Wimbledon La 3D s'invite au All England Club

Qui a dit que Wimbledon n'était pas moderne ? Les organisateurs du tournoi britannique du Grand Chelem ont en effet décidé d'accorder la diffusion des demi-finales du tableau masculin ainsi que des deux finales en 3D. Un partenariat d'un an a été passé avec Sony, reconductible si l'opération s'avère être un succès. Le directeur du tournoi, Ian Ritchie, a ainsi déclaré sur le site officiel du tournoi que "Wimbledon est reconnu pour son héritage et son sens de la tradition. Dans le même temps, nous sommes toujours à la recherche d'amélioration pour le tournoi, en mélangeant avec succès cette tradition et l'innovation". Pour mémoire, la quinzaine sur le gazon londonien aura lieu du 20 juin au 3 juillet prochain.

Wimbledon Increases Prize Money

The Wimbledon singles champions will each receive a record £1.1million at the 2011 Championships. The All England Club have increased the winners' pot by £100,000 on last year, with the total prize fund up by 6.4% to £14.6million.

Philip Brook, chairman of the All England Club and the The Championships, said: "Leading international sports events such as Wimbledon are all about the quality of the players on show. In the competitive world of top-level sport, it is important we offer prize money which suitably rewards the players for the box-office appeal they bring to the event and for their supreme performances on court."

Wimbledon will unveil the new number three and number four courts this year, which will increase the overall capacity by 1,000 to 38,500.

Court Three, which will have capacity for 2,000 spectators, will become the fourth court on the complex to be equipped with Hawkeye technology.

To celebrate the 125th championships, Wimbledon have arranged for the Antiques Roadshow to record an episode at the All England Club in August.

Blue Peter will also record a special to be broadcast on the second Monday of the championships, and the All England Club have commissioned four 30-minute documentaries charting the history of Wimbledon.

Ward, Smethurst, Murray & Stephenson win wild cards

Alex Ward, Dan Smethurst, Samantha Murray and Francesca Stephenson have won through the LTA Wimbledon wild card playoffs.

The four of them will now line up in Wimbledon qualifying which takes place at the Bank of England sports ground, Roehampton, next week.

Alex Ward beat David Rice 7-6(2), 6-2 in his final match, whilst Dan Smethurst defeated Morgan Phillips 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

In the women’s event Sam Murray defeated 16 year old Katy Dunne in straight sets, 7-6(1), 6-3, whilst Fran Stephenson upset second seed Jade Windley, also in two sets, winning 6-2, 6-2.

The four players will receive wild cards into Wimbledon qualifying to join the other players who have made it into the qualifying draw based on their ranking.

Seeds fall on opening day of men’s qualifying

No.1 seed Lukas Rosol was one of a host of seeds to fall as qualifying for The Championships got under way at the Bank of England Club in Roehampton on Monday.

Rosol lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to Belgium's David Goffin, opening up his section of the draw to six players ranked outside the top 150 in the world. The Czech world no.89 lost his focus after going a set up on Goffin, and unlike on his favoured clay, the match can turn quickly on grass and Rosol was out the tournament before it had barely begun. Goffin meanwhile possesses more of an all-court game than the Czech, to whom he conceded over a foot in height. At 5'4", he is the smallest player on the ATP tour but he managed to dismantle his lofty opponent by keeping his unforced errors to a minimum.

Dustin Brown (pictured), complete with fluorescent orange and yellow laces to his shoes, also went out. The no.7 seed was tormented all afternoon by Grega Zemlja, who qualified for the Australian Open earlier in the year and pushed the flamboyant Marcos Baghdatis to five sets once in the main draw. After dropping the first set, Germany's Brown rallied back to take the second and had three break points early in the third and again at 3-4. Slovenian Davis Cup player Zemlja focused on Brown's backhand however and served big at the right times. He then began making inroads into the German's service game with precise, aggressive counter-attacks, picking Brown off when he came in to the net. With the benefit of serving first and always holding, he made the pressure tell on Brown, who lost the final set in the 14th game to give Zemlja a well-earned 6-4, 3-6, 8-6 victory.

