Q. After all the injuries and all the heartache that you've had for the last few years, did you always believe that this could happen even if I was 32 years old?
RAINER SCHUETTLER: I mean, I guess if I wouldn't believe in it, I wouldn't still play. But you never know. I was lucky against Blake a little bit. I played great in the first, second and third rounds so far. So yeah, of course I'm very happy right now.

Q. Was there ever a point at which you thought maybe I should just find another career?
RAINER SCHUETTLER: Yeah, a couple of times, obviously. I didn't know after the mononucleosis I had if I would still be able to play, and it took a little while, and this is my calendar always started early, and because I'm so desperate to play and I don't give myself time to recover.

So yeah, there were two, three times when I really thought, maybe it doesn't make sense, maybe I should look for something else. But at the end, I do what I love, what I enjoy, and that's the most important.

I said the last time, if I I mean, sometimes I stop for two, three days, and I think, should I continue or not. And then I just want to go on the tennis court and I just want to practice, and I still enjoy it. That's why I'm still playing.

Q. What was the lowest point in all this?
RAINER SCHUETTLER: I don't know. The good thing is I forget pretty quickly, so I don't know.

Q. What are you doing now that you haven't been able to do in the last several years?
RAINER SCHUETTLER: First, since last September I feel healthy again. I don't have any injuries. I can play, and I feel my strokes a little better. So I came back from 150, I think last August or September, I came back at the end of the year top hundred. I played well. And then this year just from February to May, I didn't play well the clay court season and the hard court season I had some tough losses, and I thought I was playing much better.

And of course at some point, it's always in life, sometimes you struggle but then you come back, and now I just won three matches, and for me it's like I felt like I played tennis like this for quite a while, and just people don't realize because you lose in three sets and you don't have the success you had before. And for me it's not a surprise because I thought from last September I played much better, and at some point I thought I was going to win some matches.

Q. So much of your game depends on how quick you can be around the court. Do you feel as quick now as you ever were?
RAINER SCHUETTLER: Yeah, I feel pretty fit. After Paris I was really upset because I didn't have a good performance there against Blake in the first round, and physically and mentally I didn't feel very good. And then I started to practice really hard for four weeks, basically just physical, and I didn't really care, also, in Halle it sounds a little bit strange, but I didn't really care if I win or not, but my goal was to play well in the long run and to get really fit again.

I played well in Halle, played even better in Hertogenbosch and now I feel pretty good here. So in the end it's just three matches, so it's not such a big change.

Q. The older players here, Jonas, Tommy Johansson, Ivan Ljubicic, have they been happy to see you performing like this?
RAINER SCHUETTLER: I was really surprised because after my match against Blake, from all the players, from coaches, I a lot of people came to me and said, hey, we're really happy, and you always worked hard and you deserve it, so of course it makes me really happy that people see it and respect that I'm working hard and respect how I play tennis.

Q. And I'll ask you again, the German victory in the semifinals, how much did it inspire you?
RAINER SCHUETTLER: Yeah, I hope they inspire me in the finals, too, and then Monday I'm going to win one more round.

Q. What correspondence, if any, have you had or the other German players had with the football team?
RAINER SCHUETTLER: I mean, I you mean if I talked to some players?

Q. Or email or whatever.
RAINER SCHUETTLER: For me, I know some players, but it's I mean, I know how it is. I don't want to bother them, and it's like they don't want to bother me. Whenever we have free time, I mean, I stay in touch.

Klose always comes to the Davis Cup and gets treatment, but I met a few times in Klaus Ader's rehab center, and he's the physio of the Davis Cup team, too. So it's not that we are constantly in touch.

Like I have a very good friend, Ivan Klasnic, the Croatian guy. But it's more like when we have free time and we can relax, then I stay in touch. But I wouldn't bother him when he plays a tournament and they wouldn't bother me.

Q. And here at Wimbledon, to what do you attribute the great success that the Germans have had here this year?
RAINER SCHUETTLER: I think in general the grass suits the German players much better. I mean, clay court was not always the favorite, not of Nicolas, not of Tommy, not of Boris and not of Michael Stich, as well. I think the hard court or grass court suits the German game much better, or most of them.

Rainer Schuettler s'est qualifié pour les quarts de finale du tournoi de Wimbledon en battant Janko Tipsarevic, lundi, en quatre sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6). Au prochain tour, l'Allemand sera opposé au vainqueur de la rencontre qui oppose actuellement Arnaud Clément à Marin Cilic.

THE MODERATOR: Questions.

Q. Just an explanation why you are back. You are now in quarterfinals of Wimbledon.

RAINER SCHUETTLER: Because I'm healthy. Because I enjoy playing tennis. Because I work hard. So probably at some point I had to come back because I was always trying to work hard, trying to stay fit. I had a lot of injuries, as I said before.

Now for a couple of months I am fit again. I have no problems. At some point I knew that, yeah, it has to come that I have to play good again.

Q. I remember when you reached the finals of the Australian Open, you explained you were working many hours a day. Perhaps this was one of the reasons of the injuries afterwards, that you did too much?

RAINER SCHUETTLER: No, I don't think so. I mean, for 10 years in my career I had nothing. I think I sprained my ankle once but that's it, so I had no injuries at all. And at some point it has to come.

