NEW YORK (AP) - The NBA lockout isn't keeping Carmelo Anthony from bouncing a ball on a New York court.

The New York Knick is slated to take part in the annual Arthur Ashe Kids' Day at the U.S. Open in Queens. The Aug. 27 tennis and music event will be held on the eve of the two-week tennis championships.

Defending champions Rafael Nadal and Kim Clijsters (KLY'-sturz) are scheduled to appear there, as well as the world's No. 1 male player and Wimbledon champion, Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich), and former Open champion Andy Roddick.

Bradley Cooper, singer Cody Simpson, and Anthony's wife, La La, are also expected to participate.

Anthony says he's excited to be a part of the U.S. Open and honoring the legacy of Ashe, the late tennis great.

TENNIS - Eliminés en quarts de finale du Masters 1.000 de Cincinnati, Roger Federer et Rafael Nadal affichent une forme inquiétante. Mais les intéressés restent positifs...

A moins de deux semaines du début de l'US Open (29 août-11 septembre), de nombreuses incertitudes et interrogations entourent Rafael Nadal et Roger Federer, jadis rois sans partage du tennis mondial et désormais en perte de vitesse. L'Espagnol et le Suisse, respectivement numéro deux et trois mondial, ont créé la surprise à leurs dépens jeudi en quittant le Masters 1000 de Cincinnati (Ohio) dès les quarts de finale.

A la plus grande joie du public américain, Mardy Fish, solide tête de série n°7, a renvoyé pour la première fois de sa carrière le Majorquin au vestiaire pour s'offrir une demi-finale face à un autre membre du top 4 de l'ATP, le Britannique Andy Murray. Un peu plus tard, Roger Federer connaissait la même déconvenue face au Tchèque Tomas Berdych (n°8 ) qui, après Miami et Wimbledon en 2010, semble avoir décidé de continuer à ne faire aucun cadeau au Suisse cette saison.

Nadal fâché avec son coup droit

Défait en finale à Wimbledon, éliminé dès le deuxième tour à Montréal, impuissant face au jeu de Fish vendredi, Nadal n'a pas cherché en conférence de presse à se trouver des excuses ni à se cacher derrière ses blessures. Sa récente brûlure aux doigts et le calendrier serré de Cincinnati ne suffisent pas à expliquer la baisse de forme du Majorquin qui n'abordera pas dans les meilleures dispositions le tournoi new yorkais où il tentera de défendre son titre.

«J'ai fait plus d'erreurs que d'habitude sur mes coups droits. Je dois davantage jouer dans le court, être plus agressif», a-t-il estimé. «J'ai quelques points à améliorer si je veux être prêt pour New York. Je vais travailler là dessus. Je ne sais pas si je serai dans ma meilleure forme à New York mais je tenterai bien évidemment tout.»

Rafael Nadal (éliminé en quart de finale du tournoi de Cincinnati par l'Américain Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-4): "J'ai perdu parce que Mardy a beaucoup mieux joué que moi. C'est le sport, parfois tu gagnes, parfois tu perds. Je joue moins bien en ce moment, j'accepte cette défaite et je vais travailler dur. C'est le seul moyen de revenir à mon meilleur niveau (...) J'ai des choses à améliorer avant l'US Open. Je ne sais pas si je serai dans les meilleures conditions à New York. Là-bas, il va falloir que je sois plus agressif, que je sois plus rapide et que je fasse moins d'erreurs. Mais ce n'est pas la première fois de ma carrière que je ne joue pas si bien que ça. Defending U.S. Open champion Rafael Nadal enters the year’s final Grand Slam with less momentum than last year, but also less pressure to repeat as champion.

“After winning last year, the pressure is less,” Nadal said in midtown Tuesday. “I now have all four Grand Slams.”

In the time since he beat Novak Djokovic in the U.S. Open final last September — completing his major trophy collection — Nadal has dropped to the No. 2 ranking while struggling to stem the rise of Djokovic, the new No. 1 and the Open’s top seed.

