Alez j'inaugure :

Sam Steps Back In Time

Sam QUERREY Querrey1

The odometer has been stuck on 61,000 miles since I got the van. Because the gearbox is old, it goes from first to third almost without using the clutch. The gas gauge is broken too

Most fans wish gas prices were back at 1970s levels. Sam Querrey also longs for that era on the road, having missed it first time around.

Sam Querrey has a nearly antique VW van. Being able to afford almost anything as a result of being a rising young tennis star, it is a testament to tradition and utility. The van is a 1974 model that has ferried his friends around and has served as a "teaching implement" for those who needed manual transmission experience. It's more than just a mode of transportation; it's a statement.

Having heard about Sam Querrey's storied 1974 VW van that has, from time to time, transported his green chest painted “Samurai”, a group of his former high school pals who show up regularly when he competes locally, I decided to check it out for myself. On the day after Thanksgiving, I drove to Thousand Oaks, California to talk with Sam. As it turned out, it was anything, but a leftover turkey visit.

“It's the first time I've started it in about four months,” said the lanky 6'6” 20-year-old, (who had celebrated his birthday 16 days before), through the open driver's side window as the engine roared to life. “It always starts right up.”

Living in an area not far from the “Ventura Highway,” which the band America crooned about, and equally close to the beaches of “Surfin' Safari” Beach Boys fame, where vans in the '60s owned the California costal roads, makes sense for the Querrey family. They have a strong VW tradition.

“When I was very young, my father traveled to Europe with my mom in 1969 to get a Bug,” said Chris Querrey, Sam's mother. “Mike and I each had a Bug before we were married. Then the first car we bought was a VW Rabbit convertible in 1984. When I was pregnant with Sam, everyone said, 'You can't have a Bug with a child,' so we bought a VW Vanagon that we later vacationed in.
"We made many camping trips, with Sam and his sister Ellen, to various places in Northern California, and we took it to the drive-in movies many Friday nights when Sam was a baby. We owned that van for about 10 years until we moved to Las Vegas. It was just too difficult to cool, because there was so much internal air space. The AC just wasn't able to do its job.”
When Sam became old enough to drive, Ed Querrey, Mike's father, found a 1974 van for sale that was in bad shape, in Monrovia, California. Sam paid about $1,500 for it. His grandfather then located a man who restored VW's. He did them in five colors, and Querrey picked electric blue with a white roof.

Video: Hear Sam talk about the day at least 15 friends crammed into the back of his van.

True to the classic design of VW vans from that era, there is a tire mounted in the front, and as Chris admitted, “Sam's kind of old fashion. He isn't interested in speed. Thirty miles per hour max is just fine for him.”

Sam added, “The odometer has been stuck on 61,000 miles since I got the van. It never changes. Because the gearbox is old, it goes from first to third almost without using the clutch. The gas gauge is broken too, so I never really know how much gas I have. If I drive it to Indian Wells (the Pacific Life Open), I have to really pay attention to how far I've gone so that I stop for gas before it runs out.”

Today, most youngsters learn to drive using an automatic transmission. Like Sam, Ellen Querrey was an exception. “She learned to drive in the van, which was difficult because the gears are not in the best shape,” he said. “I've used it to teach my friends to drive a stick. It's a lot of fun.”

As primo as the outside is, the interior is rudimentary except for a fabulous speaker system. “I probably shouldn't say this, but when I was 15, I got one of those scratcher game cards at the market and won $400,” Querrey said with a beguiling smile. “My mother collected the money and I bought Bose speakers.”

In a New York Times Magazine ad for U.S. Trust Bank of America Private Wealth Management this past October, there are three men and a woman sitting on a beach in front of a VW van and the copy reads, “The most valuable car in his collection isn't the Ferrari, the Cobra or the Aston Martin, but a 1968 bus.”

In Sam Querrey's case, satisfaction is the 1974 VW van that's in the garage of his family's home in Thousand Oaks.

An interview with Sam Querrey

Western & Southern Financial Group
July 28, 2008
S. Querrey / P. H. Mathieu
6/4 4/6 6/3

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Got to be happy with that result?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, he's a great player. I was listening to his accomplishments when we were warming up. Four titles, and I think he's been ranked I don't know what the highest is, but I think it's in the low teens. Happy to get by that.

Q. Progress report for the summer, how are you feeling?
SAM QUERREY: Feeling good. Hopefully I can do well here, and then I've got the Olympics and the US Open. Hopefully at the US Open I can make better run than I did last year. Went out first round, so it would be nice to win at least one match there, but hopefully two, three, or four.

