An interview with Jamie Murray

J. Murray Interview - 28 June
Saturday, 28 June 2008
MIRNYI‑MURRAY def. Cerretani‑Hansecu 6‑4, 6‑4, 7‑6

Q. Is that the first time you've both been to the second week at the same time?
JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, that was ‑‑ well, I guess we had only played it I guess once before at the same time. Yeah, it's good that we're both in the second week, and you know, hopefully we can keep winning and give the fans something to come and watch, you know, something to cheer for.

Q. How do you feel your partnership is developing with The Beast?
JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, it's been good on the grass so far. You know, we played in the semis at Queen's and so we've won two matches here.

It's going to get a lot tougher now, and I think if we keep working hard together on being more of a team as opposed to just sort of two players on the court, then we will see the results and things will get better for us.

Q. You must have felt, though, you were getting out there as a team today?
JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, the first two sets I think we played well. You know, we got the breaks, and I was returning much better than the first day.

You know, the third set I think I probably expected that we were going to get another break and started to get a bit agitated when it didn't happen.

But, you know, we played a good tiebreaker and we look forward to the next round.

Q. How does Max react when you're going through a rough patch like that and getting down on yourself?
JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, I think he was aware of it. I was aware of it myself, to be honest with you. I was starting to get a bit tired, which obviously didn't help when you start to get that frustrated, as well.

He realized he had to push me the last sort of 20 minutes of the match to get through it. But that comes from, you know, experience. You know, I'm sure he's been in that situation before, and, you know, he pushed me through and we got through in the tiebreaker.

Q. Heck of a tiebreaker, though.

JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah.

Q. Are you finding that's happening more and more, that as the partnership develops you're beginning to understand each other better as people and read when one of you is getting a bit down or a bit frustrated?

JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, I guess so. The more you play together the more you get to know each other's habits, what they like to do on the court, what's going to make them tick.

Today he needed to help me out a bit, and he did that. That's how we got through the first set.

Q. Somebody shouted, "Go McEnroe" from the crowd. I don't know if you heard that. Do you like the association with McEnroe and the headband and that?
JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, it's fine. It's just a bit of fun. No problems with that.

Q. Was the choice of color anything deliberate?
JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, I think so, yeah.

Q. It made it an interesting day for your grandparents. They sort of charged between the two courts following you both. You both seemed to be playing at the same time?
JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, both my matches were played at the same time as Andy. Yeah, that's the way it is. He was playing first and I think they were watching him. I didn't actually see my grandma in the crowd, but I saw my mum came sort of halfway through the third set.

Q. Your next round against the No. 2 seeds.
JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, I think, you know, they're the form team right now. They won Queen's. They were finals at the French. They won Hamburg, I think, and the finals of Rome. Or maybe the other way about.

So they're confident. They're playing well. We know it's going to be a tough match for us, but we're looking forward to it. We're feeling good about our game, and who knows what's going to happen.

An interview with Jamie Murray

J. Murray Interview - 30 June
Monday, 30 June 2008
Jamie Murray and Liezel Huber def. Dmitry Tursunov and Nadia Petrova 2‑6, 6‑2, 7‑9

Q. How was playing back to back doubles games for you?

JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, it was fine. I mean, the first one was pretty quick, to be honest, and didn't really take too much out of me. You know, I was keen to get back out on the court and try to play a bit better than I did this morning. It was good to get through.

Q. Is that something you've done before, played back to back ‑‑

JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, I did it last year a couple of times, but it was fine. It's grass, you know, the points aren't so long, and I played six sets today. It's not going to kill you, you know.

Q. What is the process between matches?

JAMIE MURRAY: Well, this time I didn't really have much, because I think we had maybe an hour and a quarter, and I finished and I was really disappointed the way I played this morning. I had to warm down a little bit, get a quick shower, a bite to eat and then just back on court.

So it was a quick turnaround, which is kind of good in a way because I think if you take too long in between, your body goes down and stiffens up and stuff, so it's better to get out there and get playing again.

Q. And it was a disappointment this morning?

JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, of course. We were obviously underdogs for the match, but I was very disappointed with the way the match meant. Those guys played very well and served very, very well, which made it difficult for us.

But I didn't play a great match at all, particularly on serve. I kind of let myself down a bit on serve throughout the match, and that's something to improve if you're going to try to get to the top of the game.

Q. They were No. 2 seeds; is that right? You must be reasonably happy that you ‑‑ that middle set was quite hard, wasn't it?

