James Ward reaches second round at the AEGON Championships
06/06/2011
British No.2 James Ward has reached the second round of the AEGON Championships after victory on the opening day of the main draw at The Queen's Club.
The 24 year-old defeated compatriot and British No.3 Dan Cox 6-3, 6-1 to reach the second round draw where he will meet the fourth seed and world No.14 Stanislas Wawrinka.
"It was a difficult match" said Ward afterwards."We both started off a little bit nervous which is understandable as it was a good draw for both of us but in the end I played a little better and managed to get through.
"I served well and I think that was the key and made the difference today."
Looking ahead to his second round match against the Swiss No.2, Ward added:
"If I can serve well against Wawrinka in the next round then I will give myself a chance. He is a top class player so I will have to play my best tennis but there's no reason why I can't perform well."
The final British player in action on day one was 17 year-old British junior No.1 Oliver Golding who appeared in his first ATP tournament after receiving a wild card into the main draw.
The Briton produced an encouraging display on Centre Court against world No.90 Nicolas Mahut of France but was eventually broken once in each set during a 6-3, 6-4 defeat.
Mahut, making his first grass court appearance since his record breaking match against John Isner at Wimbledon in 2010, now meets seventh seed Fernando Verdasco in round two.
The opening contest on Centre Court saw Feliciano Lopez defeat Dmitry Tursunov 7-6(4), 6-3 in one hour and 30 minutes. The Spaniard has now won both meetings between the pair, the last coming on the hard courts in Marseille in 2009.
There were also first round victories for qualifier Arnaud Clement, 7-5, 6-3 against Benoit Paire, whilst Marsel Ilhan won in straight sets against Jari Hajek and Michael Llodra beat Jaroslav Pospisil 6-3, 6-2.
Michael Berrer of Germany recovered from a set down to edge out American wild card Ryan Harrison 7-6, 2-6, 7-5 in the longest first round match of the day lasting two hours and 22 minutes.

James Ward upsets fourth seed to reach third round at Queen's
07/06/2011
British No.2 James Ward has beaten world No.14 and fourth seed Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6(3), 6-3 to reach the third round of the AEGON Championships at The Queen's Club.
The 24 year-old from London pleased the home crowd with an excellent victory against the Swiss No.2 and will now face 2010 champion Sam Querrey in the last 16 after the American overcame Rainer Schuettler in three sets.
"This is the best win of my career so far" said Ward. "Obviously serving for it in a big match like that is not easy but I felt I held my nerve pretty well and I was pleased to get the win in the end."
"Obviously it's his first match on grass, so I have to put things into perspective. He's a great player, but it is his first match, and I've been playing a week in Nottingham last week as well to warm up for the tournament, which I think has helped me."
Following victories earlier in the day for both Juan Martin Del Potro and Andy Roddick, Ward took to Court Nine hoping to build on an opening round victory over compatriot Dan Cox and reach the third round at The Queen's Club for the first time.
Ward was playing his second week of grass court tennis after competing at the recent AEGON Trophy in Nottingham and began the match much brighter against his seeded opponent, winning 20 out of 20 points on his serve before securing the set 7-3 in the tie-break.
The world No.216 continued to control the match at the start of the second set with an early break to lead 2-0 before holding his nerve to serve out the match and convert his third match point.
On playing Querrey in the last 16 Ward added: "Obviously he won the tournament last year so he's obviously a top player as well. It will be tough but if I play like I did today and serve well, then I give myself a chance."
There were comfortable wins for two other seeds on day two as both Jo Wilfried Tsonga [5] and Fernando Verdasco [7] claimed straight sets wins on Centre Court against Michael Berrer and Nicolas Mahut respectively.
Meanwhile the doubles draw continued on Tuesday with five British players in first round action. Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins saw off the challenge of Igor Kunitsyn and Ivan Ljubicic, 6-2, 6-4 to earn themselves a second round match against third seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes.
Ken Skupski and Olivier Malisse will now meet fifth seeds Oliver Marach and Marcin Matkowski in their next match.following a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Andy and Jamie Murray.
In the final doubles match of the evening Rafael Nadal partnered Marc Lopez to victory against Thomas Bellucci and Andre Sa. The Spaniards won 7-6, 6-2 and will now play the seventh seeds Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau in the second round.

ATP - Queen's > Ward : "Wawrinka trop défensif"

James Ward remains in quarter-final contention
09/06/2011
British No.2 James Ward will resume his third round match at the AEGON Championships against defending champion Sam Querrey at one set all after a thrilling end to day four at The Queen's Club.
Ward, who won his first ever match against a top 20 player in the form of world No.14 Stanislas Wawrinka in the last round, recovered from losing the opening set 6-3 to win the second by the same scoreline.
The match began at a frantic pace as both players rattled through their service games with Ward coping well against the big serving American.
Querrey eventually made the all important breakthrough in game eight, recovering from 30-0 to take break Ward, and then serve out the set, despite struggling with a possible elbow injury.
The second set followed a similar pattern, going with serve until game six when the Briton seized his opportunity, converting his second break point to lead 4-2.
Three games later and Ward deservedly fashioned set point following a sublime backhand drop shot on his way to levelling the match and ensuring a return to action on Friday.
World No.1 Rafael Nadal is through to the quarter-finals of the AEGON Championships after a 6-3, 5-7, 6-1 defeat of Radek Stepanek.
"I think I played much better than yesterday" said the 2008 champion. "I was playing a very complete match. The beginning of the third, especially the first game was tough, but after that I think I played my best."
Nadal recovered from a second set reverse, in which he lost five consecutive games, to dominate the decider and seal the win in two hours and 24 minutes
The 25 year-old will now face fifth seed Jo Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals
Nadal added: "He is one of those players who is tough to play against. He has a big serve, big movements and is a very aggressive player."
There was an upset on Court One as unseeded Adrian Mannarino of France knocked out the 12th seed Juan Martin Del Potro 7-6(3), 7-6(7).
Mannarino, who had been in action earlier in the day on Court Two to complete his second round match, defied the current rankings to become the first unseeded player to reach the last eight at this year's tournament.
