Plutôt tendre lors des Masters Series de Toronto et Cincinnati, respectivement éliminé d'emblée par Gilles Simon et Gaël Monfils, le jeune Donal Young s'est offert une belle perf mardi en s'offrant le scalp de Tommy Haas à Los Angeles. L'Américain, ancien patron du circuit junior, a disposé de l'Allemand en deux manches (6-2, 6-4) pour rallier le deuxième tour où il retrouvera le Français Marc Gicquel.

Q. How did it feel to be on center court?
DONALD YOUNG: It was great. I really enjoyed it. First time, and I think it was even better because I was playing an American, so a lot of people came out to watch. I enjoyed it and I definitely want to experience it a lot more.


Q. Are you more disappointed in the loss than you are happy the way the match went?
DONALD YOUNG: Either way. You know obviously a little disappointed I lost. You look who you're playing. He's playing right now. He's like the second, one of the top two Americans, and, you know, this year hasn't been too great for me, but I've stayed in the top 100 and tried to keep playing hard.
I mean, I'm not really disappointed because I'm happy with the way I played at that stage. I would have been disappointed if it had gone like the first set and third set went. The whole time definitely I would have been upset but I'm happy and okay with myself with coming back a little bit.


Q. What was going through your mind as you entered that fifth set, having never been in a fifth set before?
DONALD YOUNG: I was excited to actually play my first fifth set. Most people probably wouldn't be excited. Obviously you don't want it to go five. It kept me in the match. I was excited. I don't know too much else to say about it. It wasn't like court 17, fifth‑setter and too many people not watching. It was a night match on Ashe against one of the best Americans we have, and it was great to go five and giving him a good match.


Q. What was different for you out there?
DONALD YOUNG: The crowd, the stadium was big. I mean, I've played in big stadiums like Louis Armstrong and whatnot. I wasn't playing, you know, someone from like New York and that they like and there's a big crowd favorite and he came out with a Mets outfit on, and they love that. It was different for sure.


Q. How much do you hope this means to you as far as moving forward now, because many people consider this to be a breakthrough?
DONALD YOUNG: Definitely. You can be a little disappointed because last year I made third round. I'm looking at points, they're coming off. But if you look at experience and getting out there and playing the game, it was great. I really enjoyed it and I think it's a big step forward, if I can keep playing like this, with someone No. 9 in the world. And I'm pretty sure someone a lot lower, if I played, I would beat him.


Q. How do you feel physically before the fifth set?
DONALD YOUNG: I was actually surprised. I was thinking, you know, I might go in here and cramp up and not be able to continue. I surprised myself, and I'm really, you know, happy with it. Obviously you're feeling a little tired after the match, but to not, you know, not cramp and not be able to continue, it was great for me.

Tombeur d'Andy Murray au tour précédent, l'Américain Donald Young a été très loin lundi de pouvoir reproduire le même jeu face à Tommy Robredo. Battu en deux sets (6-0, 6-4), le 143e joueur mondial - qui ne trouve décidément pas la clé pour reproduire régulièrement la même qualité de jeu - ne verra pas les huitièmes de finale, logiquement dominé par un joueur d'expérience et dont le niveau de jeu est d'une régularité exemplaire.

Donald Young serait-il en train de passer un cap ? Attendu par son pays pour être un des prochains grands joueurs américains, le joueur de 22 ans a réalisé un gros match aussi bien sur le plan du tennis que dans la tête afin de dominer en cinq manches (7-6[9], 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6[1]) Stanislas Wawrinka, tête de série n°14.

Bangkok - Young attend Monfils

Donald Young a battu le Japonais Go Soeda (JPN) 6-1, 6-2, en quart de finale du tournoi de Bangkok. L'Amériain pourrait affronter Gaël Monfils dans le dernier carré, si le Français parvient à se défaire de Jarkko Nieminen.

Gaël Monfils ne disputera pas la finale à Bangkok. Le Français a raté le coche face à Donald Young (4-6, 7-6[5], 7-6[5]).

Au terme d'une fin de match sous haute tension, Donald Young s'est qualifié pour la finale du tournoi de Bangkok aux dépens de Gaël Monfils en trois sets (4-6, 7-6[5], 7-6[5]) et 2h46' de jeu. Monfils a pourtant semblé avoir le match en mains en menant 6-4, 4-2 puis 4-1 dans la manche décisive, mais la fougue du gaucher de 22 ans a fini par avoir le dernier mot.