Nadal appeared Tuesday as part of Bacardi’s “Champions Drink Responsibly” event at Bar Basque, and he was asked about his own drinking habits. (In his memoir, “Rafa,” which was published yesterday, the 25-year-old Spaniard writes, “I barely touch alcohol.”)

“I am the first one, when I have a chance, to go out with friends,” Nadal told reporters during a news conference. “Alcohol is part of that all the time. The thing is ... it’s not necessary to take a crazy amount of alcohol. ... I have [had] fun 1,000 times without drinking too much.

Tenant du titre à Flushing Meadows, Rafael Nadal doute actuellement. S'il n'est pas au meilleur de sa forme, l'Espagnol n'en demeure pas moins un redoutable compétiteur.

Oui, il a toujours su rebondir
L'US Open est le titre que Rafael Nadal a eu le plus de mal à remporter. Souvent épuisé en fin de saison, le Majorquin s'était particulièrement préparé pour l'événement la saison dernière, adaptant notamment son service au ciment new-yorkais. Devenu le troisième joueur de l'ère Open à remporter les quatre tournois du Grand Chelem (après André Agassi et Roger Federer), il avait fait la démonstration de sa capacité à s'améliorer en permanence.

Moins en forme actuellement (seulement deux matches gagner depuis Wimbledon), Nadal est un bourreau de travail et un compétiteur né. Son oncle et coach, Toni, lui a d'ailleurs concocté un programme spécial avant la quinzaine. «La situation ne peut que s'améliorer», estime ce dernier, qui reconnaît que le niveau de son poulain n'a jamais été aussi bas. «L'objectif est de retrouver le niveau qui était le sien au début de l'année», poursuit-il dans Marca. Capable de tirer profit des épreuves qu'il a traversées par le passé, le n°2 mondial n'a besoin que d'un déclic pour rebondir à nouveau.

Non, il n'a jamais autant douté
Encore faudrait-il qu'il trouve ce fameux déclic. Battu par Novak Djokovic à cinq reprises en finale cette saison, Nadal a pour la première fois de sa carrière montré des failles mentales. Le musculeux Taureau de Manacor serait-il en train de se ramollir ? Sa biographie, Rafa ; My Story, sortie cette semaine, reflète d'une certaine manière un changement de comportement de l'Espagnol, prêt à se mettre à nu (une maladie congénitale diagnostiquée à un pied en 2005 aurait notamment pu le contraindre à stopper sa carrière et à se convertir au golf). Plus humain, Nadal fait vraisemblablement moins peur à ses adversaires, qui ne s'avouent plus vaincus d'avance.

Son manque de confiance se répercute en tout cas sur son jeu actuellement. «Je dois être agressif, me déplacer plus vite. Je dois mettre plus d'intensité et faire moins de fautes », reconnaît-il. «Il doit montrer une autre attitude sur le court. Il doit à nouveau prendre l'initiative du jeu. En ce moment, il ne fait pas mal à l'adversaire, il frappe en reculant», renchérit Toni.

Qui plus est, Nadal n'est pas au top de sa forme. «Retrouver l'intensité physique est également primordial, car Rafa n'était bien physiquement récemment», ajoute l'entraîneur. Et le sort s'acharne : le Majorquin souffre de brûlures à la main droite après avoir touché une assiette trop chaude dans un restaurant de Cincinnati, ce qui l'oblige à jouer avec de gros pansements à deux doigts. «J'espère que ce sera guéri pour New-York», confie-t-il. Reigning US Open Champion Rafael Nadal to Participate in Kids Clinic

FLUSHING, N.Y., August 24, 2011 – The USTA today announced that 10 and Under Tennis will once again play an important role in the 2011 US Open, including a clinic with reigning US Open champion Rafael Nadal, an on-court demonstration of 10 and Under Tennis in Arthur Ashe Stadium and a full day of other fun-filled activities beginning on August 23.

