Deuxième succès sur le circuit pour Querrrey.(REUT)

Sam Querrey, qui avait perdu ses deux dernières finales a remporté, dimanche, son deuxième titre ATP.

L'Américain Sam Querrey a remporté, dimanche, le tournoi de Los Angeles en s'imposant en finale face à l'Australien Carsten Ball, en trois manches (6-4, 3-6, 6-1). Tête de série n°6, Querrey s'est imposé sur un ace, son onzième du match, face au 205e joueur mondial. C'est la deuxième victoire sur le circuit pour l'Américain qui s'était incliné lors de ses deux précédentes finales, à Newport et à Indianapolis, le mois dernier. Querrey avait d'ailleurs ces deux défaites bien présentes à l'esprit tout au long de la rencontre : «Je ne voulais pas perdre trois finales de rang et j'ai eu un peu peur après le deuxième set avant de revenir fort dans le troisième. J'étais favori pour la victoire, mais lors des mes deux dernières finales, j'étais aussi favori, alors j'avais un peu la pression.»

Vainqueur 7-6(11), 7-6(3) d'Andy Roddick au deuxième tour du Masters 1000 de Cincinnati, Sam Querrey savourait son succès sur le numéro 5 mondial. "C'est évidemment une de mes plus grandes victoires. C'est un grand sentiment."

De son côté, le finaliste de Washington analysait les progrès réalisés par son cadet depuis un an. "Il est tellement plus rapide. Il bouge bien mieux. Il ne joue plus les points à quitte ou double. Il a compris quand il devait prendre l'initiative ou bien être plus patient."

Sam Querrey s'est qualifié hier pour les quarts de finale à New Haven aux dépents de l'Allemand Bjorn Phau. Cette performance lui a permis de remporte l'Olympus US Open Series. Cette sorte de mini-championnat prend en compte les résultats réalisés sur la tournée d'été américaine. L'Américain avait atteint la finale à Indianapolis, puis remporté le tournoi à Los Angeles. Il devance désormais l'Ecossais Andy Murray (vainqueur à Montréal et demi-finaliste à Cincinnati), l'Argentin Juan Martin Del Potro (finaliste à Montréal et vainqueur à Washington) et Roger Federer(quart de finaliste à Montréal et vainqueur à Cincinnati). L'Américain pourrait empocher jusqu'à 1 million de dollars en plus des gains qu'il recevra à l'US Open.

Déjà assuré de décrocher 1 million de dollars grâce à ses résultats lors de la tournée américaine, Sam Querrey a décidé de ne pas s’arrêter en si bon chemin. L’Américain s’est qualifié pour les demi-finales à New Haven en sortant Nikolay Davydenko (6/3 3/6 6/4). La Russie s’est consolée avec la victoire d’Igor Andreev sur Leonardo Mayer (6/4 6/7 6/3).

Querrey surprend le favori Davydenko au tournoi de New Heaven

NEW HEAVEN, Connecticut — L'Américain Sam Querrey a réussi 15 as pour éliminer la première tête de série du tournoi de New Heaven, Nikolay Davydenko, en trois manches, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, jeudi en quarts de finale.

Querrey tirait de l'arrière 15-40 à 4-4 en troisième manche, mais il a remporté les huit points suivants, incluant deux as, pour mener 5-4. Il a ensuite brisé le service du Russe en ne lui laissant aucun point pour signer la victoire.

La deuxième tête de série, Fernando Verdasco, n'a eu aucun problème à atteindre la demi-finale. Il a facilement vaincu Jurgen Melzer, 6-3, 6-1.

Il affrontera maintenant Igor Andreev, qui a battu Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3.

Chez les dames, la championne en titre Caroline Wozniacki l'a emporté contre Virginie Razzano, 6-4, 6-3. La Danoise retrouvera Flavia Pennetta au prochain tour. L'Italienne a battu Magdalena Rybarikova, issue des qualifications, 6-2, 6-2.

Elena Vesnina a également atteint la demi-finale en battant Anna Chakvetadze, 6-1, 7-5. Elle se mesurera à Amélie Mauresmo, qui a battu Svetlana Kuznetsova plus tard en soirée, 7-6 (9), 2-6, 6-3.

Les tournois se suivent et se ressemblent presque pour l'Américain Sam Querrey. Auteur de 15 aces, il s'est imposé face à Davydenko en quart de finale, il jouera Acauso en demi. "Je me suis vraiment focalisé sur ma première balle et sur la qualité de mon service en général, cela a été la clé" a déclaré celui qui réalise une saison sur dur remarquable.