A l'image du jeu décisif où il était mené 5-3, l'Américain a fait preuve d'un joli culot, lâchant tous ses coups et prenant sa chance à fond. Au filet ou en fond de court, ses frappes à plat ont fait craquer la défense du Tricolore qui, pour son premier tournoi depuis l'US Open et une blessure à un genou, a paru un peu court et sans doute un peu trop attentiste sur les points importants. Sur la balle de match en revanche il a voulu prendre un risque en deuxième balle, mais n'a été récompensé que par une double-faute. La joie démonstrative de Young une fois le match en poche a traduit toute l'envie et la détermination d'un joueur dont on a vanté le potentiel avant de le brûler et qui cette saison a vraiment franchi un cap. Il jouera désormais le titre face au vainqueur de la rencontre opposant Andy Murray à Gilles Simon.

En 2011, le jeune Américain Donald Young n'a cessé de progresser. Hors du top 100 en début de saison, il a gagné près de 100 places pour passer de la 127e à la trente-neuvième place mondiale.



Fin 2010, Donald Young a vingt-et-un ans. Il est classé 127e à l'ATP et n'a disputé que six tournois professionnels ATP, pour trois victoires sur le circuit. En 2011, il va participer à six tournois Challenger seulement, car le jeune Américain va éclore sur le circuit professionnel, avec treize tournois ATP 250 et 500 Series et Masters 1000 et les quatre tournois du Grand Chelem.

Sur les quatre majeurs, alors que son meilleur résultat s'avérait être un troisième tour à l'US Open 2007, il parvient en fin d'année à atteindre les huitièmes de finale à Flushing Meadows, match qu'il jouera face à un adversaire prestigieux, Andy Murray.

Andy Murray, avant sa rencontre à l'US Open en fin d'année, il l'a déjà battu, à la surprise générale en début de saison. Et pas dans un tournoi de seconde zone : les deux hommes se sont rencontrés lors du Masters 1000 d'Indian Wells où, poussé par son public, l'Américain a su battre son premier joueur membre du top 10 mondial.

Et lors de l'US Open, avant sa défaite face au Britannique, le jeune Young n'a pas battu que des bras cassés ! En effet, il s'est défait d'un membre du top 15, Stanislas Wawrinka au deuxième tour, et le numéro vingt-quatre mondial Juan Ignacio Chela.



Jouer sur dur, c'est comme jouer à la maison !
Il faut croire que jouer sur ses terres lui réussit particulièrement car trois semaines plus tôt, lors du 500 Series de Washington, il avait atteint les demi-finales, éliminant la tête de série numéro quatre Jurgen Melzer au deuxième tour, son compatriote Michael Russel en huitièmes et le vingt-sixième joueur mondial Marcos Baghdatis en quarts. D'une manière générale, comme beaucoup d'Américains, le dur est sa surface de prédilection, et il a réalisé une saison plus que correcte sur ce revêtement en 2011. Ainsi, à Bangkok, en indoor, ce qui requiert un jeu encore plus rapide, il a atteint la finale d'un 250 Series. Battu en finale une nouvelle fois par Andy Murray, il avait éliminé Gaël Monfils, huitième joueur mondial à l'époque et tête de série numéro deux du tournoi, ainsi que la quatrième tête de série, Guillermo Garcia Lopez.

On souhaite donc à Donald Young que 2012 soit l'année de la confirmation voire de la consécration, et qu'il obtienne son premier titre sur le circuit professionnel.

L'avenir leur appartient-il ?

Ils sont jeunes, bourrés de talent, et rêvent de devenir n°1 mondial un jour. Kei Nishikori, Milos Raonic, Donald Young, Bernard Tomic et Grigor Dimitrov devraient en toute logique poursuivre leurs progressions en 2012. Petites descriptions de ces joueurs qui pourraient bien assez rapidement frapper aux portes du top 10 de l'ATP.

