L'Australie peut se targuer d'être, chaque année, la capitale mondiale du tennis à l'occasion de la première levée du Grand Chelem. Mais si l'infrastructure de Melbourne Park fait l'honneur de tout un pays, les Australiens désespèrent d'applaudir un jour le successeur de Mark Edmondson qui remporta ce Major en 1976.

Alors que des pays comme l'Argentine, la Russie ou l'Espagne comptent des dizaines de joueurs et joueuses dans le Top 100 , l'Australie devra attendre encore quelques années avant que cette relève, si elle existe, n'arrive dans la cour des grands. Elle mise beaucoup sur un jeune espoir nommé Bernard Tomic. À l'époque, Bernard Tomic a déjà signé un contrat avec l'agence de marketing sportif IMG et annonce ses ambitions : "Devenir numéro 1 mondial et remporter tous les tournois du Grand Chelem." :whistle:

Hat trick à l'Orange Bowl

La qualité intrinsèque des joueurs et joueuses aussies laisse à désirer depuis le déclin de Lleyton Hewitt. L'ancien numéro un mondial, battu à Melbourne en huitièmes de finale par le futur lauréat Novak Djokovic, n'est plus que l'ombre du roi qu'il fut en 2001 et 2002.

Et 32 ans après le sacre d'Edmondson, une lueur d'espoir renaît : Bernard Tomic. Inconnu du grand public, cet Australien, né à Stuttgart le 21 octobre 1992, a déclenché l'hystérie aux antipodes à la suite de sa victoire en finale de l'Australian Open. À 15 ans et quelques mois, il est devenu le plus jeune lauréat d'une levée du Grand Chelem en juniors. :jap: Il a terrassé un à un tous ses adversaires pourtant bien plus âgés que lui comme le finaliste à Melbourne Park, Tsung-Hua Yang qui a 17 ans. En demi-finale, il a vaincu un jeune de 17 ans aussi, Bhambri. Son plus bel exploit fut son écrasante victoire contre la tête de série n°1 de l'épreuve, César Ramirez, 18 ans.

Fin 2007, il était le premier joueur né en 1992 au classement ITF avec sa 23e place. Un mois plus tard, il est déjà sur la troisième marche du podium derrière deux jeunes qui ont deux ans de plus que lui. "Pour le moment, j'évolue en juniors. Il me restera encore beaucoup de moments cruciaux à franchir avant d'espérer évoluer à un bon niveau chez les professionnels ", confie Bernard Tomic.

Avant de débarquer à Melbourne, à 15 ans à peine, sa carte de visite faisait déjà froid dans le dos : champion depuis 2004 de l'Orange Bowl en Floride en -12, -14 et -16 ans.

S'il n'a pas encore l'âge des pros, Bernard Tomic affiche déjà une belle maturité. "Je veux gagner mais pour cela, je dois afficher une mentalité plus exemplaire sur le terrain. Je veux être dans le Top 10 dans les 5 ans. Cette saison sera importante dans ma progression car je veux disputer les tournois du Grand Chelem en juniors et l'épreuve de Wimbledon avec les seniors aussi. J'ai conscience de tout le boulot qui m'attend."

Open d'Australie: Tomic, 16 ans, crée l'exploit

Le jeune prodige australien Bernard Tomic a franchi, lundi, le premier tour de l'Open d'Australie. A 16 ans, ce talentueux jeune homme, classé 768e à l'ATP et bénéficiaire d'une wild-card, qui fait d'ailleurs autant parler de lui raquette en main que par les actes de son entraîneur de père en conflit avec la fédération australienne, a disposé de l'Italien Potito Starace en quatre manches (7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 7-6). Au prochain tour, Tomic retrouvera Gilles Muller, tombeur de Feliciano Lopez (6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 4-6, 16-14) lors d'un match long de 5h34 !

Open d'Australie: Tomic, sacrée précocité !

En s'imposant en quatre manches (7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 7-6) lundi au premier tour de l'Open d'Australie face à l'Italien Potito Starace, le jeune Bernard Tomic, âgé de seulement 16 ans et 90 jours, non content de devenir le plus jeune joueur qualifié au deuxième tour de l'histoire du tournoi, rejoint surtout le cercle des joueurs les plus précoces sur le circuit. L'Australien devient en effet le quatrième plus jeune vainqueur d'un match en Grand Chelem dans l'ère open (depuis 1968) derrière les Américains Michael Chang (15 ans et 191 jours à l'US Open 1987), Jimmy Arias (16 ans et 9 jours à l'US Open 1980) et Aaron Krickstein (16 ans et 27 jours à l'US Open 1983). A noter que ces trois joueurs ont tous atteint le Top 10 au cours de leur carrière.

An interview with Bernard Tomic

Q. What does it mean to you to be the youngest winner here in a match?
BERNARD TOMIC: Tough ask. But, you know, it's a dream come true to win a first round in my first Grand Slam. I'm just thrilled that I could pull off a win today.

With the crowd behind me, it was an unbelievable experience, so...