Sam Querrey s'est qualifié pour la finale de New Haven, la troisième de son été Américain après celle perdue à Indianapolis et sa victoire à Los Angeles. Il a éliminé l'Argentin Jose Acasuso, 52ème joueur mondial, en deux sets 6/3 6/4. L'Américain devrait disputer la finale du tournoi dans la nuit face au vainqueur du match Verdasco - Andreev qui vient de débuter.

Q. What do you think of the final at Wimbledon, just watching those two guys go at it?
SAM QUERREY: I thought it was great. I didn't really get to watch it, because I was flying to Newport, Rhode Island, but I had to make a connection in Cincinnati. When I got off the plane, it was 12 All in the fifth set, so I got to watch it from there at a sports bar at the airport.
So I missed the first 90% of it, but it was amazing, kind of did a lot for tennis. People were talking about that, for a solid two, three weeks after. It was just good.

Q. Speaking about doing a lot for tennis, obviously America's always looking for its new tennis star. I guess maybe just an opening to that, who was your favorite American player growing up? Why did you get into the game? Who did you want to be like?
SAM QUERREY: I didn't watch a whole lot of tennis, so I don't really have one favorite player but when I was younger it was always Sampras, Agassi. They were my two favorites. I kind of followed or cheered for Sampras more just because I was taller, he was a little tall. He kind of had a game I would follow rather than Andre; he was kind of more of a aggressive baseliner. And then it kind of switched. Then when I was 13 to 17 it was Andy and James. Those were the guys I was watching.
So, you know, it wasn't really one guy. It was kind of a group of guys. It's not really the reason I got into tennis, and I lived next to a tennis club when I was like 6 years old and started doing the clinics and stuff after school. That's how I kind of got into it.

Q. When did you realize that, hey, I might be more than just another guy at this?
SAM QUERREY: I mean, probably when I was 18 I realized, hey, I can

Q. It took that long?
SAM QUERREY: I was planning on just playing in college. 17 and a half, 18. I was like hey, maybe I'm good enough now to go pro. That's eventually what happened.

Q. Do you get caught up in all these discussions about, you know, America doesn't produce enough, you know, top, top stars and we're always looking for the new American star? I mean, do you ever pay attention to any of that? Do you feel any obligation to try to be that guy?
SAM QUERREY: Not really. Yeah, you hear that question like every week. You know, everyone is doing what they can. You know, I'm making my way up the rankings. John Isner is making his way up. Donald Young qualified here this week, Jessie Levine is playing well. Hopefully there's a group of us that can jump into the top 50, and then, you know, top 20 and then top 10. I think we're all doing everything we can. A lot of times, you know, even if you go back a hundred years, you'll have a period of 10 years where you'll have four or five guys in the top 10, and then years where you might just have one guy. It's kind of like a rolling wave.
Hopefully everyone is doing what they can, and hopefully I don't feel any extra pressure or anything. I hope those other guys don't, but we're all trying our best to get our rankings as high as they can be.

Q. Do you think doing well here would have any impact on tennis in America?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah. I mean, this is really the tournament that, you know, if you're an average sports than, you follow the Grand Slams and that's it. So you don't really know I mean, no one knows what happened, hey, I played Verdasco in New Haven last night. If you're not a sports fan, you have no idea that tournament is going on. Maybe more this summer because it was on ESPN, which has been great. That's much better than The Tennis Channel. Nothing against The Tennis Channel, but 4% of houses have The Tennis Channel. I think it needs to be on ESPN.
The Slams are where the Americans if you want to get it out on the map and you want to make a name for yourself, if you want to move up the rankings, that's where you have to do it in the Slams.

Q. The Samurais, were they up there at the other tournament or who's...
SAM QUERREY: Kind of. They're mainly at LA Open, Indian Wells and some will be here this week. Most are back at school now, but a couple of my friends and kind of cousins of some friends live in New Haven, so they came out last week and took their shirts off and put some body paint on.

Q. Do you think you'll get some of them to come down here?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, actually some of my friends are flying out and staying for the week. So they'll be out.

