Bopanna visits Pakistan in a bid to re-establish sporting relations between India and Pakistan 16-Dec-2011 07:47
Rohan Bopanna visited Pakistan to attend ex doubles partner Aisam Ul Haq Quereshi's wedding.India's Rohan Bopanna visited Pakistan recently to attend friend Aisam Ul Haq Quereshi's wedding and to promote tennis ties between the two neighbors where cricket has dominated almost everything. “ It's nice to be in Pakistan and I hope we resume tennis between the two countries which in turn would increase interest in the sport in both the countries,” Bopanna said after a practice session.
Sports between these two countries took a U turn after the 26/11 attack on Mumbai. With their claim to fame being the US Open Finals last year parted ways last month after competing at the Year Ending Masters. Bopanna took this decision as he wanted to qualify for the London Olympics next year and to do so he needed an Indian partner.
When asked about his relations with Qureshi after the split, Bopanna replied “We are good friends and will remain good friends. I am here to attend his wedding and am very happy at that.” The “Indo-Pak express” has actively been participating to resolve the India-Pakistan issues and also volunteered to play an exhibition match on the border.
Bopanna termed this match as a “peace match” but said that permission for such a match is still in queue. “We offered to play a match at the Wagah border and wrote letters to both governments, but we still await clearance.”
Lets hope that their efforts don't go down the drain and something nice crops up between the two Asian neighbors.