Similar to other youth sports where equipment and playing fields are scaled to size for kids, 10 and Under Tennis provides the youngest players with the ability to achieve immediate success by playing tennis on smaller courts, using smaller and lighter racquets and slower-moving and lower-bouncing balls.

The 10 and Under Tennis activities officially kick-off during qualifying week. From August 23 – 26, instructors and local tennis pros will be manning two 10 and Under Tennis courts in the South Plaza to give kids pointers and educate their parents.

On Thursday, August 25 and in conjunction with the US Open Draw Ceremony, reigning US Open champion Rafael Nadal will appear at a 10 and Under Tennis clinic with kids from The Child Center of NY, a Queens-based organization whose mission is to help 18,000 at-risk children and youth each year succeed in life.

Families will have the opportunity to view and experience 10 and Under Tennis at Arthur Ashe Kids Day presented by Hess on Saturday, August 27. Two of the outer courts will be entirely dedicated to 10 and Under Tennis, and it will also be on display during one of the celebrity matches during the AAKD Stadium Show with players from Chicago and New York City taking on some of the top pros in the sport on a 60 foot court.

Kids and parents wanting to experience 10 and Under Tennis first hand can at SmashZone, the premier fan interactive attraction in tennis located in the Indoor Tennis Center. SmashZone will highlight 10 and Under programming with a number of 36 ft. courts for kids and their parents to use throughout the tournament. Back again will be the “Get Sized Right” racquet displays and other information designed to teach parents more about Kids Tennis.

On Family Day Tuesday August 30, for the first time ever, 10 and Under Tennis balls will be signed and hit into the crowd by the winning player following each match played. The balls that they will be hitting are lower compression balls that allow children under the age of 10 to hit them with more control, thus allowing tennis to be more fun.

Families will get a chance to pick up a racquet, work with USTA coaches, and experience the benefits of the play format for themselves when 10 and Under Tennis takes over Court 12 on Saturday, September 3 from 1:00-7:00 pm.

10 and Under Tennis will be on display on center court in Arthur Ashe Stadium with a demonstration featuring kids from tennis facilities in the New York City area prior to the night session on Thursday, September 8.

On Friday, September 9 a 10 and Under Clinic given by a special guest will be taking place in SmashZone involving local children from the Harlem Junior Tennis League and the New York Junior Tennis League both local National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) chapters.

Throughout the run of the tournament the USTA will be offering a free USTA Junior Membership to all children ages ten and under. The membership promotion is open to all first-time junior members until December 31, 2011. This special USTA membership offer will allow more kids to try USTA programming including USTA Junior Tournaments and USTA Jr. Team Tennis. All parents will need to do is stop by the USTA membership booth located near SmashZone.

“Tennis is the sport of opportunity. And there is no better opportunity to showcase the fun and excitement of 10 and Under Tennis than during the US Open—the world’s highest-attended annual sporting event,” said Jon Vegosen, USTA Chairman of the Board and President.

"Tout le monde atteint un certain point dans sa carrière où il se sent un peu vide et où son jeu est dans l'impasse. Bien sûr Rafael Nadal gagne encore des tournois du Grand Chelem mais je pense qu'il a besoin d'ajouter quelque chose pour trouver de l'inspiration. Peut-être qu'il doit chercher un coup droit un peu plus à plat. Peut-être qu'il doit essayer de retrouver ce grand service qu'il avait lors de l'US Open 2010. Il avait ajouté 15 à 20 km/h de vitesse. Peut-être qu'il peut venir un peu plus au filet. J'aurais du faire ça, moi, après mes sept premières années parce que j'avais perdu un peu d'intérêt pour le jeu. Je pense qu'il a besoin de trouver l'inspiration pour s'améliorer et pour atteindre le niveau du N.1 actuel, Novak Djokovic."

