Haase signe à Quimperlé !

67e mondial, le Néerlandais Robin Haase intègre le club de tennis de Quimperlé, qui évolue en National 1A.

Désireux de renforcer son équipe depuis son accession en N1A, Quimperlé a réalisé un gros coup en s’attachant les services de Robin Haase, 67e à l’ATP. «Pour situer la valeur de ce joueur de 23 ans, il suffit de dire qu’il a poussé respectivement Almagro et Nadal au 5e set à Roland-Garros et Wimbledon cette saison. C’est donc un joueur performant sur toutes les surfaces. Il a de plus remporté trois tournois Challenger dans l’année. Autant dire que pour le club et la région, sa venue représente un événement extraordinaire. Ses prétentions financières sont raisonnables. Pour autant nous ne pourrons l’utiliser pour les cinq journées. Mais je m’arrangerai pour le faire jouer à domicile devant notre public», explique l’entraîneur Philippe Huon à Ouest-France. Le Néerlandais sera sollicité le 13 novembre pour la réception de Villa Primrose Bordeaux !

ATP > Retour gagnant pour Robin Haase

Robin Haase sera l'un des sérieux candidats au titre du Meilleur retour sur le circuit ATP de l'année. Le Hollandais, qui a subit deux opérations au genou droit en 2008 et 2009 était tombé au 673e rang mondial il y a un an. Avec cinq challengers remportés cette année et un ratio de 32 victoires pour 8 défaites, Haase est revenu dans le top 60 et occupe le 59e rang mondial actuellement.

Robin Haase - the man for 2011?

Men's tennis has never had it so good.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are not only possibly the two greatest players ever to grace the game, they are also two of the biggest stars in world sport and brilliant ambassadors to boot.

They have brought with them an all-court game that is dynamic and exciting to watch while the players snapping at their heels, such as Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, are stars in their own right.

Having a consistent top four has added to the intrigue but it has also illustrated a trend that is starting to provoke concern - the lack of young players coming through the ranks.

The leading quartet were all making their mark at the top level as teenagers, and hot on their heels came Juan Martin Del Potro and Marin Cilic, who also blazed a route to the top 10.

But since then the conveyor belt has stuttered badly. Those hunting for teenage talent in the top 100 today will be disappointed - the youngest player is 20-year-old Lithuanian Richard Berankis at number 87.

Instead, there are 12 players over 30 and the average age is heading swiftly in that direction.

There are certainly talented youngsters out there - although perhaps not of the same calibre as the previous generation - but the growing strength in depth and the increased physicality of the men's game mean it is becoming a much longer road to the top.

Tennis is a gruelling sport, particularly if you are scraping your living on the Challenger and Futures circuits, and the worry must be that young players will despair of ever making a breakthrough and be lost to the game.

Federer voiced his thoughts on the issue recently, saying: "There's not a whole lot of promising newcomers. I was asking myself the question, why don't we have any teenagers in the top 100?

"It's quite surprising to me because when I was coming up with Lleyton Hewitt, Marat Safin, Andy Roddick, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Tommy Haas, they were all excellent players and in the top 100 as teenagers.

"It was a normal thing. Boris Becker won Wimbledon and Michael Chang won the French Open. On the women's side it was even more extreme. But now they have a similar trend it seems."

Nevertheless, there are some encouraging signs. Berankis - part of the Lithuania team that shocked Great Britain in the Davis Cup in March - has risen steadily throughout 2010 and could well make the top 10 in the future.

Bulgarian 19-year-old Grigor Dimitrov, touted as the next Federer by some, is just outside the top 100, while Bernard Tomic of Australia and US starlet Ryan Harrison are also ones to watch.

For that quartet, their time is likely to be further in the future, but one player who could be ready to really make his mark is 23-year-old Robin Haase.

The Dutchman was a late starter in the professional ranks after choosing to concentrate on his education but he made up for lost time and aged 20 had beaten both Tomas Berdych and Andy Murray.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly until a knee injury in 2008 put him out of action for 18 months and sent him plummeting down the rankings.

When he resumed his career in November 2009, Haase was officially the 673rd best player in the world. It is a measure of his talent and attitude then, that 13 months later he sits 65th.

Five Challenger titles were the bedrock of that rise but there were also successes on the ATP World Tour, most notably in his last event of the season in Basle, where he came through qualifying before reaching the quarter-finals.

The match that really caught the eye, though, was at Wimbledon. Having beaten James Blake in straight sets in round one, Haase promptly took two sets off eventual champion Nadal before the Spaniard and the occasion got the better of him.

Haase is a thoroughly modern player, standing 6ft 3in and possessing huge groundstrokes, and, if he can find the consistency to match, then expect his rapid rise to continue in 2011.

Il affrontera pour une place en demi-finale le vainqueur du match entre le Suisse Stanislas Wawrinka et le qualifié belge David Goffin.

Tête de série n°10, le Néerlandais s'est défait de l'Ukrainien Alexandr Dolgopolov, tête de série n°3, en deux manches (6/4, 6/4) sur le Center Court. Haase tentera ainsi de se hisser en finale et il défiera, pour ce faire, Julien Benneteau qui s'est défait de Sergiy Stakhovsky.
