Del Potro Confirms Queen's Mission As Comeback Gathers Pace
22.03.2011
Juan Martin Del Potro will continue his impressive comeback from wrist surgery when he plays on grass in the AEGON Championships at The Queen's Club in June. He will do so with the encouraging words of two of tennis’ greatest champions - John McEnroe and Mats Wilander - ringing in his ears.
The Argentine, who won the US Open in 2009, missed eight months of the 2010 season, including the AEGON Championships and Wimbledon. He is looking forward to making up for lost time by taking on the top two tennis players in the world, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, and four-time champion Andy Roddick, at The Queen's Club this year.
“I like London, I played at the AEGON Championships a couple of years ago and I really enjoyed it,” said Del Potro. “If you want to be a really good player you have to win on grass courts. I never had good results on grass before so this year could be a chance for me to improve my game on grass at Queen’s and at Wimbledon. I have to learn many things on that surface but I will be ready to do it. Any tournament I play I want to win and If I can play my best level I think I can do it.”
The 22-year-old man from Tandil in Argentina endured a tough time after sustaining his wrist injury last year, but he has recently returned to the sport, winning the title in Delray Beach, Florida, and reaching the semifinals in Indian Wells. He jumped 39 ranking places to No.51 this week.
“I missed everything - the tournaments, the fans, the stadiums, the other players, I really missed everything,” said Del Potro, who was not even able to defend his US Open crown. “But now I’m here again and I’m trying to play a good level. Everything was difficult after my surgery, but those bad things are the past. Now I am having a good ‘present’, I’m healthy, and if I work and still improve my game, I will have a good future.”
Standing 6’6”, Del Potro hits the ball from the baseline as hard as anyone in the history of the sport, and his comeback has received support from the two former World Number Ones, McEnroe and Wilander.
“I certainly hope he can come back to where he was,” said McEnroe, who won four titles at The Queen’s Club, three Wimbledon crowns and now stars on the ATP Champions Tour.
“It’s important that we have some contenders and when he won the US Open it looked like he was going to be a real, legitimate contender for years to come. He was the first guy of that height that could really stand up to the physicality and bruising you take on a tennis court. A wrist injury is a tough one to come back from but it would be great to see him come back fully from it. If he can, he can still be a contender."
Wilander is convinced that he will. “Juan Martin Del Potro is as strong as anyone mentally, and he's got such a big game that if he can stay healthy I do believe he’s going to win many, many more majors (Grand Slam titles) and he’s going to be beating the very best players in the world,” he said.
The AEGON Championships will be broadcast live, every day from 6th-12th June, on BBC Television and Eurosport.
Britain’s Andy Murray will return to The Queen’s Club in June to try to regain the AEGON Championships title and begin a path to grass-court glory at Wimbledon.
Murray, who lifted the trophy without dropping a set two years ago, joins the top two tennis players in the world - No.1 Rafael Nadal and No.2 Novak Djokovic, in the field. The 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro and four-time AEGON Championships winner Andy Roddick will also be part of the line-up at The Queen’s Club, 6th-12th June.
"Winning my first grass court title here in 2009 was an amazing feeling,” said Murray, who had never previously won a title on British soil.
“It means a lot to me to have my name on the trophy next to great champions such as John McEnroe, Pete Sampras and Rafael Nadal who have won it in the past. The Queen's Club has some of the best grass courts in the world, there are packed crowds every year and there is always a great atmosphere. Usually players that have done well at Queen's have gone on to do well at Wimbledon. I can't wait to get playing."
Murray began the year impressively, reaching the final of the Australian Open for the second successive year. He was beaten in the final by Djokovic, who in turn went on to lift the Dubai, Indian Wells and Miami titles in an unbeaten first three months of 2011.
The AEGON Championships will be broadcast live, every day from 6th-12th June, on BBC Television and Eurosport.