Q. You've won a title yourself this year. Has that changed your outlook on things, or your perspective?
SAM QUERREY: A little bit. They kind of give you the belief that you can win the titles and the tournaments. You know, and confidence is a big part of playing out here.

Q. You mentioned that you were listening to his accomplishments warming up. Do you think of yourself on those kind of terms now, too?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, I mean, it's a pretty cool thing to say you've won an ATP tournament. You know, not many people have done that, so it's nice.
Hopefully I can have more to come in the future.

Q. Do you sense yourself building toward anything? Have you gotten stronger?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, I've definitely gotten stronger, and I think my net play, although I don't come to the net that often, is getting much better.
But I know in Indianapolis I was coming to the net a little more and winning the majority of the points at the net. I'm still trying to work on that. I also really want to work on my return, kind of push it in there a little bit. I'm going to go out here a little later and hit 50 returns as hard as I can pretty much. I gotta start stepping up and doing that a little more.

Q. This was your first career meeting against Mathieu. How do you go about preparing?
SAM QUERREY: You pretty much know how every guy plays because it's the same group at every tournament. I know he's got a great backhand. If you're gonna put some pressure on him you got to do it to the forehand side. But I'll just kind of sit down with my coach. You don't want to do anything that goes too far outside of my strengths, so I kind of want to ﷓﷓ most of the time I'll just play my strengths and my serve and try to work on the ball with my forehand. If he's beating me like that, then you have to kind of reevaluate and say, Okay, maybe hit every ball to his backhand or maybe serve and volley or something. You kind of, for the most part, know how every guy plays. I kind of knew ﷓﷓ I don't want to go backhand to backhand with him all day because I'm probably gonna lose that, so I was trying to go forehand to forehand if I could.

Q. You made a lot of progress in the last year. You had a wild card here last year. You lost a tough three﷓setter to James Blake. Your title win this year. You got on the quarters in Monte﷓Carlo. Just kind of comment in terms of last year to this year. Do you have a difference in mindset?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, last year was still kind of the new guy a little bit and you're kind of still getting wild cards into some events. You know, it was just really exciting to get that. I didn't think of myself as like an threat really to win ATP tournaments. But this year I've gone far in a couple Masters Series events and won Vegas, so now I just have confidence. I feel like more and more that I kind of belong with the top group of players.

Q. You made a point early on in your career of not putting pressure on yourself. Is that still your attitude about that, being able to roll with the losses and not feeling like you got to go out there and set benchmarks or anything? Has your thinking about that changed at all?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, no, it's still pretty much the same. Earlier in the year I was kind of the stretch with especially in Memphis. I was kind of I don't know if not enjoying it, but I was playing not to lose rather than to kind of go out there to play to win. Literally the next week in Vegas I just went out there and said, I'm gonna take chances. I'm gonna run around second serves and hit them hard as I can. I'm going to just try to have fun. That's the only purpose of playing every match. I won the tournament, so I'm trying to be more like that. Yeah, I mean, I don't really feel pressure. I'm just kind of going out there and doing whatever.

Q. Describe what it was like to work with Gil (Reyes).

SAM QUERREY: It was great. I'm still somewhat working with him when I'm home. I was excited when adidas hired him, and I've been over there I think three times. It's great. He's got a great gym. I think it's really beneficial.

Q. What sort of results have you noticed in that regard?
SAM QUERREY: I definitely got a lot stronger in my upper body. I don't know if you guys can tell. I'll wear a tight shirt in my next match. It might not look like it, but it's there.
I mean, just all around. You know, we'll work on strength from the feet all the way up to the shoulders and back. I feel like ever thing is a little bit stronger.

Q. Even though it was early the crowd was clearly behind you because you're American. Just wondering how much can you hear that even in the early rounds, and how much does that affect your play?
SAM QUERREY: It makes a big difference. It's much easier when the crowd is behind you. I know outside of the United States I've never won two consecutive matches. It's nice when the crowd is behind you and you know you've got the majority of the stadium kind of rooting for you. It makes a big difference for me.

Q. Did you say there you had won more than two match consecutive matches outside of the US?
SAM QUERREY: No, Australia is the only place. I forgot about that.
THE MODERATOR: And Monte Carlo.
SAM QUERREY: And Monte Carlo, too. Ignore what I said.