On a day when world no.4 Andy Murray took the title at Queen's, the Britons in the qualifying draw also fared well. Oliver Golding beat Josh Milton, routing his fellow countryman 6-3, 6-2, while Liam Broady won a titanic struggle 12-10 in the third over Italy's Alessio Di Mauro, ranked no fewer than 692 places above him at no.153 in the world. "The key was my serve and return today, both those shots worked for me," said the 2010 boys' doubles champion.

Jamie Baker defeated George Morgan in another British derby, but Alex Ward and Alex Bogdanovic came up short, the former falling in three tight sets to up-and-coming American Ryan Harrison and latter losing to Germany's Bastian Knittel.

British ladies struggle on opening day

Melanie South (pictured) flew the flag for Great Britain with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Liana Ungur, but her five compatriots in the ladies' singles draw all fell at the first hurdle on the second day of qualifying.

Wild card South, who lives a stone's throw away from the Bank of England Sports Centre in New Malden, Surrey, looked at home on the grass from the start and was not in the least troubled by her opponent who, at No.168 in the world, sits 125 spots above her in the rankings. It was perhaps not surprising. Just five years ago, the Kingston-born Brit defeated Italian Francesca Schiavone at Wimbledon and once again she displayed her magic, albeit on different lawns.

The match attracted the crowds and was a tightly-contested affair until South broke for a 4-3 lead, at which point Ungur receiving treatment and emerged with industrial-strength strapping taped around her entire left thigh. The interruption did little to dent South's concentration as she promptly held serve, took the set two games later and repeated the 6-4 score-line in the second.

Her five fellow countrywomen fared less well however. Samantha Murray, Tara Moore, Francesca Stephenson, Anna Fitzpatrick, and Jade Windley all went out of the tournament in straight sets, winning a mere 16 games between them.

The biggest upset of the day came when No.2 seed Chan Yung-Jan crashed out of the tournament to Marina Erakovic. The former world No.50 had no answer to the New Zealander's game and was demolished 6-2, 6-1. No.21 seed Urszula Radwanska, the less-heralded sister of Agnieszka, fell 4-6, 3-6 at the hands of Aleksandra Wozniak, who stood at no.21 in the world this time two years ago. Iryna Bremond, Czech Renata Voracova (No.11) and Mandy Minella (No.22) were all dealt first round blows.

It was a different story for top seed Nuria Llagostera Vives, who saw off Germany's Tatjana Malek 6-3, 6-3. Third seed Arantxa Rus, who made a name for herself at the French Open where she ousted No.2 seed Kim Clijsters in the second round, looked in devastating form as she found her feet on the turf to defeat France's Olivia Sanchez 6-4, 6-4.

Caroline Garcia, another player to generate headlines in Paris when she pushed Maria Sharapova to three sets on the Roland Garros clay, also demonstrated great form during her 6-0, 7-6(6) victory over Sally Peers leaving spectators in no doubt that she is definitely one to watch in the future.

Tough matches as men's qualifiers continue

Once the ladies matches had been completed for the day, the men returned to action, treating the spectators at the Bank of England Sports Centre in Roehampton to some ferocious high-stakes tennis as they vied for one of the 32 spots in the third and final round of qualifiers for The Championships, 2011.

Among the stand-out performers today were Italy's Simone Bolelli, who looked a class act during his 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Germany's Simon Stadler, and young American Ryan Harrison, who scored a convincing 6-3, 6-3 victory over Laurent Rochette.

A late start for Bernard Tomic on Court 14 did not hamper the ebullient Australian youngster as he raced to victory against Robert Farah 6-1, 6-4 in what was probably the best all-round performance today by an unseeded player. Tomic effortlessly dismantled his opponent's game on a day that Farah will try to quickly forget.

