Britain's Number Two James Ward Knocks Out the Reigning Champion To Reach the Last Eight at Queen'sBritain's number two James Ward pulled off another amazing coup by knocking Sam Querrey, the defending champion, out of the Aegon Championships at Queen's.And he could even join Andy Murray in the semi-finals - the Scot received a walk-over into the last four when Marin Cilic suddenly pulled out - as he faces a fellow non-seed in the last eight.
Ward's third-round tie resumed on Friday afternoon delicately poised at one set all after bad light had curtailed the previous evening's play.
Ward, the world number 215, had lost the first set 3-6 to the number 13 seed but bounced back to claim the second by a similar score-line.
Rain delayed the match even further before the pair resumed on number one court in bright sunshine to trade service holds for the first six games.
Suddenly Ward, who trains with a cage fighter pal from Argentina, was presented with a break point when a Querrey forehand proved too long - and the journeyman pro moved swiftly to the net to take full advantage.
Querrey looked nonplussed as his inexperienced opponent then followed up with an exemplary service game, holding to love to take a 5-3 lead.
The American responded by holding his own serve but Ward had already seized the initiative and aced his opponent for a match point.
He couldn't take that however and had to save a break point before correctly guessing a Querry lob would drop out.
The Arsenal fan made no mistake with a fine serve to wrap up the biggest victory of his career so far, 3-6 6-3 6-4.
Ward, the son of a London cabbie, had previously dumped number four seed Stanislas Wawrinka out of the competition in the second round.
The 24-year-old will now play another unexpected quarter-finalist - the unseeded Frenchman Adrian Mannarino. Mannarino beat number 12 seed Juan Martin Del Potro on Thursday.