Donald YOUNG (22 ans, 39e mondial)
En 2005, à 16 ans, il atteignait la place de n°1 mondial chez les juniors, devenant du même coup le plus jeune joueur à accéder à ce rang. Grand espoir du tennis américain, Donald Young a mis le temps à percer chez les grands, usant pendant de longues années ses baskets sur le circuit Challenger. Mais cette saison le déclic est survenu. Le Chicagoan, plongé dans les abîmes du classement fin 2009, a repris sa carrière en mains et a terminé la saison à la 39e place, sa meilleure marque jusque-là. Petit format pour un joueur de ce standing (1,83 m, 73 kilos), ce gaucher compense par un sens tactique très développé et un excellent jeu de jambes. Comme bon nombre de ses compatriotes, il apprécie particulièrement le ciment, surface sur laquelle il a atteint les huitièmes de finale à l'US Open et la première finale de sa carrière, à Bangkok (défaites face à Murray à chaque fois). Il lui faudra confirmer en 2012, et peut-être aussi oser mettre le pied sur terre battue.

COUCH: It was the Tweet heard 'round the tennis world: "Fu—USTA!! Their full of sh--!" That was the end of a story we'll call How Not to Develop a Prodigy. Donald Young and the USTA had irreconcilable differences. Young was officially and finally a story of failed hype and lost hope. And then? Well, maybe he just finally developed. Or maybe the public venting – Patrick McEnroe responded with a list of all the USTA had done for Young, all but calling him an ingrate – accomplished something. Sometimes a situation takes a bottoming out. Young’s ranking went from 95 into the 80s and then the 50s and 40s. Everyone who had given up on him was noticing. He reached the final 16 of the US Open and rose all the way to No. 39. The USTA, which had considered dumping him, was coaching him again. See how well harmony works? And now, well, the mess has continued. Young decided to go back to his parents as his primary coaches. At 22, seven years on tour, Young could be in the top 20 by the end of 2012. Or, he could be back out of the top 100.

Countdown To 2012 - Names To Look Out For

As part of our 'Countdown to 2012' series, ATPWorldTour.com profiles the rising stars who will look to make their mark in the upcoming season.

The Australian Open has a tradition of setting the stage for burgeoning ATP World Tour stars to make their breakthrough. Remember Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2008? What about Marcos Baghdatis lighting up the court in 2006?

Canadian Milos Raonic announced himself on the world stage in Melbourne this year, qualifying into the main draw before beating World No. 10 Mikhail Youzhny to reach the fourth round (l. to Ferrer). The 20 year old went on to be voted 2011 ATP World Tour Newcomer of the Year after winning his first title at the SAP Open (d. Verdasco) in San Jose and finishing on the verge of the Top 30.

Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov was another star to emerge at the first major tournament of the year, beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Robin Soderling to reach the quarter-finals (l. to Murray). The enigmatic 23 year old would finish the year No. 15 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings after compiling a 38-29 match record, including winning his first ATP World Tour title at the ATP Studena Croatia Open in Umag (d. Cilic).

As the new season approaches, Raonic and Dolgopolov won’t be the only players looking to back up strong 2011 results. Russia’s Alex Bogomolov Jr., was named the 2011 ATP World Tour Most Improved Player of the Year after rising from No. 166 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings at the end of 2010 to a career-high No. 33 in November. At the age of 28, he compiled a 27-21 match record, eclipsing the total number of matches he had won on the ATP World Tour prior to this season.

Going into 2012 a host of rising ATP World Tour stars are poised to make their move in the South African Airways ATP Rankings. All eyes will be on leading Australian prospect, World No. 42 Bernard Tomic, who showed his promise with a run through to the 2011 Wimbledon quarter-finals (l. to Djokovic) as a qualifier. The Gold Coast teenager excited local fans in Melbourne last year with victories over two Top 50 players before falling in the third round to Rafael Nadal.

American Donald Young made his long-awaited mark at this year’s US Open, defeating Stanislas Wawrinka en route to the fourth round, before going on to reach his first ATP World Tour final at the PTT Thailand Open (l. to Murray) in Bangkok. The 22 year old finished the year a career-high World No. 39 and will look to continue his rise at the Australian Open.

Other names to watch out for in 2012 will be Bulgarian 20-year-old Grigor Dimitrov, who is still looking to transition his strong junior results to the professional tour; American teenager Ryan Harrison, who reached two ATP World Tour semi-finals this season; and German 21-year-old Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, who finished the year a career-high World No. 81 after winning the inaugural ATP Challenger Tour Finals in Sao Paulo (d. Sela).