JAMIE MURRAY: Not really. I mean, we lost three sets to love, simple as that. It was a bit of a kicking.

You know, I'm sure we'll play them a lot of times in the future, and I'm sure we'll play better against them than we did today. They're a tough team, a very good team, and probably the No. 1 team in the world right now, to be honest with you, with their results over the last six weeks.

Q. Aside from the serve is there anything else you think you could have done to turn that round?

JAMIE MURRAY: It was tough. I mean, Zimonjic was serving huge. I mean, we hardly won a point on his serve the whole way through the match and Nestor has had a great serve all the way through his career, and today they were both firing.

It's tough especially on grass, tougher to return, and we didn't really have any chances at all until maybe even the last game where we had a couple of breakpoints, but we couldn't quite do it.

Q. And this afternoon with Liezel, that comes to be coming together?

JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, we played a good first ‑‑ really good first set, and then I completely stuffed up my service game out of nowhere really, and it was a battle from then because those two are very good singles players, which makes it tough. But we fought hard and fought hard, and we managed to get a pretty good serve right at the end, and then Liezel served out. So it was pleasing, very pleasing to get through.

Q. Do you know very much about Knowle and Chan you play next? Have you played them before or know much about them?

JAMIE MURRAY: I played Julian Knowle here last year actually in the mixed, maybe even in the same round. Yeah, I've played a few times in doubles. Yeah, it's a good draw.

I think ‑‑ you know, I think it was good for us to get through it. I would have been disappointed to go home tonight and be completely out of the tournament, and I've given ourselves another chance to come back fighting tomorrow and try and do the best we can and go as far as we can in the tournament.

Q. I read in a column this morning that you didn't think you'd win it again this year, the mixed doubles. Why is that?

JAMIE MURRAY: I didn't say I didn't think we'd win it, I just said I don't expect to win it again. I think that's completely different things. This year when I've played with Liezel, the two teams that have beaten us have won the tournament. We know that we're one of the better teams out there, and especially on grass. I think if we play well together then we've got a very good chance to go far in the tournament.

Q. Slightly away from the tennis, what happened with the hair?

JAMIE MURRAY: Who knows (laughter)? I was just ‑‑ I came home yesterday, and I was in the flat, and I've kind of been saying it for a few days that ‑‑ not necessarily I wanted to shave it, but I quite liked the idea of just shaving it because it's quite enjoyable to do it, and then I went for it and that was that. But it came out okay, I think.

Q. How long had you let it grow for?

JAMIE MURRAY: It was like 18 months, a long time.

Q. Is that a No. 3?

JAMIE MURRAY: No. 3, yeah, there you go.

Q. Jelena Jankovic said she might play mixed doubles with you after you got a haircut.

JAMIE MURRAY: Yeah, it's a bit late this time, but we'll see, maybe in the future.

Murrays Defeat Frenchmen, Meet Nestor/Zimonjic Next

Jamie MURRAY Murrays_toronto2

World No. 9 Andy Murray teamed up with brother Jamie Murray for a 7-6(4), 6-2 win over Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Nicolas Mahut in first round doubles action, Tuesday at the Rogers Masters in Toronto.

The Murray brothers, who will play for Great Britain at the Beijing Olympics, are making their ninth appearance together in ATP action and their first since last October at the BNP Paribas Masters. They achieved their best result in 2006 at Bangkok, where they finished as runners-up to Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram.

They next face a challenging second round match against No. 2 seeds and Stanford ATP Doubles Race leaders Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic, who are playing together for the first time since clinching the Wimbledon title. Nestor and Zimonjic have reached five consecutive finals.

Headed for Beijing
20 July, 2008 | 18:07

Jamie and Andy today spoke of their excitement following their selection for the GB Team at the Beijing Olympics.

Andy will play in the singles event with other top world players including Roger Federer and Wimbledon champion Rafa Nadal and in the doubles event with Jamie.

Andy said today: "It's a great honour to be selected to represent your country in the biggest sporting event in the world and to have the chance to team up with my brother makes it even more special and memorable.

Jamie added:"It's great news that both boys have got into the team for Beijing. The Olympics was always something that they watched on TV but now they are going to be part of it and that's going to be an unbelievable experience for them.

Judy Murray, who will be supporting her sons in China, said: "One of Andy's greatest memories is seeing Andre Agassi winning a gold medal in Atlanta in 1996 - and he was only nine years old then."

article provenant de "The Times"

Back in January at the Australian Open, Times Online studied the fortunes of Jamie Murray and declared that the Scottish doubles player and elder brother of the most emergent player in the game, who once declared he was living the dream, had begun to suffer a nightmare. In the ensuing four months things have got considerably worse.