Q. What would you attribute your rapid success to? Like as you said, you were sort of a late bloomer. You really started, you know, realizing that you could play professionally when you were 18, which is pretty late for most players. You know, three years, you're on the cusp of breaking into the top 20. How have you been able to do that?
SAM QUERREY: I mean, when I was 12, like 12 to 18, I was always good. I was one in my age group and all those. I wanted to go pro. I think a lot of kids want to go pro. There is a difference between wanting to go pro and then realizing you can go pro. I'm sure there are a lot of 12 years old who want to go pro. I wanted to, I didn't realize I probably could until 17 or 18. I think the recent success is it's a factor of the last year and a half, two years and the work I've put in. Even like the clay court season, I thought I was playing great, I was doing the right things. The results didn't show but hopefully I'll just next year, you know, I'll be a little better. I think it helps a lot playing on the clay, going over to Europe and sticking out that six to eight week trip.
And that just all carried over to the summer. I might have, you know, lost a lot of matches there, but I was still playing well, and I was confident. Then I got to come over here and play on my favorite surface, in America. A lot of times when you keep winning you gain confidence, and the momentum just keeps building.

Q. How does it feel now that you've won the US Open series, you beat Roddick in the first round in Cincinnati, coming into the US Open. What does it feel with that amount of confidence?
SAM QUERREY: Feels great. I played 26 singles matches since Wimbledon. I'm ready to go, and hopefully this will be another good week. I've got plenty of preparation, I've played every week this summer. I'm excited and ready to go.

Q. Are you trying to improve your fitness? What are the areas you think you need to work on?
SAM QUERREY: I mean, everything could always get better. But the main focuses this summer, I've put a lot of work into my backhand. It used to be a liability a little bit, though it's pretty consistent. It's slowly turning into a weapon, and then a return, too. I'm holding serve easily most of the time, so I'm learning now I can take more chances on the return games, you know, because I'm holding easily, I can try to put more pressure on my opponents' serve games taking more chances, trying to step up into the court a little more. Always working on my net game. I could always hit that a little better.

Q. Watching the Roddick match, you seems to be the aggressor during most of the match. You were pushing him a bit?
SAM QUERREY: That's my game. I try to do that. I try to control the point especially with my forehand. That match I did especially well.

Q. Were you surprised you beat Andy?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah.

Q. How does that feel?
SAM QUERREY: I mean, that felt good. Any time you get a top 10 win, it's a good feeling.
It was tough for Andy. He, you know, he finaled in Washington and semifinaled Montreal the week before, so he had played a lot of matches. I could tell he was a little tired out there. He maybe wasn't at his best. Still, I'm going to take it, you know.
It felt great, but it's just one match.

Q. But it does give you a little more confidence when you play players in the top 10...
SAM QUERREY: Any time you get a top 10 win, it's going to give you extra edge, next time you play top 10 players.

Q. Now that you're seeded, first couple of rounds you're playing players that are either...
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, I mean, it's nice to know everyone is a great player. You have got Safin floating around in there. Everyone is a great player, but it's nice to know you're not going to draw a top 32 guy in the first round or second round, especially the first round. Every Slam before this I had the same chances as anyone qualifying to draw Federer or Nadal first round.

Q. Is there something about, you were talking about beating Roddick, just in general about after you have beaten somebody, just about everybody knowing, you knowing and him knowing that you can beat him. Does that kind of change the way you feel walking onto a court with the guy, who you've beaten before or maybe you've beaten once?
SAM QUERREY: A little bit. I mean, he has still beaten me three times, you know. I only have beaten him once there. He still has the edge. Definitely gives me the belief, you know, if I do play him again, you know, or that, hey, I've done this before. I've got a shot to win this.
It also helps if you play Federer or Nadal. Andy's beaten those guys. Hey, he did it, I beat him, why can't I beat those guys? So it kind of gives you that extra edge against them, too.

Q. And they also know you've done it?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah.

Q. Did you learn anything tactically, in terms of winning that match that you might be able to play here?
SAM QUERREY: I mean, you've got to tactically go out for the first part I go out and serve big and control the point with my forehand, move the guy side to side. You have to sometimes need to switch up things against everyone. You need to play differently against Andy than you would Murray or Federer or John Isner or whoever.