2011 Arthur Ashe Kids' Day Cancelled

In light of the current forecast regarding Hurricane Irene, and in order to avoid any possible safety issues for our fans and patrons, many of whom would have been arriving on-site with young children, the USTA is cancelling Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day. This decision also follows discussions held between the USTA and New York City officials. The event was scheduled to take place tomorrow, Saturday, August 27, from 9:30 am to 4 pm. This cancellation covers both the free ground activities scheduled for the morning, and the ticketed Stadium show that was scheduled for 1 p.m – 3pm. The USTA’s inclement weather policy for Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day will be in effect and can be viewed at www.arthurashekidsday.com.

CBS plans to air a highlights show featuring the best of previous Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day performances along with select pre-taped elements from 2011. The program is scheduled to air Sunday, August 28, from 12 noon to 1:30 pm ET.

Nadal not distracted by Djokovic

Rafael Nadal has insisted he is not focusing any attention on world No. 1 Novak Djokovic ahead of next week's US Open.

Ten-time grand slam winner Nadal has been eclipsed as the world No. 1 by Djokovic who has had a blistering season - losing just two matches all year. Djokovic, winner of the Australian Open and Wimbledon, will bid for a third grand slam of the season at Flushing Meadows and is a strong favourite to take the title.

Djokovic is seeded one, with Nadal at two, and the pair can only meet in the final - meaning Nadal is focusing his attention on the first of six matches he will need to win in order to reach the final.

"For me there is no point talking about that as Djokovic is in completely the opposite side of the draw to me," Nadal, who will play Andrey Golubev in the first round, told Sky Sports News. "I can only play against him in the final and I have a lot of work to do to get there.

"I would love to have the problem of facing him as it means I will be in another grand slam final. If it is him in front of me I will try my best."

Nadal has not been at his best this year, although he did capture the French Open title, and has arrived in New York on the back of some indifferent form on the American hard courts. The Spaniard is aware he faces a battle to defend his title, but will not go down with a fight.

"It is going to be difficult," he said. "I will try my best, practice well and try to arrive in good shape and be competitive. It will be difficult, but I am here to try my best."

THE MODERATOR: Questions in English first, please.

Q. What are your thoughts about being here during a hurricane, and how will you spend your time?

RAFAEL NADAL: I don't know what's going on, I think. Nobody knows exactly what's going on, no? But having the club closed, all the places in Manhattan will be closed, so not much. Just stay in the hotel. Maybe watch some films. But we will see what's going on. I never had an experience with a hurricane. Is something new. I think is very bad for the city, for the weekend, for everybody. But, you know, that's a new experience, and not enjoyable experience, but we know how is when is hurricane.

Q. How are the fingers?

RAFAEL NADAL: Much better. I am able to practice with normal conditions.

Q. Bandages? No bandages or anything?

RAFAEL NADAL: Bandages, yes. The skin is still very thin, but it's fine.

Q. A lot of people have said you've been stymied, you've been flummoxed by Djokovic this season. I mean, do you feel like if you possibly meet him in the US Open this week or next week that you have good chance against him?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I am here. You know, I am here at the start of the tournament and you start to talk about a match against Djokovic. I have to win a lot to play Djokovic. And probably him, too. He's not in the final yet. I am focused on try to play well and try to have very good practice this week. That's what I am doing. And the good chances against Djokovic, those chances always depends how I am playing, how he's playing. Not talking about here, talking in general. After we will see, no? I think I played a fantastic year this year. I had a lot of victories all the year; I am not happy about how I played against him.

Q. Could you talk about exactly what happened to your fingers? You got burned in Cincinnati at some restaurant, right?

RAFAEL NADAL: Yeah, I get burned in a Japanese restaurant. Probably, you know, the Teppanyaki grill was there, probably the plate. When I arrived at the restaurant the plate was there, so probably the plate stayed there for a long time. Not inside the grill. Something like this away to the grill. You know, when they put the food, I tried to put the plate closer to me and was obviously very hot. (Smiling.)

Q. So your pointing finger and two fingers?

RAFAEL NADAL: Two fingers.