Back then he was said to have lost his way. Now 23 year-old Murray seems to be desperately trying to find a new direction but stumbling at every turn. He has been dropped from Britain’s Davis Cup squad, his ranking has fallen from a spot in the low 20’s to a current position of 60th, and after a third successive first round exit from the French Open he can boast just one doubles victory on the main ATP World Tour since February.

So far this year he’s played with six different partners and the 6-3,6-2 exit alongside Pavel Vizner marked the end of his allegiance with 38-year-old Czech. As if to make things worse for Murray, regular mixed doubles partner Leizel Huber has deserted him for third ranked American Bob Bryan.
So what has happened to the player who seemed so bright and breezy this time last year and entranced the Wimbledon crowd with his on-court flirtations with Jelena Jankovic. Is he enjoying his tennis at all these days? “Not really right now,” came Murray's answer.

“It’s not much fun turning up at tournaments and losing on the Monday or the Tuesday which has happened a lot this year. It’s hard to keep turning up at tournaments, keep wanting to get that result to give you a springboard and then not getting it.”

Even spending a few minutes in the company of somebody who once seemed so enthusiastic uncovers a certain sense of desperation. His confidence seems at rock bottom, his optimism minimal. He now heads back to Britain hoping the grass court season rejuvenates his career and he intends to play at Queen’s Club, possibly Eastbourne and Wimbledon with the experienced Israeli Jonathan Erlich who is newly returned to the tour after a nine month absence enforced by an injured elbow.

Times are certainly testing right now and Murray is far from sure whether he is coming out the other side of an unhappy few months. “Who knows really?” he answers. "I have no idea. It’s not like I’ve won many matches and if anyone looks at the scoreline today it doesn’t really read too good. However I certainly played better today than I had done in the last couple of tournaments but we only got five games to show for it.

“It’s hard. It’s not like I enjoy going out there and losing most weeks. Especially if you feel like you’re putting in the hours to try and get better, and you feel pretty good on the practice court. Then you still go out there and don’t perform as well as you would like. It’s pretty frustrating, but I guess that’s sport sometimes. You have to just keep plodding away and hopefully it’ll turn around.”

What Murray desperately needs is match wins which equate into ranking points. Over the next few weeks he must defend 740 of them after last year reaching the final at the now downgraded Nottingham event, getting to the semi-final at Queen’s and Wimbledon’s third round. Should he fail on all counts he will find himself outside the world’s top 100 of doubles players, somewhere he hasn’t been since September 2006.

However, it is reasonable to assume there will be no longevity to this partnership either as once Erlich has recovered full fitness, he is certain to resume his long time allegiance with compatriot and Davis Cup team-mate Andy Ram.

If he could just emulate his rival for British Davis Cup spot Ross Hutchins; a regular partnership with a proven doubles player like Australian Stephen Huss plus the occasional outing with brother Andy. But right now such good fortune is not to be expected. Instead he faces a future back on the second tier Challenger circuit. “That’s the price you pay for not winning matches on the main tour,” he said.
As with anything in life, there are distinct dangers of being too self analytical but Murray has been discussing his situation with those closest. “Sometimes I speak to my mum and she’s like ‘Look, if this is what you want to do then you’ve got to work harder. You’ve got to do this, you’ve got to do that. You’re good enough. You’ve got to make it happen.’

“Then I’ll go out and I’ll practise and I’ll feel good about my game again and I’ll have a smile on my face. The next day you’ll come out and everything will feel bad, the world will feel like it’s going to end. It’s just frustrating. That’s hard.”

Some might say Murray is overdue a session with sports psychologist Robert Forzoni who taught brother Andy the benefits of positive thinking when he was struggling to recapture his confidence after missing the French Open and Wimbledon because of a wrist injury a couple of years ago. Jamie disagrees: “I don’t feel in my mind that I’m to the point where I feel I’m banging my head on a brick wall or anything, or that I have no idea what I’m doing.

“But 18 months ago I was so happy. I had direction and got my ranking up to the point where I could play on the tour. And then I started to play with Eric Butorac and we did so well straight away. Things were good.

“This year has been harder but it’s not like I don’t know how to play tennis any more. It’s just I’ve hit a bit of a rough patch. I’ve tried my best to pick it up but it’s hard sometimes to keep putting yourself out there are backing yourself to go out and play well when things aren’t happening for you.”