Tomas Schoorel from The Netherlands went out in a battle of the giants to another Aussie, Chris Guccione, falling 7-6(5), 6-2 after his game came apart when the umpire over-ruled a call in the first set tie-break, taking the score to 5-2 in the Australian's favour rather than 4-3. Schoorel lost his cool and the tie-break, and an early break in the second set which was enough to derail the fourth seed and send him home earlier than expected.

Oliver Golding (pictured) was outmuscled by Jerzy Janowicz 7-6(3), 6-1, who made life a misery for the British teenager all afternoon as he grew in confidence after a tough first set. Spain's Roberto Bautista-Agut meanwhile brought an end to Liam Broady's hopes, conceding just three games in the process.

Ireland's Conor Niland produced one of the fight-backs of the day against Australian Greg Jones, winning 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, and will look forward to his day of rest tomorrow as he recovers from six sets (and 63 games to be precise) of competitive tennis over the past two days. The same applied to Ruben Bemelmans, who came out on top 3-6, 6-4, 16-14 against Japan's Yuichi Sugita.

The full list of the 32 men in the final round can be viewed in the draws section. All matches will be decided in five sets and will be contested on Thursday.

Seedings announced for The Championships, 2011

The All England Club today announced the seedings for The Championships, 2011. Please note that the following guidelines are used to calculate the seedings.

MEN
The seeds are the top 32 players on the ATP Entry System Position (ESP), BUT then rearranged on a surface-based system. Since 2002 a seeding committee has not been required for the Gentlemen's Singles following an agreement made with the ATP. The seeding order is determined using an objective and transparent system to reflect more accurately an individual player's grass court achievements: The formula is:

Take ESP points at 13 June 2011
Add 100% points earned for all grass court tournaments in the past 12 months
Add 75% points earned for the best grass court tournament in the 12 months before that.

LADIES
The seeding order follows the WTA ranking list, except where in the opinion of the Committee, a change is necessary to produce a balanced draw.
The only changes this year are Serena Williams and Venus Williams moving to 8 and 24 respectively. This reflects the balance between their proven records and also their lack of competitive play in the past 12 months.

Kim Clijsters, toujours blessée à la cheville droite, déclare forfait pour Wimbledon, qui débute lundi. «Je suis très très déçue de me retirer après m'être de nouveau fait mal à 's-Hertogenbosch. Je suis frustrée que ça m'arrive maintenant, juste avant l'un de mes tournois favoris. J'ai toujours aimé baigner dans l'ambiance de Wimbledon mais je n'ai pas d'autre choix que de me reposer, me soigner et ne pas jouer au tennis pendant quelques semaines» a expliqué la Belge dans un communiqué.

Sam Querrey and Benjamin Becker have also withdrawn from the men's with elbow injuries. Cue fevered calculations tomorrow at the final day of qualifying for the lucky loser spots.

Tsonga et S. Williams bien vus

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga et Serena Williams ont été favorisés par les organisateurs du tournoi de Wimbledon. Le Manceau, récent finaliste du Queen's, se retrouve tête de série numéro 12 alors que l'Américaine est 8e. Richard Gasquet, seulement 17e, a été moins gâté...

Tableau messieurs : Tsonga heureux gagnant
Son récent résultat au Queen's a pesé dans la balance. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, finaliste malheureux du tournoi londonien, est la tête de série numéro 12 de Wimbledon. Une belle "promotion" pour le Manceau, qui est 19e mondial. Richard Gasquet a eu moins la cote. Treizième joueur mondial, le Biterrois se retrouve tête de série 17, juste devant Michael Llodra (19). Gaël Monfils (9) et Gilles Simon (15) n'ont pas à se plaindre. Il y aura donc cinq Français parmi les joueurs protégés. Pour les premières places, il n'y a pas de surprises. Les organisateurs de la troisième levée du Grand Chelem, qui s'octroient ces libertés, ont décidé de respecter le classement de l’ATP. Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer sont ainsi 1, 2 et 3. Juste devant Andy Murray, le quatrième mondial, et sur qui tout le Royaume compte.

