Kamke moves toward second round due to Reister's injury
06/06/2011
A shoulder injury forced Julian Reister to quit his first round match at the 19th GERRY WEBER OPEN. His good friend, training partner and opponent at today's match Tobias Kamke moves due to this reason toward to the second round at GWO. Reister felt bothered by the shoulder problem since the practice before the match: "my shoulder started to hurt right from the beginning of the game, I practice a lot for this tournament, I am quite disappointed."
Kamke's thoughts are with his buddy Julian Reister. "After the match I went to him to see what happened." He ist now looking forward to reach the third round at the GWO for the first time in his career. He will have to face either 8th seed Milos Raonic (Canada) or Pablo Andujar (Spain). "I always feel good playing on this surface and I hope that I'll stay longer in the tournament" said Kamke, the first German player to move into the last 16 at the GWO.

Interview with Tobias Kamke after his win over Julian Reister
06/06/2011
Question: Is it possible to be happy about such a victory? Especially if it’s against your best tennis mate? Kamke: Well, if it had been a proper match I think I would have been happy, I think we are both professional enough to see it as a “normal” match, but it’s difficult to be happy about a victory which happened due to your friends’ retirement. But of course I’m really happy to be able to play another round here, at least one. Well, but I take my reaching the next round as it is and I’m looking forward to the next match. But you can’t really be happy about someone’s retirement.
Q: Have you spoken to him yet after the match concerning his injury? Kamke: Yes, I went to see him in the locker room, I asked him there because I didn’t want to interfere during the match. It could have been that he would continue to play, therefore I wanted to keep concentrating on myself. He had problems with his shoulder three, four weeks ago, he cancelled his tournament and got treatment in Hamburg. He told me that it started to hurt again during warm-up, then it got worse during the serves. He will have an appointment with the physiotherapist soon. I think he doesn’t know yet if he will stay here for the treatment or if he goes home to get it done there. He wasn’t sure about that just now.
Q: What are your expectations for the grass season in general, it being a short season? Kamke: It’s short, yes. I actually always look forward to the grass season, also because it is short and so far I liked playing on grass, and I was relatively successful last year in Wimbledon. It will be different there, for sure, you have to be there 100 % all the time, that’s for sure. I hope to be able to win at least one or two rounds here. Next week I will have another tournament in Eastbourne, before Wimbledon will start. I actually want to confirm my achievement from last year, maybe even get better. It depends how the draw will go for me. You don’t have much influence on that in Wimbledon. But I’m looking forward to it and I have a lot of fun playing on grass.
Q: The next round might be against Raonic. Kamke: Yes, he plays tomorrow, I think.
Q: That would be a real blast, wouldn’t it? Kamke: Yes, he plays an outstanding season, especially this year. I think he made 1300 of his 1600 points this year. I played him last year once at a challenger in Canada. It was pretty exciting to return his serves. I think, that will be even more exciting on grass, in case he wins tomorrow. But I will watch him play tomorrow with my trainer and then we will prepare ourselves for the match.

Interview with Tobias Kamke

Question: There is not much you can do against such serves, right? Kamke: Yes, not really. I had a wee chance during his service games. Then I had a set point, therefore it’s really annoying that I didn’t make it. But even then he got the first serve in, with about 200 km/h. It’s even more difficult on clay than on other surfaces to return that. I think he deserved to win. He served better than me during the whole match, then he made a break in the second set. Of course he also played a really good first set, a good tie-break, so he deserved to win.
Q: Apart from him, how do you view your performance today? Kamke: Well, I’m actually quite satisfied. I more or less knew what to expect. I thought I would be able to return better, but as he had a high percentage of first serves it was really difficult for me to return any balls at all. I don’t know how many aces he hit, but I think he got a few. It was just really difficult to get a chance during his serves. That increased the pressure on my service games, because I knew I had to get them through. The only chance for a break was at 6:5, I had none at all in the second set. But apart from a short black out where I made two unforced errors, I’m pretty satisfied with my performance.
Q: How frustrating is it, if your performance was good and you lost nevertheless? Kamke: I’m pretty much frustrated at the moment, because I was hoping for more due to my performance during practice. But then again, you can only play as good as the opponent allows you to play. Apart from 6:5 he didn’t allow for anything. I was miles away to get a break in, just the one time. Of course I’m annoyed by that, because I would have loved to play more matches and I was actually satisfied with my performance. But he served too well today and deserved to win.
Q: You won against him last year in Canada, that was so far the only time you met before today. What was the difference? Kamke: I think the main difference was that he is a top 30 player now, he really developed his game and his personality as well. I follow that a bit, because I think it’s interesting. Last year after the finals I said that I wouldn’t be surprised to go to Australia next year and see him as a seeded player there. Shortly after that he won in San José and Memphis, so he got seeded in Australia. He really increased his performance, especially his game from the base line. I think he worked hard on that with his trainer. And I think he served better as well. I think he can go far here if he keeps on playing like that.
Q: Is there actually a strategy against a player with such a serve? Kamke: Well, I actually had a pretty clear strategy for my service games, and I managed to go through with that with one exception. But there is also a strategy for his serves when you actually manage to get the ball, i.e. to return as much as possible so he can’t go in with his first ball. That’s really difficult. Or to attack him on his second serve. I wanted to put pressure on him during his second serve. But I didn’t expect his second serve so strong. So it was difficult.
Q: You won a match in Paris. Do you think the downwards spiral can be stopped now? Kamke: Yes, I’ve been actually working quite well for about a month, even though the results weren’t that great. But my trainer and I noticed that it was going into the right direction. I played very well in Paris in the first round, but unfortunately I got an opponent then who was too strong. Now I have also played well this week. I hope it will keep getting better.
Q: What do you want to achieve in Wimbledon? Kamke: I would like to reach the third round again. Or even get further. But that depends on the draw, if Federer or Nadal are waiting in the first round it will be pretty difficult to reach the third. But apart from the top 5 I think you can beat all the other players, you can beat them as well of course, but the chances are rather slim. But I would love to reach the second week at a Grand Slam. I will practice for that this week, and next week I will go to Eastbourne.
Q: Do you know how you want to finish this season? Kamke: Yes, I would like to finish as top 50. Even though I didn’t get the right results in the last one and a half months, I still want to reach the top 50. That’s my goal and I do everything to reach it.

Kamke s'offre Chela
