BERNARD Tomic's arrival as a true force gained momentum when he beat American Sam Querrey last night in another impressive come-from-behind victory at Melbourne Park.

Against a rival blessed with phenomenal power on serve and an aggressive nature on court, Tomic was defensive early but gradually worked back into the second-round match to win, 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.

"(That was a) tough, tough match," Tomic said.

"He has been in the top 20 for a long time. For me to come back after that first round and recover, I felt I did a good job."

But as outstanding as the 19-year-old has been in beating two opponents of genuine class - Fernando Verdasco has been a semi-finalist here while Querrey won four titles in a season in 2010 - there is no reprieve for Tomic.

His third-round opponent is Alexandr Dolgopolov, another tyro blessed with a fabulous repertoire of shots. There is a reason Tomic, despite his form, was less than happy with the news that the Ukrainian had progressed just minutes before his own win.

In their three outings, Dolgopolov, 23, is unbeaten. Alarmingly, he has overcome a set deficit in their two outings last year, in Sydney and Shanghai, to crunch the Gold Coast teenager in the latter two sets on both occasions.

"Absolutely not (am I happy with his win). Me and Alex always have tough matches and he is a very good player," Tomic said.

Given the gruelling nature of his win over Verdasco on Tuesday, Tomic should have an advantage against Dolgopolov given the time the 13th seed has spent on court.

A quarter-finalist last year, losing to Andy Murray in a tough four-setter, the Ukrainian has needed five sets to win his opening two matches. He took almost 3 1/2 hours to post a 4-6 6-1 6-1 3-6 8-6 win over German Tobias Kamke late yesterday on Hisense Arena.

That Tomic has played only a set less is testament to his remarkable poise in tight conditions. It is unlikely he will play a more important tiebreaker at this Australian Open than the one that gave him a two sets to one advantage against Querrey. If he had lost that, it would have meant another five-set encounter for him to progress.

Querrey skipped to an early lead due largely to Tomic's failure initially to deal with the American's powerful and precise serving. Tomic worked his way into the match with his usual mixed bag of shots and speed.

The third set was a classic encounter between a pugilist trying to bludgeon his rival with a powerful serve and forehand and a counter-puncher.

Come the tiebreaker, though, and it was hard to see Tomic faltering, given his nerve. He must surely have ice coursing through his veins.

On the way to winning the Kooyong Classic last week, Tomic declared that, as a junior, he had won about 85 per cent of the tiebreakers he played. He was not boasting, merely stating a fact. So it proved again.

Tomic claimed the tiebreaker with the following shots; a drop volley winner to level at 1-all; a dipping cross-court forehand to Querrey's feet that set up an easy backhand pass for 3-1; a forehand that cleaned the line for 4-1; a wide serve that proved unreturnable for 5-2; and an astonishing retrieving lob that landed on the line and forced the American into error.

Only twice did Querrey err in the stanza, yet that was enough for the match, effectively, to go begging. On last night's nerveless display in the critical tiebreaker, woe behold anyone who faces the Australian in tense moments.

Tomic's victory means Australia has four men in contention going into the fourth day of the Australian Open. Lleyton Hewitt faces Andy Roddick tonight, while James Duckworth and Matt Ebden are in action on Margaret Court Arena today.

That is in stark contrast to last year when Tomic was the sole shining light in reaching the third round, losing to Spaniard Rafael Nadal. As unhappy as Tomic is that Dolgopolov is his opponent tomorrow, he is surely preferable to the date he had with Nadal a year ago.

L'Américain a beaucoup souffert de la chaleur et s'en est finalement bien sorti bien (7-5, 7-5). Tête de série n°11 du tournoi californien, Isner s'est retrouvé en difficulté en fin de match, malgré 10 aces et une belle efficacité lors de ses montées au filet (15 points sur 18 tentatives). Il affrontera le vainqueur de la rencontre qui oppose l'Australien Matthew Ebden à son un autre Américain, Mardy Fish, tête de série n°8.

Le géant américain s'est imposé après 2 heures et 45 minutes de jeu en trois sets (7-6 [9/7], 3-6, 7-6 [7/5]). Comme souvent, il a pu s'appuyer sur un service de plomb (20 aces, dont 5 dans les deux tie-breaks et 74% de premiers services) mais aussi sur son jeu au filet pour dominer son adversaire. Un succès, le premier face au Serbe après deux tentatives infructueuses en 2010, qui permet à Isner d'intégrer pour la première fois de sa carrière le top 10 mondial. «Je savais avant le match que j'allais commettre pas mal d'erreurs en tentant ma chance, mais je savais aussi que j'allais réussir pas mal de coups gagnants. Le premier set a été la clé car il (Djokovic, ndlr) a pris l'avantage mais j'ai réussi à débreaker en fin de set et ça m'a mis dans une bonne dynamique a confié le joueur de 26 ans. Ma victoire contre Roger (en Coupe Davis en février) a été très importante pour ma confiance et celle-là le sera aussi évidemment. C'est un moment spécial pour moi, c'est pour ça que je joue au tennis. Il n'y a pas beaucoup de gens qui peuvent dire qu'ils ont battu le N.1 mondial. J'ai l'impression que je mérite de faire partie du Top 10 mondial et je vais essayer d'y rester pour encore un moment». Il affrontera Rafael Nadal ou Roger Federer en finale dimanche.

Novak Djokovic, toujours numéro un mondial et beau joueur, a reconnu que son adversaire méritait la victoire et qu'il était difficile de lutter face à un service aussi performant : «C'est frustrant de jouer contre quelqu'un qui passe 70% de ses premiers services avec cet angle, cette vitesse et cette précision, a réagi Djokovic. Je trouve que j'ai fait un bon match, même si je n'ai pas concrétisé mes occasions, mais John a très bien joué quand il en a eu besoin. Je le félicite. Il est allé chercher sa victoire et il mérite sa place dans le Top 10. "C'est pour ça que je joue au tennis, pour vivre des moments pareils", jubilait l'Américain après coup. "Il n'y a pas beaucoup de gens qui peuvent se vanter d'avoir battu le numéro un mondial !" Seul Andy Murray peut se targuer d'en avoir fait autant en 2012, à Dubaï...