Chez les dames, Serena Williams, tenante du titre, a, comme prévu, été "avantagée" par les organisateurs du tournoi de Wimbledon. Elle est classée tête de série numéro 8 alors qu'elle ne pointe qu'au 26e rang mondial. Si l'Américaine vient de signer son retour sur le circuit après plusieurs mois sans activité, elle est tenante du titre et a été la reine de Wimbledon a quatre reprises. Sa soeur Venus, 33e mondiale, s'en sort bien aussi mais s'il a été moins avantagée. Elle est tête de série 24. Pour le reste, la logique a été respectée. Marion Bartoli est ainsi 10e. Elle est la seule Française protégée.

Seeds tumble at Roehampton

Top seed Nuria Llagostera Vives was the biggest casualty of the second day of ladies' qualifying when she was defeated in straight sets by Slovakia's Zuzana Kucova 6-4, 6-4. The Spaniard struggled to find her rhythm against her 28-year-old opponent in blustery conditions that grew progressively worse throughout the day.

Arantxa Rus, the 5'11" 20-year-old who beat No.2 seed Kim Clijsters at the French Open last month, followed Llagostera Vives' path out the draw with a surprise 6-7(1), 7-6 (3), 6-4 defeat at the hands of veteran American Lindsay Lee-Waters.

The nail-biting contest saw No.3 seed Rus recover from a break of service late in the opening set to force a tie-break which she then polished off with ease. The roles were reversed in the second and Lee-Waters dominated much of the set. Rus dug deep, clawing her way back to force another tie-break but it was not enough and the set went the way of the 33-year-old.

Buoyed by this comeback, the adventurous American began mixing up her game in the third, sprinkling in magical drop shop shots which caught her Dutch opponent off guard. The strategy paid off and now just one place stands between Lee-Waters and a place in the main draw.

Other seeds to fall at the second round stage included Romania's Edina Gallovits-Hall (No.6), Maria Elena Camerin (No.7) and Carla Suarez Navarro (No.. Meanwhile, Italy's Camila Giorgi fought back from a set down to claim the scalp of Austrian No.16 seed Yvonne Meusburger 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. The 19-year-old is bidding to make her Grand Slam debut.

Elsewhere, No.5 seed Tamarine Tanasugarn, who turned 34-years old last month, became the oldest women left in the draw following her swift 6-4, 6-1 defeat of Regina Kulikova. America's Irina Falconi did not hang around in her match either. For the second day running the No.4 seed enjoyed a comfortable victory and this time breezed past Romanian Elena Bogdan 6-2, 6-2. Falconi has only dropped seven games so far this tournament.

The Wimbledon hopes of Melanie South, the only remaining Briton in the ladies' singles, were crushed by Misaki Doi who pocketed the match 7-5, 6-3. "It was a little bit difficult and windy," said the Japanese No.17 seed after the match. "My game was not so good, but not so bad. There's still room for improvement."

Veteran French player Stephanie Foretz-Gacon, who made the second round of the main draw in 2004 and 2005, overcame Ukraine's Mariya Koryttseva 8-6 in a tight final set, but fellow countrywoman Caroline Garcia, who was a mere eight points from ousting Maria Sharapova from Roland Garros this year when she lead by a set and 4-1, was thrashed by Alexa Glatch. The 21-year-old American was on sparkling form, dispatching her teenage opponent for the loss of only one game.

Lucky losers on red alert
The withdrawal of Kim Clijsters after she aggravated her ankle injury at 's-Hertogenbosch meant that 2010 semi-finalist Tsvetana Pironkova moved up into the top 32 and thus is one of the seeds.

In the men's draw, Sam Querrey and Benjamin Becker have been forced to withdraw, each of them suffering from elbow injuries. Their places in the main draw will be taken by lucky losers, i.e. the highest-ranked players from those defeated in the final round of qualifying. Lukasz Kubot and Flavio Cipolla, seeded No.2 and No.9 respectively, stand to benefit should they lose on Thursday, but they would obviously prefer the ranking points, prize money and of course confidence that goes with a third-round win in qualifying.