Harrison, British Trio Receive Wild Cards Into AEGON Championships
by Press Release | 02.06.2011
Three British players and the highest ranked teenager in the United States have been awarded the remaining four wild cards into the AEGON Championships, which starts on Monday at The Queen's Club in London.
The No. 2 and No. 3 ranked British players, James Ward and Dan Cox, and teenagers Oliver Golding and American Ryan Harrison, have all been given a chance to show what they can do on one of the biggest stages in tennis. They will line up alongside three of the world's four top-ranked players - Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, as well as four-time winner Andy Roddick and 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro.
"James Ward and Dan Cox are the second and third ranked players in Great Britain and deserve their opportunity, and Oliver Golding and Ryan Harrison are both young players with a lot of potential," said Tournament Director, Chris Kermode. "The tournament has a tradition of giving talented teenagers a platform to take on the world's best and it will be fascinating to see how they do."”
Leon Smith, head of men's tennis at the LTA, said: "All three British players recognise that this is both a huge honour, and a huge opportunity for them. I'm expecting them to make the most of this experience, and to build on the progress each of them has made over the past season."”
Golding, 17, who is a member of Team AEGON, reached the Wimbledon junior semi-finals last year and teamed up with Jiří Veselý to win a gold medal at the Youth Olympics. He takes on Bjorn Fratangelo in the Roland Garros junior quarter-finals today.
Ward, the 24-year-old World No. 215, qualified at the AEGON Trophy in Nottingham this week, and beat Tim Smyczek 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(6) in the first round.
Cox, 20, has reached a career-high ranking of 274 this year after a successful run on the American Futures circuit. He currently stands at No.276.
Harrison, 19, is also at a career-high ranking of No.119, and his big-hitting style has been compared to his compatriot Andy Roddick.
The AEGON Championships will be broadcast live, every day from 6th-12th June, on BBC Television and Eurosport.

Andy Murray set for Queen's Club grass tournament

Murray may miss Queen's
Andy Murray seems to have recovered from the ankle injury he sustained at the French Open and looks set to play in the Aegon Championships at Queen's.
With Wimbledon only two weeks away, Murray had expressed doubts about playing in the grass-court tournament, which starts on Monday.
But the second seed, who has a first-round bye, practised on Sunday.
Rafael Nadal, having won a sixth French Open on Sunday, heads the field but Novak Djokovic has pulled out injured.
World number four Murray, who received the bye as one of the top eight seeds, is scheduled to play Xavier Malisse of Belgium or German world number 99 Matthias Bachinger in the second round so will have a couple of days to assess his fitness.
He only managed 15 minutes of practise on the Queen's grass on Sunday before rain forced the 24-year-old to continue playing indoors.
Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia, seeded 14th, is a possible third-round opponent, while Croatia's Marin Cilic and four-time champion Andy Roddick are potential quarter-final and semi-final opponents respectively.
However, after an eventful two weeks in Paris where Murray sustained a partial tear to a ligament in his right ankle during his third-round meeting with Michael Berrer, as well as damaging a tooth, future opponents may not be top of the British number one's thoughts. Andy Murray Murray is looking to bounce back after his semi-final loss on the Paris clay
Wimbledon starts on 20 June and Murray, the 2009 Queen's Club champion, will be desperate to be 100% fit as he renews his quest for a first Grand Slam title having lost in the French Open semi-final to Nadal in straight sets last week.
"I felt pretty good physically when I wasn't expecting to because there were a lot of things going on in Paris," said the 24-year-old Scot, who has also entered the doubles at Queen's alongside brother Jamie.
"I moved well, which is a good sign, and my ankle felt better each day. It should be OK."
Last year's runner-up at Queen's, American Mardy Fish, has also been forced out by an abdominal injury, while French player Richard Gasquet misses the tournament because of a leg problem.
Nadal will face a qualifier or India's Somdev Devvarman in his first match. The 16th seed Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia could await in the third round, with French fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also in his quarter of the draw.
Spain's Nadal believes Murray will be a strong contender on the grass over the next few weeks. "Right now is the start of grass for him," the French Open finalist said. "I think he's a good player on grass, and especially on hard later he will have very good chances to have a fantastic year."
Third seed Roddick begins his challenge for a record fifth title against Feliciano Lopez of Spain or Russian Dmitry Tursunov.
Roddick, who has been struggling with a shoulder injury, told BBC Radio 5 live: "I feel good. I made the correct decision to rest. With Wimbledon and Davis Cup coming up, the last thing I wanted was still to have the injury.
"I certainly always look forward to the grass-court season. It's opposite to clay - I don't need to make many adjustments."
Defending champion and fellow American Sam Querrey has an intriguing opening clash with the Japanese player Kei Nishikori, while Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro starts against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.
Wildcards Dan Cox and James Ward will meet in the first round, guaranteeing Britain another player in the second round, but British junior Oliver Golding, 17, will have to beat France's Nicolas Mahut to reach the next round.
British number seven Alex Bogdanovic needed to win his final qualifying match on Sunday to make the main draw but lost to American Bobby Reynolds 6-4 7-6.

Queen's : La finale avancée à 13h00
dimanche 12 juin 2011 - 11h13