Q. Can you tell us a little bit about this book? Was it important for you to do something like this?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, it is something that we decided to do. Was the really first autobiography I was able to do. Was a good opportunity to work with John Carlin. We had a very good feeling together. He speaks in Spanish, too, so it makes a little bit easier everything to talk about the emotion and to talk about, you know... I think it was a fantastic experience. I talk a long time with him and remember a lot of things that you normally usually don't think about the past, no? So when you start to talk you remember, yeah, few moments of your career, few moments when you were a kid. Was interesting and I had fun, and hopefully the book will like to the people.

Q. In the book where you talk about your parents' separation, it seemed like it came out of the blue for you, that you did not realize that they were having any troubles. Is that right?

RAFAEL NADAL: I didn't understand that very well. (Translation.) You know, what happened there was but in the book - I never talk about my personal things in the press, but, you know, all the changes in your life needs a little bit of time. That's what happened. So after a little bit of time I was perfect, but, you know, at the beginning it's tough. But, you know, I am not the only one who has the parents divorcing in one moment of my life. Only thing is that Mallorca the family is very important, you are very close of the people that your friends, your family. So any change in this part, these people close to you, affects you, no? That's happened. That's past.

Q. I understand how it affected you. What I don't understand is how you did not see problems between your mother and father. You did not notice problems between your mom and dad?

RAFAEL NADAL: I know the problems, but anyway, I gonna repeat you, I don't want to talk about that now.

Q. How does it feel to come here after having you won it last year? Do you see the tournament different? Is it less pressure because you won it once?

RAFAEL NADAL: The emotions probably are a little bit different, because when you come back after the victory of last year the emotions are higher. Of course, it was the last Grand Slam for me to complete all four. Was very, very nice moment of my career, one of the biggest moments of my career. That makes the comeback a little more special. But if we talk about the goal, is the same. Play well, try to arrive to the final rounds. That's the same, no? Pressure? I don't feel extra pressure. I am happy about how I did. I didn't play very well during the summer, but I am practicing much better here. So we'll see.

Q. Have you been surprised this year by the turnaround, where before it was you and Roger for so long at the top, and now all of a sudden - Djokovic didn't come out of nowhere, but he really has jumped up very quickly this year. Have you been surprised by that change?

RAFAEL NADAL: Djokovic didn't arrive this year, no?

Q. But he was not playing at the level that you were...

RAFAEL NADAL: He was No. 3 of the world for three years. That's not bad.

Q. But he only won one slam.

RAFAEL NADAL: Only one, and most of the people never won one. For me is a little bit strange about the people here from tennis talks about Djokovic, about his big new improvement. Djokovic was here before, no? Djokovic played fantastic before. He had fantastic potential to be where he is today. He's doing great. He's playing without injuries. He's playing very solid, the mental, the tennis. What he's doing is something very difficult to repeat. For me surprise? I think for everybody surprise see a player that he's not losing. He's only lost two matches during all the year. For everybody surprising, but for me is no surprise that Djokovic is No. 1. For me is not a surprise that Djokovic is able to win Grand Slams, because he's very good. That's not from six months ago.

Q. Two questions: One, you're 25 years old. Does it feel strange to have a book about your life at 25? And second, you seem like generally a pretty private person. What did you want to tell? What did you want to accomplish with this book?

RAFAEL NADAL: Well, I am lucky. 25 years old and I enjoyed a lot of experiences in my life. You never know if you can have another book in the future, but I felt it's a good time to have that one. Is a little bit of the history of my life. Is a little bit of the history how I am where I am today. Just open a little bit more of my life to them, to the fans, to the people who support me, the people who are interested about me. For me, you know, now I am a little bit more open with the fans with the Twitter with the Facebook, and now with the book. So I am trying to be more connected with them, and that's probably a good way to do it.