Pippa watches practice
The courts were a hive of activity on Wednesday, with dozens of players on site to practice ahead of The Championships. Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal had a hit at various times during the day, with Maria Sharapova also on Court 14 early in the morning.
Thomaz Bellucci and Ivo Karlovic were spotted over lunchtime, while Court 7 saw a Swiss derby, albeit a very relaxed one. Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka had a leisurely knock-up at 1 pm, with former Federer and current Wawrinka coach Peter Lundgren officiating. Up on the clubhouse balcony, avid tennis fan Pippa Middleton watched the proceedings along with Jane Henman, mother of Tim who took part in Junior Wimbledon as a youngster.

Vera ends Serena's comeback
After playing - and winning - her first match in 49 weeks at Eastbourne on Tuesday against the above-mentioned Tsvetana Pironkova, Serena Williams was halted on her comeback trail against the woman she defeated in last year's Wimbledon final. Vera Zvonareva, who will be No.2 seed at The Championships after the withdrawal of Kim Clijsters, came from behind to win 3-6, 7-6(5), 7-5 in an epic match which lasted over three hours.
Though Serena will be disappointed to have lost, the fact that she was given such a thorough test of her capabilities can only stand her in good stead for next week, where she will be now seeded No.7.

Le tirage des Français

Le tirage au sort de Wimbledon a été effectué vendredi matin.

Hormis l’improbable remake entre John Isner et Nicolas Mahut, les autres Français ont été plutôt épargnés par le tirage au sort de Wimbledon. Gasquet débutera contre Giraldo, Simon et Tsonga face à des qualifiés. Monfils entamera sa quinzaine face à l’Allemand Bachinger. Paire doit s’attendre à souffrir contre David Ferrer.

Wimbledon: Nadal avec Murray, Federer avec Djokovic et Mahut retrouve...Isner

Rafael Nadal est tombé dans la moitié de tableau d'Andy Murray et Roger Federer dans celle de Novak Djokovic vendredi lors du tirage au sort de Wimbledon, qui commence lundi.

Au premier tour, Nadal, tenant du titre, sera opposé à l'Américain Michael Russell, 91e mondial, Murray à l'Espagnol Daniel Gimeno Traver (56e), Federer au Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin (60e) et Djokovic au Français Jérémy Chardy (52e).

Le Français Nicolas Mahut retrouvera lui dès le premier tour l'Américain John Isner, avec lequel il avait disputé le match le plus long de l'histoire, 11 heures 05 minutes, l'an passé.

La rencontre, disputée sur trois jours, s'était terminée sur le score de 70 jeux à 68 au cinquième set en faveur d'Isner.

Les deux hommes n'avaient qu'une chance sur 127 de tomber l'un contre l'autre lors du tirage au sort effectué vendredi à Wimbledon.

Mahut et Isner ne se sont plus affrontés depuis le match historique de l'année dernière.

Le tirage au sort de Wimbledon a fait un clin d'oeil incroyable à l'histoire en plaçant Isner et Mahut face à face dès le premier tour, un an après leur épique rendez-vous de trois jours conclu 70-68. Tirage difficile pour Jérémy Chardy, opposé d'entrée à Novak Djokovic, et Paire face à Ferrer.

Wimbledon en redemande. Après un combat épique livré l'an passé sur le court N.18 entre deux hommes qui ont marqué l'histoire des Internationaux de Grande-Bretagne, et même du tennis, le fameux Isner-Mahut sera rejoué dès le 1er tour. Ne pensez pas qu'il y a là une entourloupe de la part des organisateurs : le hasardeux match a été désigné, comme tous les autres, de façon manuellement et non électroniquement comme à Roland-Garros. Dans un sac de velour vert, donc complètement opaque, le tirage a été effectué sous l'égide de Ian Ritchie, directeur du tournoi, et Andrew Jarrett, juge arbitre à Wimbledon. Il y avait moins d'1% de chance de réussir cet exploit. Ils l'ont pourtant fait.