Q. Did you have to fight through traffic to get here today?
SAM QUERREY: Yeah, I barely made my practice time.

Q. So you drove down
SAM QUERREY: I drove from New Haven last night.

Q. You just had...
SAM QUERREY: The hotel took me like an hour and a half to get here today. Pain.

Q. So you missed your practice?
SAM QUERREY: No, I made it on time. Just barely.

La grosse frayeur de Querrey

Le tournoi de Bangkok s'est terminé avant même d'avoir commencé pour Sam Querrey, un des joueurs en forme de ces derniers mois. L'Américain a en effet dû déclarer forfait après s'être fait très peur. Le joueur de 21 ans venait, lundi soir, de finir son entraînement quand il est passé au travers d'une table en verre et s'est très sévèrement coupé au nieau de l'avant-bras droit.

Un accident très impressionnant qui a conduit le joueur être emmené d'urgence à l'hôpital et opéré de suite. Il devrait être absent des courts pour une durée de quatre à six semaines. La mésaventure de Querrey hier soir affolait une bonne partie de ses compères. Par Twitter interposé, on voyait ainsi Justin Gimelstob lui envoyé des mots de soutien. Le joueur, lui aussi, se confiait par une seule phrase qui veut tout dire : «Le pire jour de ma vie» . Mardi, il avait déjà retrouvé son fighting spirit : «Je vais me battre !» Il s'en tire finalement assez bien alors que la situation aurait pu très mal tourner. American Sam Querrey’s career-best season has come to a premature conclusion after he sustained a right arm injury in a freak accident earlier this week at the ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament in Bangkok.

Querrey confirmed that he would miss the remainder of the 2009 ATP World Tour season with this post on his Twitter account Wednesday: “just got back from the doctor, i should be able to hit balls in a month and hopefully ill be back to 100% in 2 months”.

The 21-year-old Californian had been putting on shoes following a practice session Monday ahead of the PTT Thailand Open in Bangkok when the glass table he was sitting on collapsed. Querrey was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery, and visited a specialist upon his return to the United States Wednesday.

World No. 25 Querrey had put together an exceptional season that included appearances in five ATP World Tour finals – putting him in elite company with the ATP’s big four of Roger Federer (6), Rafael Nadal (7), Andy Murray (6), and Novak Djokovic (7) as players to reach five or more finals in 2009.

He opened the year with a runner-up finish at the Heineken Open in Auckland (l. to del Potro), and stepped up his game another notch following Wimbledon – reaching three straight finals at Newport (l. to Ram), Indianapolis (l. to Ginepri) and Los Angeles (d. Ball). He clinched the 2009 US Open Series at Pilot Pen Tennis, where he advanced to his fourth final of the summer (l. to Verdasco), and entered the US Open at a career-high No. 22 in the South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings.

As the No. 22 seed at Flushing Meadows, Querrey reached the third round before falling to Roland Garros finalist Robin Soderling in four sets. He finished the year with a 41-23 mark.

"Ma physiothérapeute est une sud-américaine super chaude. La douleur en vaut la peine !" plaisante-t-il le 12 octobre dernier sur Twitter après avoir été accidentellement blessé lors du tournoi de Bangkok. "Il s'est penché pour refaire ses lacets et la table s'est brisée. Un morceau de verre l'a blessé au bras. " déclare John Tobias, président de BES Television.

American Sam Querrey on Mend From Accident

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- American Sam Querrey is back practicing for his return to the ATP Tour after he cut two muscles in his right forearm when he sat on a glass table that broke in Thailand.

The world's 25th-ranked player said Tuesday he narrowly avoided damaging the nerve in his serving arm that would have ended his tennis career.

Querrey hurt himself on Sept. 28 after practicing at the Thailand Open. He sat on a couch before going to take a shower. Afterward, he didn't want to sit back in the same sweaty spot on the couch to put on his socks and shoes.

So he fatefully plopped down on the glass table, and it shattered.

''I fell through it,'' he recalled. ''When I got up, there was a piece of glass in my arm. Blood was gushing out. I ran down to the trainer. The doctor came and we got the ambulance and went to the hospital.''

Querrey whipped out his cell phone to display a photo of the open wound before it was closed up with 25 stitches during an hourlong surgery in a Bangkok hospital. He cut 30 percent of two different muscles in his arm.

The evidence is a thin, red 3-inch scar on the inside of his arm.

''I was actually more nervous when I got home and I finally took the splint off after two weeks,'' he said. ''If my wrist moved in the slightest way, it would send shooting pain down my arm. I didn't know if I was going to get better.''

During his recovery to strengthen the muscles in his wrist and recover his range of motion, Querrey was forced to do everything with his left hand, including brushing his teeth.