Q. You were quite emotional at the end tonight.
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, I was. I mean, it's the first Grand Slam. You know, to have match point, or be close, it's tough. If I had lost that fourth set, I would have been disappointed.

But I was happy I won the first two tiebreakers. Got a lot of confidence, so it was good.


Q. How were the nerves today?
BERNARD TOMIC: It was good. It was good today. I was happy today. No nerves pretty much going into the match. I was just happy that I could get off to a good start really.


Q. The crowd was so loud. Did you feel any pressure at any stage from them?
BERNARD TOMIC: Not really. They just lifted me even more when I needed it. That was the main thing. If the crowd wasn't there, I wouldn't have pulled it off in the end. It was good for them to be there. Hopefully I can have a better crowd in the next match.


Q. You seemed mentally strong. Where has that come in the last year?
BERNARD TOMIC: A lot of hard work (smiling).

No, that's a new area I've got to work on. There's a lot more areas I have to work on. But I'm happy I won today. Hopefully I can to it again in the next match.


Q. How important was the hit up with Rafa Nadal for you?
BERNARD TOMIC: Good. Gave me a lot of confidence. Might have done it, you know, without him. But I don't know. It was a great hit, to hit with the No. 1 in the world. It's a great experience. I was just happy about that. Happy now that I won.


Q. Talk about your next match. Muller was out there for five and a half hours. Is that encouraging for you?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah. Five and a half hours, that must be long. No, I'm going to go into the match confident. Have a good match under my belt already. He's going to play a game that I don't like. If I can step out there and play good tennis, hopefully I can get through.


Q. What don't you like about it?
BERNARD TOMIC: It's the serve‑volley pressure that he's going to put on me. If I return well, who knows, it can go either way.


Q. How are you feeling? Spent a long time out there for yourself.
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, good. If it had got to the last set, I reckon I would have had the advantage because I was feeling all right. Just the heat at times was a bit funny, so...


Q. I think you said about a month ago you were struggling with your fitness. What have you done in the last month?
BERNARD TOMIC: I must have been lucky today to be fit and to get through, 'cause, like I say, anything can happen in the fifth set. I could have started cramping, anything.

But I was just happy to win in the fourth set. That's it.


Q. Did you see Brydan won as well?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah. I was watching his match as soon as I finished on TV. Well done to him. Hopefully we can get off in the next round.


Q. Have you played in sunglasses before?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, it's the sun that's been killing me the last few months around Gold Coast and Queensland. I've started using them a little bit more. It's good to wear them. It protects your eyes, so it's good.


Q. It's something you've become used to?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, well, the sun's really bad here. You can't see your ball toss when you're throwing it. To have sunglasses is pretty good for me, I think.


Q. Do you think Starace showed your backhand enough respect?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, I mean, I hit it down the line whenever I needed it. That's what got me through in the end. You know, I think all the tiebreak I finished it off with a good backhand. Especially the last point of the match was when I needed it, too.


Q. It's been a good day for Australian tennis after the criticism its had. Do you think the criticism has been fair?
BERNARD TOMIC: That's not my business to deal with. I'm just happy I got out there and got the opportunity to play with a wild card. Now I'm through. Things are getting better. So hopefully I can keep going well.


Q. With the winning, do you feel there is good stocks in Australian tennis coming through?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, the win that Brydan had as well, we're all going well. But now in the second round, hopefully we can win again.


Q. How about the prospects of possibly playing on Rod Laver Arena?
BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, I played on it before, juniors. But playing a men's match there, it's going to be unbelievable if I get the chance. We'll have to wait and see.


Q. You look and play as if you're very cool on an extremely hot day. Are you as cool inside as you seem to be?
BERNARD TOMIC: Not really, no (smiling). But it's something I don't like to show my opponents. It's good to have that ability.


Q.Been a lot of pressure on you as Australia's next great hope. You handled that well today. Are you ready to continue coping with that sort of pressure?
BERNARD TOMIC: I am. I mean, anything can happen right now. I'm in the second round. You know, who knows, I could get through.

But the guy is a great player. He's got to the quarters of the U.S. There's not much I can do if he's serving bombs, so we'll see.


Q. What were you feeling in the fourth set when you had two set points?
BERNARD TOMIC: I was just like, Make it somehow. Just hit a backhand down‑the‑line winner on one of them. I managed to do that, so I was happy (smiling).


Q. How do you feel about the pressure, being in your home slam and that sort of stuff?
BERNARD TOMIC: It's a big feeling to play a Grand Slam, my first one. It's a great experience. Nothing could be better than winning a first round in your first one. That's it.


Q. Do you enjoy that type of pressure? Thrive on it?
BERNARD TOMIC: I do. I do.

Tomic banni un mois !

Le jeune espoir du tennis australien, Bernard Tomic, a été exclu de toutes compétitions pendant un mois pour mauvais comportement.