Q. Do you have any specific rankings goals for the end of the year?
SAM QUERREY: I mean, I wanted to at least being ranked in the 30s. That would be a realistic, you know, good goal. If I was anything higher than that it would just be a bonus. It would be nice to be seeded at the Australian Open next year.

Q. What do the Olympics mean to you?
SAM QUERREY: I'm excited to go. It's an honor to make the team and play for your country. It's gonna be or I hope it's going to be a great event. Should be really fun.

Q. Except for the travel there.
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, but not too bad, I guess. I come from California.

Q. Talk a little bit about working with Gill and what his approach is and the way he looks at things? I mean, he has such Yoda-like manner and aura about him.
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, he's very private. You can't get anything out of him really. But we always work out in the gym at his house. It's just always about getting stronger and making yourself more powerful and being an athlete. Those are his kind of main three things. Whenever you're doing, you know if you're doing one rep of something, it's a serious rep with a purpose behind it. He's very you know, we'll take some you're always eating toast or bananas while you're working out. It's just very specific, and there's a purpose behind every exercise.

Q. Were you working on the machines he designed.
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, he actually welds those machines at his house.

Q. Were you at the Agassi Training Center? When you say his house, you're talking about the freestanding training center, right?
SAM QUERREY: In his backyard, yeah.

Q. Did you see Andre's trophies and Olympic medals?

SAM QUERREY: Yeah, he's got them all up there. All the Grand Slams and then I think the Olympics. The trophies are so many smaller than I thought. French Open trophy is like that big. It's kind of disappointing.

Q. So you're saying they're a lot smaller now?

SAM QUERREY: I don't know what they're like now. I don't know if you actually keep the trophy that you get.

Q. You get a replica.
SAM QUERREY: But it's like a replica scaled down to one tenth of the size. Itty bitty. The US Open one is like a nice big one. If you're going to win one, you know...

Q. Is he the only guy you're working with on strength training and stuff?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, I mean, sometimes when I'm home in southern California I'll work with Mary Joe who works for the USTA down at the Carson Center, and sometimes just do my own thing.

An interview with Sam Querrey
Tuesday, August 26, 2008

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. So many matches, so many men's matches, seem to be fighting for just one serve and a break. In this match you started off with two quick breaks. Did that throw you off in any way? Is that a different sort of mentality starting the match?
SAM QUERREY: A little bit. Today was like one of the first times ‑‑ it might have been the first time ever I chose to receive when I won the toss. I think it was the first time ever, and I broke that first game.
I think I'm going to start doing that from now on. I don't know. I think sometimes it's easier to kind of ‑‑ that first game can you kind of swing freely, and if you lose it, you lose it, you're on serve again.
But it's kind of strange to start off, because I broke him the first game and the third game, and then he broke me the fourth game, I think.
So three out of four breaks those first four games is odd, especially with us. We both have pretty big serves. But I don't know. You just have to just stay with it. That can happen.

Q. What did you sense on the other side of the net? Was there any sign of an injury or anything like that?
SAM QUERREY: I don't think so. I thought I just...

Q. Just played well?
SAM QUERREY: Just played really well, really smart and really well. I think, you know, tennis is a lot about momentum. I just kept it going.

Q. Can you put this win in perspective, how big it is in your own mind in terms of your own development?

SAM QUERREY: It's a big one. Last three or four tournaments I've gone out pretty early with tough players, so it's nice, especially at the Grand Slam in your own country, to get off to a good start.
Hopefully I can keep playing like that in my next round and hopefully win again and keep going.

Q. Are you still working with Gil?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, somewhat. I haven't been in a while just because I've been home for a week in the last three months, but... Yeah, when I have time I'm trying to go over.

Q. So you go to him?
SAM QUERREY: Yes.

Q. As opposed to him coming to you?

SAM QUERREY: Yeah, I haven't since April and May, but that's just because I've been on the road pretty much every week.

Q. Is that work of benefit during the season, or do you see that mostly as an off‑season deal or when you have longer breaks?

SAM QUERREY: You know what? I'm not sure yet, because we just kind of started in April. So we kind of have to see what exactly it's going to turn into.

Q. What's so special about Gil Reyes?
SAM QUERREY: He's been around a champion like Andre Agassi for 20 years and he knows what it takes. He knows what you have to do to get to the level of being the best player ever.
I think, you know, when you're around someone who's worked with or has any involvement with, you know, one of the greatest players ever, you know, that's going to kind of rub off.

