German players have highs and lows

Mayer and Petzschner reach second round
German tennis fans saw plenty of action from local hopefuls on day two of the GERRY WEBER OPEN with a fair share of highs and lows. German Davis Cup member Philipp Petzschner reached the second round with a 6-2, 7-6(5) victory over Dominik Meffert in an all-German battle on Center Court. “You have to get used to playing on grass again. But I played pretty well,” said Petzschner, who was playing his first match on grass since winning the doubles title last year at Wimbledon alongside Jürgen Melzer. Meffert had moved into the tournament as a lucky loser following the withdrawal of 4 seed Mikhail Youzhny. “Of course it’s very bitter for the tournament that Roger Federer pulled out. On the other hand, it will be more exciting. More players from the second row – and I include myself among them – have a chance of advancing further,” said Petzschner optimistically.
The number 6 seed Florian Mayer also had to beat a fellow German on Center Court, holding on for a 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-3 victory over Dustin Brown to reach the second round. He will next take on Yen-Hsun Lu from Chinese Taipei. “I have a very difficult draw. Lu plays very good on grass,” said Mayer, who added that everyone in the field can beat everyone else. Andreas Seppi of Italy meanwhile ended the tournament for German Davis Cup player Tommy Haas, winning 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-2, for a major disappointment among the fans. “You can only practice so much. You need matches. Matches are most important for me – matches, matches, matches,” said Haas, who is working hard on his physical condition as he played his second tournament in singles since undergoing right hip and right elbow surgeries last year. Haas is looking forward to playing much better in the second half of the season.Seppi meanwhile will take on the winner between reigning champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia or lucky loser Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, who is replacing the injured Federer.

Weber vows to get another top star for future
07/06/2011
Tournament director Ralf Weber on Tuesday reiterated his regret over Roger Federer’s withdrawal but at the same time said he envisions a new orientation personnel-wise of the GERRY WEBER OPEN. “The withdrawal of Roger certainly was a shock. That came out of nowhere for us,” Weber told a press conference. “Everything was prepared for him from the private jet to the maid.”
Weber, who admits the tournament management is “totally powerless” in the case of a withdrawal, said he plans on discussing the matter personally with Federer at this month’s Wimbledon tournament. Still, the tournament wants to continue its relationship with Federer. “No player has done so much for our international reputation as Roger. He helped decisively in expanding the brand Gerry Weber Open,” said Weber.
The director also said he understands Federer wanting to concentrate on increasing his lead in all-time Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon. “We know that the Gerry Weber Open is not Wimbledon. And we have to accept that,” said Weber. But the tournament boss also has a responsibility to the disappointed loyal fans. And, in a show of good will, the organisers have announced that ticketholders from Tuesday (7 June) and Wednesday (8 June) will receive a 20 percent discount when purchasing tickets for the 2012 tournament. “I believe we owe our spectators this gesture, even though we are not obligated to do so,” said Weber.
Weber said he is committed to improving the personnel for next year’s Open – the 20th edition of the tournament. “I will very soon talk to other top players to bring them in for the 20th Gerry Weber Open. And that included Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic,” said Weber, who also spoke of a “tug-of-war” for the stars. Neither Nadal nor Djokovic have a long-term contract with the Wimbledon warm-up in Queens and both have played in Halle in the past.
Weber also announced he is planning a women’s invitational tournament for the next Gerry Weber Open. “With that we will be supporting the boom in German women’s tennis but also realising the wishes of many fans,” said the GWO boss. The women’s event would run in the middle of the week – parallel to the ATP event. Among the players will be the new stars of the German Fed Cup team – Andrea Petkovic, Julia Görges and Sabine Lisicki – as well as other international top players.

Finale 100% allemande à Halle
Samedi 11 juin 2011 - 20:01