Qu'est-ce que cela vous fait de revenir à l'US Open après avoir gagné l'an passé ? Y-a-t-il plus ou moins de pression parce que vous l'avez déjà gagné une fois ?
Les émotions sont certainement un peu différentes, car revenir après la victoire de l'an dernier, cela procure plus d'émotions. Bien sûr, c'était le dernier trophée du Grand Chelem à gagner pour moi, pour que je puisse avoir remporté les quatre. C'était un moment vraiment, vraiment très sympa dans ma carrière, l'un des plus grands. Donc le retour en devient un peu plus spécial. Mais si l'on parle de l'objectif, et bien c'est le même : jouer bien, essayer de se qualifier pour la deuxième semaine. C'est la même chose, non ? De la pression ? Je ne ressens pas de pression supplémentaire. Je suis heureux de ce que j'ai produit. Je n'ai pas très bien joué pendant l'été, mais ma préparation est bien meilleure ici. Donc on verra.

Avez-vous été surpris cette année par le changement ? Avant c'était vous et Roger Federer au top pendant si longtemps, et maintenant tout d'un coup, Novak Djokovic n'est pas sorti de nulle part, mais il a vraiment pris les devants très rapidement cette année.
Et bien, il n'a pas débarqué cette année, si ?

Mais il ne jouait pas non plus au niveau où vous étiez... Il n'avait gagné qu'un tournoi du Grand Chelem par exemple.
Oui, seulement un, et la plupart des gens n'en gagnent jamais. Pour moi c'est un peu étrange que les gens du tennis parlent ainsi de Djokovic, de sa nouvelle grande forme. Djokovic était là avant, non ? Il jouait super bien avant. Il avait un immense potentiel pour être là où il est aujourd'hui. Il est en grande forme. Il joue super bien, il joue sans blessure, son jeu est très solide, son mental, son tennis... ce qu'il fait est très dur à reproduire. Est-ce que je suis surpris ? Je pense que tout le monde est surpris de voir un joueur qui ne perd pas. Il n'a perdu que deux matches sur toute l'année. Ça surprend tout le monde, mais moi cela ne me surprend pas que Djokovic soit le numéro un mondial. Ça n'est pas non plus une surprise qu'il soit capable de gagner des tournois du Grand Chelem, car il est très bon. Ça ne date pas que de six mois.

Beaucoup de gens disent que vous avez été barré ou bloqué par Novak Djokovic cette saison. Qu'est-ce que vous en pensez ? Notamment si vous devez jouer contre lui ?
Eh bien, je suis ici. Je dois d'abord gagner beaucoup de matches avant de jouer Djokovic. Et lui aussi, probablement. Il n'est pas encore en finale. Je suis concentré sur le fait d'essayer de jouer bien et d'avoir une bonne préparation cette semaine. C'est ce que je fais. Et avoir une chance de le battre ou non, cela dépend de comment je joue et comment il joue. Pas ici seulement d'ailleurs, en général. Ensuite, on verra, non ? Je pense avoir joué un super tennis cette année. J'ai eu beaucoup de victoire toute l'année... (pause) Je ne suis pas content de la façon dont j'ai joué contre lui.

US Open: Nadal se fait peur mais franchit le premier tour

Lors d'un match étrange de 2h49 minutes, où les deux joueurs n'ont cessé de prendre le service adverse, Golubev a eu de multiples occasions de faire douter Nadal.

Il a notamment eu sept balles de deuxième set, toutes sauvées par Nadal ou gaspillées sur des fautes directes.

Golubev menait encore 5-2 dans la troisième manche avant de perdre cinq jeux d'affilée.

L'Espagnol, qui a raté sa saison américaine sur dur cet été, n'a pu se rassurer lors de cette première rencontre à Flushing Meadows et n'a dû sa survie qu'à l'irrégularité de son adversaire, 98e mondial.

Le numéro deux mondial sera opposé au prochain tour au Français Nicolas Mahut.

Nadal malmené

Sans briller, Rafael Nadal a battu Andrey Golubev (6-3, 7-6 [1], 7-5 en 2h49') pour se qualifier pour le 2e tour de l'US Open.



