Charleroi, una ciudad poco atractivo para los visitantes, fue el lugar en que Rafael Nadal se vio obligado a concentrar a su equipo antes de partir con destino a Estados Unidos. Nadal, que cerró con victoria su paso por Bélgica en la ronda inial de la Copa Davis, tomará un vuelo privado esta noche con destino a Oregón.

El manacorí compartirá vuelo con seis personas más: Francis Roig, su segundo entrenador; su fisioterapeuta Rafael Maymó; su agente en Nike, Jordi Robert; Benito Pérez Barbadillo, el jefe de prensa, y dos amigos, Joan Suasi y Marc López. Con éste último, disputará la competición de dobles del primer Masters 1.000 de la temporada.

La primera parada de Nadal al otro lado del charco es la inauguración este martes de un estadio multiusos en la Universidad de Eugene, que ha construido la multinacional estadounidense Nike, la misma que viste al fenómeno manacorí a Roger Federer y a Maria Sharapova, también presentes en el acto. Se perderá el acontecimiento Serena Williams porque sufre desde el pasado lunes una embolia pulmonar que recomienda reposo.

El número 1 mundial, que aprovechará los días de preparación en Indian Wells para mejorar su hándicap de golf al lado de Freddy, sobrenombre detrás del cual está el profesional Fred Couples, debutará en el desierto californiano el próximo fin de semana porque está exento de la primera ronda como principal cabeza de serie.

Fernando Verdasco y Feliciano López se marchan mañana, desde Bruselas, hacia el mismo destino que su compañero de equipo. David Ferrer se unirá al grupo un día más tarde.

El tenista español y número uno del mundo, Rafael Nadal, se medirá en la segunda ronda del Masters 1.000 de Indian Wells a su compatriota Pere Riba o a un jugador procedente de la previa, mientras que Roger Federer lo hará ante el vencedor del duelo entre el ruso Igor Andreev y el japonés Kei Nishikori.

El balear, vencedor en dos ocasiones del certamen norteamericano -años 2007 y 2009-, será el cabeza de serie número uno, por lo que queda exento de la primera ronda y esperará a Pere Riba o a un jugador de la ronda previa. En la misma parte del cuadro que Nadal están también el nacional Marcel Granollers y Juan Mónaco, posibles rivales en tercera ronda.

Avec la doublette Indian Wells-Miami qui débute jeudi et s'étend sur quatre semaines, c'est une période cruciale qui s'ouvre pour Rafael Nadal. En l'espace de quatre mois, l'Espagnol doit défendre une montagne de points ATP dont ceux acquis l'an dernier lors de ses titres à Monte-Carlo, Rome, Madrid, Roland-Garros et Wimbledon. En Californie, où il fut demi-finaliste en 2010, le n°1 mondial se retrouve dans la même partie de tableau que Söderling, Murray et Tsonga.

Rafael Nadal n'a plus joué de tournoi depuis l'Open d'Australie, où il fut stoppé par David Ferrer en quarts de finale, diminué par des douleurs aux ischio-jambiers. Comme la plupart des cadors, le mois de février lui a surtout servi à recharger les accus et peaufiner quelques petits réglages avant de replonger dans le rythme infernal du calendrier ATP. Mais avant de retrouver les courts cette semaine dans un dessein purement personnel, le Majorquin a fait son retour en Coupe Davis le week-end dernier, à Charleroi, où il a joué et gagné deux simples, dont un sans enjeu face à Olivier Rochus le dimanche. A croire que la compétition lui manque.

Surtout, Nadal sait qu'il s'apprête à entamer sa partie de saison la plus chargée. Après Indian Wells et Miami, les deux premiers Masters 1000 de l'année qui s'étendent jusqu'à début avril, le meilleur joueur du monde mettra le cap sur la terre battue qu'il adore. Et cette année, son programme sur l'ocre frôle la démence puisqu'il a ajouté le tournoi de Barcelone à ceux de Monte-Carlo, Rome, Madrid et Roland-Garros. Le Majorquin va donc devoir tenir la forme d'autant plus qu'il va défendre d'ici début juillet, date de la fin de Wimbledon, près de 8000 de ses 12 390 points ATP !

Face à Tsonga en huitièmes ?

Vainqueur en 2010 à Monte-Carlo, Rome, Madrid, Roland-Garros et Londres, demi-finaliste à Indian Wells et Miami, et quart-de-finaliste au Queen's, l'Espagnol n'a que peu de chances de faire aussi bien cette saison. La moindre blessure voire coup de moins bien pourrait aussi lui être très préjudiciable au classement où il compte quand même 4 425 points d'avance sur Federer, son premier dauphin. Son rival suisse qu'il a d'ailleurs retrouvé en début de semaine à Eugene dans le cadre d'une partie de bienfaisance disputée sur un set qu'il a remporté (7-5).