Q. You take a pretty relaxed attitude to your career. You weren't pushing it, you weren't rushing it, setting goals or anything. What's it been like for you in the past year? Are there times when you sort of look at the rankings and say, I should be doing better, or I'm doing better than I thought?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah. Early on I was doing better than I thought. I didn't think I was going to go up in the rankings that quickly, but there's definitely been parts to the year where ‑‑ I think I'm like 54, maybe.
Earlier in the summer I was ranked 37, so you want to be ranked up there in the 30s, because it makes a difference for the end of the year.
You get into Paris and Madrid, the two Masters Series, and it would be nice ‑‑ for me, ideally I'd like to start the year next year in '09 seeded for the Australian Open. That's kind of my goal for the end of the year.

Q. Do you have a favorite story you could share with us about something special, something from the Olympics? It must have been quite an experience to go there.
SAM QUERREY: Yeah. I mean, it was really cool, especially going, staying in the Village. They almost built like an oasis in the middle of Beijing. For us to get to our dorm or whatever you want to call it, kind of had to walk through the ‑‑ this pathway. Then you zigzagged on this path through like a waterway, and then you went under this overhang with misters and had to step across these steppingstones over a creek to get to our dorm or apartment.
So it was kind of an adventure just to get to the apartment. It was cool. I stayed there with James and Robby and Lindsay Davenport. The four of us were there and it was fun. There every afternoon you go down to the common room, and have all the U.S. athletes would be down there hanging out watching the other sports and talking to each other. Everyone would go over and eat lunch or dinner together.

Q. Did anyone think you were a basketball player because of your height?
SAM QUERREY: I'm sure some did.

Q. And your favorites athlete that you met there?

SAM QUERREY: I didn't meet him, but he was probably the funniest thing I saw. There was this guy, I think he's from Great Britain, playing badminton. Stocky guy. We were watching him on TV and he won, and I was with James and Robby. We were eating lunch and he walked into with a sleeveless shirt like he was the man of the Olympics. Like 20 minutes later like this power walk badminton guy. So kind of funny.
The other thing I thought was weird too is the gymnasts are so much smaller than you actually think. On TV they're small, but when they walk in packs, looks like a group of second graders. They look about 14 and they're about 4'8".

Q. Have you played a guy who plays somewhat similar to you? A lot of power? Big serve and stuff? Do you like playing a guy like that?

SAM QUERREY: I don't really have a preference. I guess ‑‑ I don't really mind a huge serve. Since I'm a tall guy, if it gets up, sometimes it's more in my zone than with the little guys. So I don't mind playing against a big server really.

Q. Did somebody ask you to compare it to Koubek last year?

SAM QUERREY: No. That was tough. Koubek played well last year. Played well against me, and had a really good match against James at night. That was tricky.
It's tough. He's a little guy, lefty serve, it stays wide, he can slides you wide. I prefer returning off a right‑hander any day.

Q. Seems like you met a guy Berdych, who's improved his whole career until this year. He's sliding back. Meantime, you seem to be pushing up. You're higher in the points race, ranking. You're kind of crossing paths very similar to you in a way.
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, hopefully I can go on the next couple of years and have a career like he's had so far, because I think he's been top 10 so far and won a Masters Series and gone deep in multiple Slams. So hopefully I can have some results like him.

Q. Seems like all this talk about American tennis there's an urgency, you know. I hear about people in the game wanting to see an American ascend to a certain level. How much is a player of your age and where you are in your career, how much do you feel that urgency?
SAM QUERREY: I can feel it a little bit. It's kind of tough, because for the last ‑‑ not the last three years but before that, since ‑‑ I mean, 1970 to 2005, America pretty much had a No. 1 ranked player. Someone who was always running to win a Slam.
We haven't had that the last couple years. Andy and James and Mardy and I, John Isner, we're all working hard, and hopefully we can get to the point where it could be like it was 10 years ago and we could have three guys in the top 10.
I don't really feel any pressure by it or anything.

Q. Do you feel like you've learned a lot this year so far?
SAM QUERREY: Definitely. I'm learning more and more as my career goes on.

Q. Did you see any of Donald's match with James last night?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah. I watched three‑and‑a‑half sets. Donald was playing well.

Q. Did you expect it to take this long for him to sort of come of age and play a match like that against a top player?
SAM QUERREY: I didn't ‑‑ didn't really think about it, but hopefully he can play, keep playing like that and put some more wins on the table and, you know, get his ranking into the top 10.