Rafael Nadal ne joue pas bien, mais il gagne en trois sets. C'est le seul constat de ce premier tour remporté (6-3, 7-6 [1], 7-5 en 2h49') contre Andrey Golubev. Le Majorquin s'est fait peur, a dû sauver sept balles de deuxième set et a aligné cinq jeux d'affilée pour remporter la dernière manche. A la sortie du court, Nadal a expliqué son entame délicate par plusieurs facteurs. «Je me suis beaucoup entraîné toute la semaine dernière. Et j'était en plus nerveux, ce qui est normal pour le début d'un tournoi comme celui là, a avancé l'Espagnol. Ce qui ne m'a également pas aidé, c'est que mon adversaire ne faisait pas durer les échanges. Il tentait pratiquement tout le temps de faire des points gagnants. Alors j'ai eu du mal à trouver mon rythme.»

«Je ne suis pas prêt à joueur 10 heures (contre Mahut), a précisé Nadal. Mais ça ne devrait pas durer aussi longtemps. Ca n'arrive que lors de matches très spéciaux.»

Le n°2 mondial est pour autant satisfait de sa qualification. «Je suis avant tout heureux de la victoire. Je ne pense pas avoir mal joué, et être de retour à New York est un plaisir. Mon tennis doit bien sûr s'améliorer, mais j'ai confiance.» Au deuxième tour, le tenant du titre affrontera Nicolas Mahut. «Je ne suis pas prêt à joueur 10 heures, a précisé Nadal, en référence au match record du Français contre Isner à Wimbledon en 2010. Mais ça ne devrait pas durer aussi longtemps. Ca n'arrive que lors de matches très spéciaux, entre gros serveurs.»

Nadal encore en rodage



Comme Roger Federer la veille, Rafael Nadal a eu bien du mal à se débarrasser d'Andrey Golubev, mardi, lors du premier tour de l'US Open (6-3, 7-6, 7-5). Du côté des Bleus, Mahut et Cornet sont passés. Contre-performance en revanche pour Na Li, qui a été sortie par Simona Halep (6-2, 7-5), tandis que Serena Williams s'est de son côté baladée.

LE BIG MATCH
"J'étais nerveux. C'est normal de démarrer un tournoi comme cela". Si Rafael Nadal s'est bien qualifié pour le deuxième tour de l'US Open, mardi, l'Espagnol n'a rassuré personne sur son niveau de jeu. Opposé à Andrey Golubev, 98e à l'ATP, et vainqueur de seulement six matches cette année, le Majorquin a eu toutes les peines du monde pour s'imposer finalement en trois sets (6-3, 7-6, 7-5). "Il ne m'a pas aidé parce qu'il a joué très vite tout le temps. Il a tenté de faire des coups gagnants sur toutes ses frappes, a tenté d'expliquer l'Espagnol, en conférence de presse, après la rencontre. C'était très difficile pour moi de trouver du rythme".

Mené au score dans les trois manches, le numéro 2 mondial a donc dû s'employer pour sauver sept balles de set dans le deuxième acte, avant de devoir enchaîner cinq jeux de rangs dans le dernier, pour empocher la victoire. "Au final, c'est une bonne victoire de gagner comme cela en trois sets secs, préfère positiver Nadal, qui affrontera Nicolas Mahut au prochain tour. Je ne pense pas avoir joué si mal que ça, et la partie mentale de la rencontre fut positive pour moi. Mon tennis peut encore s'améliorer, et je dois notamment jouer un petit peu plus dans le court. Je reste confiant".

US Open Nadal retrouve Mahut

Si Rafael Nadal a bien validé son ticket pour le deuxième tour de l'US Open, mardi, sa victoire face à Andrey Golubev ne fut pas de tout repos, malgré un succès en trois sets (6-3, 7-6, 7-5). Au bout de 2h49 de combat, le Majorquin s'est tout de même qualifié, et affrontera Nicolas Mahut pour une place au troisième tour. De son côté, le Français a remonté un handicap de deux sets, pour finalement battre Robert Farrah (3-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0).