Pour les choses sérieuses il faudra attendre ce week-end quand les têtes de série, dont il est évidemment la mieux classée, feront leur entrée au deuxième tour. Pour ses débuts, "Rafa" n'est pas à plaindre puisqu'il fera face soit à son compatriote Riba (72e mondial) soit à un joueur issu des qualifications. La suite la plus probable ? Un deuxième match contre Monaco, un huitième de finale face à Tsonga, un quart contre son bourreau de Melbourne Ferrer pour enfin retrouver Murray ou Söderling dans le dernier carré, Federer et Djokovic occupant l'autre moitié du tableau. Un menu qui, s'il va jusqu'au bout, pourrait se révéler bien copieux. Mais après plusieurs semaines passées loin du circuit, Nadal ne manque pas d'appétit.

Exempté de premier tour, le numéro un mondial Rafael Nadal, qui a beaucoup de points à défendre en ce début de saison, affrontera le méconnu Rik De Voest pour ses débuts au Masters 1000 d'Indian Wells. Le Sud-Africain, 162e joueur mondial, s'est imposé jeudi contre l'Espagnol Pere Riba sur abandon après avoir remporté le premier set du match (6-4, ab.).

THE MODERATOR: Questions, please.

Q. Can you talk about your experience at the University of Oregon and the exhibition, how much fun it was?
RAFAEL NADAL: It was fantastic, I think, no? It was very, very nice event, I think, so the people there was really fantastic. Unbelievable crowd.
The event I feel like Nike was really unbelievable, so thanks a lot to Phil Knight, thanks a lot to Nike, because I arrived there on Sunday night and everything was really fantastic.

Q. Can you talk about the player party last night? Any impressions?
RAFAEL NADAL: Very good party, I think. Is very good of the organization, my opinion. And good I was there with the friends, and enjoying a little bit the evening, for sure.

Q. You played doubles so well. Why bother with singles?
RAFAEL NADAL: Better. I think I play better doubles, no?

Q. Yeah.
RAFAEL NADAL: I don’t know. So I enjoy a lot playing doubles with Marc. But, yeah, it’s better life if you play doubles than singles, that’s for sure.
But that’s not the case. Tomorrow gonna be difficult match on singles. So I have to be ready for the singles, and the day is a little bit more important for me.

Q. Can you just take us back after the Australian Open, the injury, going back home, how you were feeling, what you were thinking, and moving through Davis Cup.
RAFAEL NADAL: Nothing. That’s part of the game. Last year I won a lot of things and I was healthy for almost all the time. This year I started the season with a little bit of unlucky because I get sick in Doha, and I was playing really well.
And after that, I think I didn’t felt the ball perfect in Australia the week before and the first week of the tournament. I think the virus stays there already, so…
But anyway, I passed the first round, the first week, and I was in the second week. Second week I was in a good position, because against Cilic I started to play much better physically and I was playing good tennis. So I had very good match against Cilic there.
Very disappointing against David Ferrer second game I felt the leg. That’s what happened. I tried to recover very fast and practice in Mallorca, so that’s what I did. I played Davis Cup last week, and I’m here to try my best.

Q. You have many, many matches obviously with Roger, but you’ve also, especially recently, spent a lot of time doing the exhibitions, enjoying each other’s home towns, laughing a lot. What makes Roger special for you as a person? Why do you like him so much?
RAFAEL NADAL: You always do difficult questions to answer. But, no, seriously, I think Roger, for sure he’s a good person, but at the same time he’s a good friend of mine at this moment, no?
We spend a lot of time together, exhibitions in December, exhibitions last years, this year already in Abu Dhabi, we played in Doha, too. Not exhibitions, but we are there and doing events for the ATP all the time.
For sure, our relationship is getting closer and closer all the time, and I think we are feeling comfortable together. So I don’t know. What can I say about Roger? I said everything 100 times. But if you want me to say another time, I think he’s a normal person, and that’s the most important thing, no?
We love competition, but we understand outside competition is the relationship of outside of the court. Doesn’t affect nothing on our performance on court. That’s the most important thing. At the end, we have a good connection together, and that’s why we are always open to do exhibitions or events for our foundations or anything together. That’s why, I think.

Q. Del Potro is coming back strong. Do you feel already he’s a dangerous player?
RAFAEL NADAL: When he is playing, always really dangerous player. He won a tournament. He’s now in second round here. For sure.