Il n’a que 16 ans et commence déjà à faire parler de lui sur le plan extra sportif. Bernard Tomic a été exclu du circuit jusqu’au 6 avril prochain par la Fédération internationale de Tennis ! Pour quelle raison ? Pour s’en être pris de manière très violente aux officiels en décembre dernier pendant un match contre Marinko Matošević à Sorrento (Australie). Son père, en charge de son entraînement, lui avait même ordonné de quitter le court. Tomis a également écopé d’une amende de 1560 dollars.

Bernard Tomic, l'espoir australien, a tapé dans l'œil de Nick Bollettieri. "Je pense que Bernard a la capacité de tout faire sur un court. Il a tous les coups, mais il doit encore changer beaucoup de choses pour être professionnel, mais il peut le faire", a assuré le technicien américain. Lleyton Hewitt, seul Australien du top 100, doit espérer l'arrivée du petit prodige du bout du monde.

L'espoir du tennis australien d'origine croate Bernard Tomic a décidé de quitter l'Académie Bollettieri en Floride pour aller en Australie.
Aujourd'hui classé 302e, âgé seulement de 16 ans, Bernard Tomic a réaisé sa meilleure performance chez les adultes sur l'Open d'Australie 2008 en atteignant le deuxième tour après avoir dominé Starace.

Challenger > La bonne opération de Tomic

Bernard Tomic s'est imposé cette semaine au Challenger de Burnie. Issu des qualifications, le jeune Australien a aligné 7 victoires d'affilée pour s'adjuger le titre. Il gagne ainsi 80 places au classement ATP et pointe ce lundi au 209ème rang mondial.

Bernard Tomic, grand espoir du tennis australien, a déclaré forfait en début de semaine pour les play-off de l'Open d'Australie, tournoi permettant d'obtenir une Wild Card pour le premier Grand Chelem de l'année. Or ce jeudi le quotidien Herald Sun met le feu aux poudres. Selon leurs informations, Tomic se serait entraîné dans le Queensland le premier jour du tournoi et était donc tout à fait apte jouer. En fait, il n'aurait pas participé aux play-off se sachant quasi assuré d'obtenir une Wild Card. Craig Tiley, directeur de l'Open d'Australie réagit : "Si ce que dit ce journal est vrai, un, je serais très embêté et deux, je réunirais l'équipe organisatrice pour prendre une décision. En tout cas, je déconseille fortement à qui que ce soit de faire l'impasse sur les play-off en comptant sur une Wild Card décernée de manière arbitraire. Nous avons créé cet évènement de manière à ce que les joueurs puissent faire leurs preuves, décrocher leur invitation et bien se préparer pour l'Open d'Australie."

Wild card Tomic to face Matosevic in AEGON Trophy quarter-finals

Australian Bernard Tomic’s AEGON Trophy success continued on Thursday as he beat eighth seed Bobby Reynolds in straight sets to reach the quarter finals in Nottingham.

Wildcard entry Tomic hasn’t dropped a set since his arrival at the Nottingham Festival of Tennis after beating fellow Australian Carsten Ball, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round and then a 6-4, 6-1 victory over American Reynolds.

The 18-year-old will now face Marinko Matosevic in the quarter finals after he recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ruben Bemelmans from France.

“I am happy with my performance today,” said Tomic. “I competed here last year and didn’t do very well, so I am really pleased to be in the quarter finals.

“I think my game is suited to grass and if I keep winning like this then it’s good for the season ahead.”

World number 170 Michelle Larcher de Brito booked her place in the women’s semi final against American Sloane Stephens.

After winning the first set 6-3, Larcher de Brito then went on to drop the second set 3-6 before recovering to close out the game 6-2.

The 18-year-old from Portugal is competing in the AEGON Trophy for the first time and said her first experiences of the Nottingham Tennis Centre have been all positive.

“Sloane is a very good player so I really had to concentrate and I am just pleased that I managed to win the match,” she said.

“Tomorrow is the semi final so everyone will have been playing for a few days and got some practice in so it should be a good match.”

Larcher de Brito will now face Olga Govortsova of Belarus who beat Kai-Chen Chang from Taiwan in 7-6, 7-5.

Dmitry Tursonov ended Brit James Ward’s challenge in Nottingham 6-1, 7-5 on Centre Court.

The 24-year-old British number two battled through three qualifying games as well as a first round match against American Tim Smyczek to set up a match with the Russian.

But Tursonov, who has twice reached the fourth round at Wimbledon, sealed the win to book his quarter final berth.

Irish qualifier Conor Niland was edged out in three sets 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to Japan’s Tatsuma Ito while Gilles Muller shocked third seed Ryan Sweeting 7-6, 6-4.

In the women’s draw, there were also semi-final places for Alison Riske and Eleni Daniilidou who triumphed over Romina Oprandi and Tamira Paszek respectively.

Top seed men’s doubles pairing Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins reached the semi-finals with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Yves Allegro and Adrian Mannarino.

An all-Brit final remains a possibility after Ward and Dan Cox teamed up to beat Carsten Ball and Ken Skupski 6-3, 7-5 in the bottom half of the draw.