He says his arm feels good, although his serve isn't quite where it was before the accident.

''My shoulder, it takes a while to warm it up and get that motion going,'' he said. ''Other than that I feel no difference in any part of my game.''

The accident cut short his career-best season, forcing him to miss five tournaments. The 22-year-old Californian reached five ATP Tour finals this year, putting him in the elite company of No. 1 Roger Federer, No. 2 Rafael Nadal, third-ranked Novak Djokovic and No. 4 Andy Murray as players who made at least that many finals.

Querrey won one of those finals, at Los Angeles, and his results were good enough to win the U.S. Open Series and rose to a career-high 22nd in the rankings. He lost in the third round of the U.S. Open and finished the year with a 41-23 mark.

No. 6 Andy Roddick is the highest-ranked American on the men's tour. After him and Querrey, only No. 44 James Blake is ranked among the top 50.

Querrey heard from Roddick and Blake after the accident, but he was most excited about an e-mail from Federer wishing him well.

''That was the greatest,'' he said, smiling. ''I was so happy. It made my day. It was almost worth it.''

He thinks the accident probably cost him a chance to move into the world's top 20.

''Fortunately, my ranking is still high, so I'll be seeded at the Australian Open,'' he said. ''Most of the matches I play now because of my ranking I'm expected to win. I'm not really the new guy.''

Querrey began hitting for the first time last week in preparation for his return to match play at the Brisbane International during the first week of January.

''I really want to focus more next year on the Slams,'' he said.

Mostly though, he's grateful the accident didn't cost him his fledgling career.

''It kind of makes you appreciate some things a little more,'' he said. ''This whole last week I've never once got upset or mad on the court. I'm just happy to be playing.''

Sam Querrey a repris l'entrainement cette semaine. L'Américain, auteur de sa meilleure saison (finaliste à Auckland, Newport, Indianapolis et New Haven, titré à Los Angeles) était blessé depuis le 28 septembre, à Bangkok. Il y avait, d'ailleurs, frôlé le drame et la fin de carrière. Assis sur une table vitrée, il était passé au travers, s'entaillant le bras droit avec un bris de verre. Bilan : 25 points de suture, une heure d'intervention et deux muscles coupés à 30%. De quoi lui faire apprécier d'autant plus son retour sur les courts. "Ça te fait apprécier les petites choses un peu plus", explique-t-il. "Tout au long de la dernière semaine, je n'ai jamais été frustré ou de mauvaise humeur sur le terrain. Je suis juste heureux de pouvoir jouer." Selon lui, son bras se porte bien, désormais, même s'il n'a pas encore retrouvé toute sa qualité de service. Lui reste un mois et demi avant la nouvelle saison et ses débuts à Brisbane.

Sam Querrey a fait son retour sur les courts, ce week-end. L'Américain disputait une exhibition à Atlanta contre son compatriote John Isner. Retour gagnant avec une victoire 6-3 6-4 dans une ambiance très détendue.

Rappelons que Sam Querrey était éloigné des courts depuis mi-septembre à cause d'une grave blessure au bras.

"Nous sommes de très bons amis sur le circuit et cela doit faire quelque chose comme trois ans que nous ne nous sommes pas joués, et finalement, on s'est retrouvé il y a de ça deux semaines. Je suis sûr que ce deuxième match n'est que le début d'une longue liste. On doit faire avec ça. C'est une situation difficile parce que je veux qu'il réussisse et je veux également bien faire. ATP - Belgrade > Querrey sans pitié

Pas de miracle en demies à Belgrade, avec la victoire 6-1 6-2 en moins d'une heure de Sam Querrey sur le jeune Filip Krajinovic. Le Serbe a été totalement pris en puissance et en vitesse par le Californien aux premières redoutables, sans parler de ses mines en coup droit. Querrey retrouvera son partenaire en doubles John Isner en finale. Les deux compères auront à coeur d'obtenir leur premier titre sur terre battue. John Isner voudra sans doute se venger de la finale de Memphis, où il avait perdu face à Querrey. Vues les caractéristiques des deux joueurs, ça risque d'envoyer du très lourd !

Querrey s'impose en finale

L'Américain Sam Querrey, tête de série N.3, a remporté dimanche le tournoi ATP de Belgrade en battant en finale son compatriote John Isner, tête de série N.2, en 3-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-4.