Q. Is it safe to assume you've seen your draw for the next few rounds?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, I know now I play the winner of Devilder, from France and another guy. I know they're playing right now.

Q. That being the case, is it hard not to sort of play this what‑if game and look at points and prize money and just sort of spin us out a few rounds?

SAM QUERREY: You kind of look ‑‑ it's hard not to look at two, three, up to the third round, really into it. But, you know, you always kind of look at it and kind of know who you're going to play if you win.
But points and prize money, I don't really look at until later on in the tournament.

Q. Is this one of the best matches you've ever played today?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah. I'd say this is one of the three best matches of my life.

Q. What are the other two?
SAM QUERREY: The other two? Probably against James Blake last summer, and another one might have been against Moya this year in Monte‑Carlo.

Q. Gasquet?

SAM QUERREY: Gasquet, too. Cãnas in Vegas.

Q. What's been the greatest moment of your career and the most painful moment so far?
SAM QUERREY: Greatest moment is probably winning the Vegas tournament. The most painful, I lost a challenger last ‑‑ or last summer in Great Britain to this guy James May, and I remember he beat me. One ATP point. I was at like 60, and after he won he called his mom while I was still on the court and said he won(laughter.) So that was probably the worst moment.

An interview with Sam Querrey
Thursday, August 28, 2008

Q. You were cramping?

SAM QUERREY: Yeah, my calf started to cramp a little bit, and then it worked its way up my legs. But I was still able to move out there. It wasn't to the point where I had to quit.

Q. Bet you were glad you didn't have to go five.
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, if I didn't win this last game I don't know if I could have won that match.

Q. Reason for the cramping just doing a lot of work out there, lots of running?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, that first set was a grind. I mean, a lot of those points were twenty‑ball rallies, and with my body type I don't need to be doing that. Need to change something.

Q. Speaking of body types you have Ivo next.
SAM QUERREY: I know. That's the good thing. It's not going to be a lot of baseline rallies, but still a tough one. Guy's got a huge serve.

Q. You played three times and won twice?
SAM QUERREY: Yes.

Q. Guys talk about his serve as a weapon that's almost impossible to deal with. I would think that of all people you feel like you're on kind of even ground.
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, exactly. At least with his serve ‑‑ a lot guys it's up here above their shoulders. With me it might be at shoulder level. But a lot of times you just got to take a guess almost with him.
But yeah, I laid him in Nottingham and he had like 80 aces, so...

Q. Do you feel like why not let's just go to tiebreaker?
SAM QUERREY: Sometimes, yeah.

Q. So this kind of match today, long, lots of points, you had to do the work, second round the US Open. You got through, and mentally it's got to be a good win.
SAM QUERREY: Awesome win. One of the most exciting for me so far. Fun to play out there on Grandstand. Night match and the fans were into it. Big step for me.

Q. What do you think; do you think your body can hold out through another few match?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, I'm going to drink a lot of water, I'm going to stretch, eat right, do everything that I need to do to get better.

Q. So coming into the tournament, did you have a positive feeling where you thought, okay, if I play to my level maybe I can really do some damage?

SAM QUERREY: Yeah, definitely. I have been playing well in practice and it's starting to show during the matches. Hopefully I can just keep going.

Q. What's your pick on James versus Mardy? Tough one, huh?
SAM QUERREY: I know James got him in the past, I think the last two times. So, I mean, you got to favor James.
But Mardy, is on a roll right now. Finals in New Haven and got a good backhand. I don't want to pick.
THE MODERATOR: You're not even going to ask him about the shot around the net post?

Q. Oh, that's right. So that was what, the second to last point of the match, right?
SAM QUERREY: Third to the last. That was breakpoint.

Q. Is that one of your best scramble points ever?

SAM QUERREY: Yeah, I can't remember if I made a first serve or not, and then I ripped a forehand and then ripped an approach shot that I thought was going long, but it clipped, and he just rifled a backhand across court and it hit the tape.
I wasn't going to go for it, and then I just last minute, boom goes the dynamite.

Q. Did you think he was going to make the pass?

SAM QUERREY: Yeah, he had the whole court open. He missed that one.

Q. So a little bit of luck there?

SAM QUERREY: Yeah.

US OPEN - Tableau messieurs - 1/8 de finale

Rafael Nadal (ESP/N.1) - Sam Querrey (USA)
Face-à-face: 1-0

Querrey a tremblé