Q. So you’re No. 1 now. What is your goal for this year since you already are on the top of the game?
RAFAEL NADAL: The goal is the match of tomorrow. That’s the first goal, no? We will see. I say before, but I felt I was in very good position to try to start the season very well. My feeling before I start the season was better than ever, but sometimes you didn’t feel that well, and finally the things go fantastic.
This time I felt perfect. I was unlucky in the beginning of the season, so just trying to find again the performance of the beginning of the season. I have to be playing similar that I was playing before start of the season when I practice in December in Mallorca. The finals of London I think was very high level for me, and I have to try to be at this position another time. I’m trying my best every day practicing. And for sure winning matches, if I am winning matches, everything gonna be a little bit easier.

Q. Why do you feel Novak has been playing so well the last six months? Djokovic, why has he been playing so well the last six months since the US Open forward to today?
RAFAEL NADAL: I think he  well, he always was an unbelievable player, and I think probably he’s serving another time fantastic, and his confidence is high because he had a fantastic results.
When you are winning, it’s easier to keep playing well. So that’s why, no? He always was there. He was a little bit unlucky, but now he won in Australia, so that’s big confidence for everybody, winning a Grand Slam.
That’s why he’s probably the player who is playing better right now on the tour.

Q. Are you planning to play a similar schedule to last year, or are you lightening things up to avoid injury?
RAFAEL NADAL: Less? Less than last year?

Q. Or same.
RAFAEL NADAL: I cannot play less than  is impossible to play less than last year. Last year I only played obligatory tournaments and a few tournaments to prepare the big tournaments. So play less is impossible.
That’s not gonna happen this year if I don’t have injuries. I gonna try to have the same exact schedule for sure. And we add Barcelona.

Q. Obviously the French Open has been really important in your career, obviously. Are you glad that it’s staying in Paris, or would it have been all right if it went out to the suburbs outside of Paris?
RAFAEL NADAL: I think the important tournaments and historic tournaments, like Roland Garros, should stay at the same place, because that place (indiscernible) tennis and there is a history of tennis. I never thought about  I never imagine about this tournament can go to another place.

Q. How good was your level at Davis Cup? Did you feel like you were playing well?
RAFAEL NADAL: Normal.

Q. So you weren’t tested too much? It was hard to tell?
RAFAEL NADAL: It’s completely different surface of Davis Cup than here. Every day I’m playing better here. Every practice I am improving.
I have to play well tomorrow to be in the second round, the third round. So that’s what I gonna try. If I win tomorrow, I gonna have another chance to play better after tomorrow. If not, I will have that next chance in Miami.
But that’s the sport, and when you try your best, that’s all that I can do. Sometimes things go well. Sometimes the things are not the same. It’s impossible playing perfect all the time, but I hope to be playing well this week.
I don’t have any reason to not play well, because I was playing really well before the injury and I came back. I need adapt a little bit to this court, because I think the bounce like crazy and the ball is very fast.
But I always love this tournament, and I always played well in this tournament.

Q. The clay court season is approaching quickly. That’s the surface where you’re the dominant figure. A lot of ranking points to defend for you. What are your thoughts about that?
RAFAEL NADAL: About what?

Q. Defending a lot of ranking points.
RAFAEL NADAL: Is the same like every year. (Laughter.)

Q. Do you like the challenge? You like that challenge?
RAFAEL NADAL: Even if I like or I don’t like, that’s what’s gonna happen. Always the same. I don’t have to defend no one points, because every season start from zero, and I am focused always.
And when I am playing in Monte Carlo, if I do quarterfinals for me, I won, I don’t know, 160 points, not I am losing 800 points. So that’s how I approach every tournament, no?
For me here, I defend semifinals; and if I do quarterfinals, my approach is am I losing points? No. I am for sure having more points than before, because until the same time, defend or not defend, doesn’t matter.
If I don’t have to defend that points, for sure today I’m not gonna be No. 1. So I never  I don’t believe about defend points or not. You know? I believe in play well and try to win. You play well, you have chances. If you are not playing well, doesn’t matter if you don’t defend nothing or a lot. You not gonna win.

Q. What were the pluses and minuses of playing here? What’s hard and what’s not so hard about playing here in the desert at this facility?
RAFAEL NADAL: I think is one of the better tournaments for the players, one of the best tournaments for the players, because a lot of facilities, the organization is fantastic. We have enough practice courts and enough time to relax and not have this all the day pressure. You have time, you have everything.
And if we talk about technical points, I always love to play here because the ball bounces high. The ball is fast. The court not that fast, but I don’t know. Maybe it’s my vision, but this year I see everything a little bit faster than years before. But I like the fast courts, for sure.

Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, les trois meilleurs joueurs du monde en simple, ont passé hier le premier tour en double au tournoi d'Indian Wells. Nadal et son compatriote espagnol Marc Lopez, tenants du titre dans le désert californien, ont battu les Polonais Mariusz Fyrstenberg et Marcin Matkowski, têtes de série N.4, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/2). Federer a été bien plus expéditif. Associé à son compatriote Stanislas Wawrinka pour la première fois dans un tournoi ATP depuis leur médaille d'or des JO de Pékin, le Suise n'a fait qu'une bouchée des têtes de série N.2, le Canadien Daniel Nestor et le Bélarusse Max Mirnyi, balayés 6-1, 6-2 en 49 minutes. Enfin, Djokovic, en tandem avec son compatriote Viktor Troicki, a dominé les Argentins Juan Ignacio Chela et Juan Monaco 6-3, 7-5.

Nadal: «No hay razón para que no juegue bien en Indian Wells, me siento perfecto»

El tenista español Rafael Nadal, número uno del mundo, aseguró que «no hay razón» para que no exhiba su nivel de juego habitual en el torneo de Indian Wells, primer Masters 1.000 de la temporada, donde necesita adaptarse bien a una pista en la que «el bote es loco y la va bola muy rápida».

Nadal debutó la pasada madrigada con triunfo en dobles juntos a Marc López y este sábado buscará su pase en individuales de un torneo que se adjudicó en 2007 y 2009. Su primera rival será el surafricano Rik de Voest, frente al que espera mostrar un buen nivel.

«No hay razón para que no juegue bien aquí porque estaba jugando bien antes de la lesión (que sufrió en el Abierto de Australia). Necesito adaptarme un poco esta pista, porque el bote es loco y la bola va muy rápida. Siempre me ha gustado este torneo y siempre he jugado bien aquí», señaló Nadal.

El balear entiende que «sumando victorias» logrará que «todo sea un poco más fácil» de cara a compromisos más importantes. «La meta es el siguiente partido», explicó, con un discurso de prudencia y sin querer valorar el resto de la temporada.

«Estoy en una posición muy buena para empezar la temporada muy bien. Me siento perfecto y fui desafortunado al inicio de la temporada, así que ahora estoy buscando el estado de forma del principio del año», apostilló el número uno mundial, con ganas de «dar lo mejor» en Indian Wells.

Le numéro un mondial Rafael Nadal a déclaré qu'il n'y avait aucune raison pour qu'il n'affiche pas son niveau de jeu habituel pendant le Masters 1000 d'Indian Wells.

Lors d'une conférence de presse, Rafael Nadal s'est montré très confiant sur son niveau de jeu du moment et pense qu'il va bien jouer lors du Masters 1000 d'Indian Wells, qu'il a déjà remporté à deux reprises en 2007 et 2009. « Il n'y a aucune raison pour que je ne joue pas bien ici parce que je jouais bien avant la blessure. J'ai besoin de m'adapter un peu à la surface parce que la balle va très vite. Mais j'ai toujours aimé ce tournoi et j'y ai toujours pratiqué du beau jeu. » a déclaré le Majorquin. Il affrontera le qualifié néerlandais de Voest pour son entrée en lice.

2e tour : les N.1 mondiaux Wozniacki et Nadal passent facilement

Les N.1 mondiaux Rafael Nadal et Caroline Wozniacki se sont facilement qualifiés pour leur prochain match hier à Indian Wells, se montrant sans pitié pour leur adversaire. Pour son entrée en lice dans le premier tournoi Masters 1000 de la saison, l'Espagnol n'a fait qu'une bouchée du modeste Sud-Africain Rick de Voest, issu des qualifications et battu 6-0, 6-2 en une heure pile. Wozniacki disputait elle aussi son premier match dans le désert californien et ce fut également une simple formalité (6-3, 6-2) contre l'adolescente américaine Sloane Stephens, 17 ans et invitée par les organisateurs.

Indian Wells - Nadal ne fait pas dans le détail

Pour son retour, Rafale Nadal n'a pas fait dans le détail et s'est facilement imposé face à Rik De Voest (6-0, 6-2). Prochain adversaire, l'américain Ryan Sweeting.

Deux fois vainqueur à Indian Wells, Rafael Nadal s'est tranquillement qualifié pour le troisième tour cette nuit. Il bat en une heure et sans problèmes, le sud-africain Rik De Voest, sur le score de 6-0, 6-2.

La tête de série n°1 n'a perdu que 6 points sur son service, durant toute la rencontre. Il a rapidement aligné 8 jeux de suite pour mener 6-0, 2-0. Complètement dépassé par les évenements, De Voest a subi les attaques de coup droit de son adversaire.

Il n'y a pas eu de match donc et le prochain tour du numéro 1 mondial s'annonce également facile puisqu'il jouera l'américain Ryan Sweeting, tombeur de l'argentin Juan Monaco en 3 sets.

A noter l'élimination de son compatriote David Ferrer, 6ème joueur mondial, face à Ivo Karlovic. Autre surprise après l'élimination d'Andy Murray. Les 5ème et 6ème joueurs mondiaux ne sont donc plus dans la course.