I mean, I'm not the youngest any more. I was a little bit unlucky with mononucleosis. So it took a long time and I started too early. So I didn't give my body enough time to rest probably. I had knee surgery.

But that's in me. I don't want to just be at home and do rehab. Yeah, I get bored. So it's maybe a little bit bad for my tennis sometimes, but that's how I am.

Maybe now I would make some different decisions, but at that time I made them. Now I'm just happy to be, yeah, back and playing good tennis.

Q. How important is today's victory for you?

RAINER SCHUETTLER: Very important, of course. I've never been in the last eight here before. I said after the third round I won, I said, I'm so happy I don't have to go to Cordoba to play challenger, because that was my schedule this week actually.

Now I said I just want to make the last eight club, because for me at least it would be nice at some point in my life to come back and have the opportunity to go in the players' lounge and see the young players and to watch how they play.

So definitely I made it in Australia and now I made it here, so I'm very happy about it.

Rainer Schuettler (battu par Rafael Nadal) : «Je n'étais pas sur le court dans les 10 ou 15 premières minutes. Mais après, ça s'est resserré. J'ai eu une chance de gagner la deuxième manche. Mais Nadal est difficile à battre. C'est pour ça qu'il est numéro 2. Mais c'est OK, je suis content de mon tournoi. Bien sûr le match d'hier (ndlr : son quart de finale contre Clément, achevé en 5 sets) a eu un effet. Mais je suis en forme. Mes jambes étaient un peu fatiguées, je n'ai pas beaucoup dormi après le match et devant la perspective de jouer Rafa. Mais il était clairement meilleur. Je travaille très dur. Sur gazon, j'ai changé mon entraînement, avec des sessions plus longues. Physiquement je suis de nouveau en forme. Ma victoire sur Blake (n°9, au deuxième tour) m'a ramené la confiance. Quand il y a le physique et la confiance, on gagne des matches. J'espère que ce sera une grande finale. J'aimerais que Federer gagne un 6e Wimbledon de rang. On est amis et on s'est entraîné ensemble cette année. Mais Rafa le mériterait aussi.»

Q. How are you feeling after another long day on court?

RAINER SCHUETTLER: I don't know. I'm a little bit disappointed about the start of the match, the first set, because it was -- I mean, he started so well, to play so well.

I was not on court for the first 10, 15 minutes, so I'm of course a little bit disappointed about the start. Otherwise then at least it was a close match. I had chances to win the second set 5-4 serving. But it's okay. I mean, that's why he's No. 2 in the world. He's so difficult to beat. But it's okay. I mean, I had an unbelievable tournament, and I knew that it's going to be difficult today.

Q. Were you worried after 6-1 in the first set it was going to be all over in an hour?

RAINER SCHUETTLER: I was trying hard that it was not over. But, I mean, I don't know if he missed one ball or not. Just it was left and right and I didn't know what to do. I started to serve also better and I was more aggressive and I got used to his speed and the spin of the ball, and then I felt much more comfortable in the second and third set.

Q. A five-hour match the day before isn't exactly the ideal preparation for a match against Rafael Nadal. How do you think the match yesterday influenced today's match?

RAINER SCHUETTLER: I mean, of course it influenced it a little bit. I mean, I'm working also physically hard so I'm fit. But now I feel -- after I woke up my legs were a little bit tired. It's normal. I didn't sleep so much because there was the match going on in your mind. Then, of course, the next day you play Rafa and you want to do well. I didn't sleep for too long. Anyways, was a great experience to go on Centre Court to play Rafa. Yeah, he just was better today.

Q. What do you put your success down to in this tournament?

RAINER SCHUETTLER: As I said, I'm working really hard. I know on grass court especially we change practice a little bit, especially for Wimbledon. We are practicing longer sessions. Yeah, I'm just working hard, and physically I'm fit again. So when the physical part is right, then the mental part comes as well. And I was lucky that I won a tough five-setter against Blake and then the confidence came back. Yes, so sometimes it happens in one or two matches.

Q. How do you see the final going on Sunday?

RAINER SCHUETTLER: I mean, I don't know. Both playing extremely well. For me it's amazing how easy Roger makes it always look. I mean, I practiced with him here. He just seems that he's not even trying. And Rafa is the opposite. He's like so pumped and always there. Yeah, I don't know. I hope it will be a great final. I would like Roger to make the six in a row. We are friends, so it would be really nice. Rafa also, the way he played, would deserve it. For me, whoever wins will be a great champion.

Q. You say you've been practicing with Roger this week. Are you going to be hitting with him for the preparation on Sunday?

RAINER SCHUETTLER: No, I said I practiced with him during the week.

L'Allemand n'a eu aucun mal à s'imposer contre son compatriote Simon Greul (6-4, 6-2) et affrontera le qualifié Bjorn Phau en quarts de finale. Tombeur de l'Israélien David Sela en deux sets disputés (7-6 6-4), Tipsarevic sera opposé au vainqueur de la rencontre entre Mario Cilic et Denis Istomin.

Rainer Schuettler s'est complètement effondré en demi-finales à s’Hertogenbosch.

Alors qu’il servait pour le match à 6/3 5/4, Rainer Schuettler s’est écroulé de façon inexplicable. L’Allemand, totalement démobilisé, s’inclinait quelques minutes plus tard face à son compatriote Benjamin Becker (3/6 7/5 6/1), qualifié pour la finale après être passé par les qualifications !
